Today, in a tradition as American as the 4th of July, along with selling fireworks to raise money for scholarship programs it offers, Garberville Veterans of Foreign Wars post 6354 is asking people to sign a petition.

According to a spokesperson we talked to by phone yesterday, the petition is asking the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors to allow the group to fix the Garberville Vet’s Hall.

In an article last month in the Redwood Times,

Garberville Veterans of Foreign Wars post 6354 Quartermaster Loren Pancoast said the building was closed due to 15 years of deferred maintenance, namely a leaking roof, that veterans brought to the attention of the county but never got fixed.

“It’s a county building,” he said. “They keep insisting we have to rebuild. That we can’t fix the hall. There’s some controversy in that but that’s what their engineers say.”

The spokesperson said that the group wants to fix the Hall not rebuild it and they are asking customers at their firework stand near the clock on Redwood Drive in Garberville to sign their petition so that the Hall can be open again for meetings, classes, and dances, etc.

Yes the county should have fixed a long time ago THE vets should not have to do this They are Vets That is the a small thing to do for them We spend money on things that are a waste Do the right thing Board

When the county swindled the veterans out of the property donated by Ester Underwood they promised to maintain the building indefinitely. The Veterans at their own cost had the leaking roof repaired but a design flaw resulted in continued leakage. The Board of Supervisors have been unresponsive to the veterans concerns for many years.

The county is responsible by LAW. That this has dragged on for years is the SHAME of the county. No one more so then ESTELLE FENNEL.
Feet to the fire Estelle. Make this happen or resign before the next election.
