CHP Will Begin Independence Day Holiday ‘Maximum Enforcement Period’ on July 3rd

This is a press release from the California Highway Patrol:

By US Air Force from USA – Traffic control, Public Domain, Link

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A mid-week Independence Day holiday may result in less travel, but the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will still be working to keep the roadways safe during its Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP).

The CHP’s MEP will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 3, and conclude at midnight on Wednesday, July 4. Officers will be on the lookout for drivers who are impaired by alcohol or drugs.

“Do not let a day of festivities turn into a day of tragedy. If you drive impaired, you risk your life and the lives of others on the road,” CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley said. “Motorists will help make everyone’s holiday safer by driving sober, fastening their seat belts, and avoiding distractions.”

Impaired driving does not just mean alcohol. It is also illegal to drive while impaired by drugs, regardless if they are legal or illegal. If you are going out and plan to drink, designate a sober driver or have an alternate transportation plan.

If you are hosting an event, have plenty of non-alcoholic beverages on hand. Fourth of July gatherings often extend into the evening, as people wait for fireworks. Stop serving alcohol well before the end of your party. If any of your guests become impaired, take their keys and call them a cab or ride-share, or give them a ride home.

During the Independence Day MEP in 2017, which was four days, 47 people were killed in collisions on California roads. Within CHP jurisdiction, more than half the vehicle occupants who died were not wearing seat belts. The CHP also made 1,244 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during last year’s Independence Day MEP.

The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security.

What a joke! Are non holidays minimum enforcement? It’s just an excuse for chp to fleece millions in it for its already overpaid highway cops.

Sort of like “safety corridors”. Are the rest of the highways “unsafe corridors”?

How about ‘travel’ on Hwy. 36? (Traveling is a right. Driving is a privilege) – think cattle drive/commerce/identa-fiction card.

This article doesn’t say how the Revenue Generators plan to provide the highest level of $$$ for 24 hrs.

I think you should protest by staying home. No need to generate money for the government! That is my plan.

Stoned drivers need to be kept off the road, make sure to scrutinize people who need haircuts and call in their positions if you think they are smoking dope and driving.

Together we can make our roads safer by alerting law enforcement to the activities of dopers and druggies.

More people drive stoned than drunk, so it’s really prime time to see pot heads arrested for Dui.

Happy Holiday Everyone and remember that America is only for law abiding people, everyone that doesn’t fit that bill can leave or labor in prison.

The CHP should be operated at “Maximum” every day of the week, and 24/7/365! There are far too many speeders, dangerous drivers, persons DUI and bad truckers endangering everyone! There are also constant fatal wrecks, rig wrecks, and general craziness.

Over Memorial Day, I was stopped for a “drunk check”. Me, the sober guy who hasn’t had a drink in 30 years!

This “enforcement excersize” is a waste of resources that would be better spent in regular patrols.

Or interlock devices that simply arrest you in your car.

“You can ask me whatever you want. Am i being detained? I don’t need your permission or consent to video my public servants.”

An agent who’s standing in the middle of a public highway, wearing a public uniform, collecting a public paycheck, while seizing the public, absent reasonable suspicion, has no expectation of privacy. Once they start claiming that you’re in the public, and you have no right to privacy, that goes both ways. A security checkpoint, based on the raw numbers coming out of the corporate gov’t itself, shows that this is not increasing our security. In fact, it’s making it less secure. It’s feeding an Empire-building. It’s feeding agents and job security.

Please post a link to those stats about the lack of security. The CDC did a study that found a 20% reduction in driving injuries benefit, other non profits have found it to be effective. Lawyers love it. Those caught up it may hate it.

Where does it say they are setting up DUI checkpoints?

I don’t see that either. This is just extra cops on the road (being paid overtime).

They will have DUI blockades! Depend on it! I predict the checkpoints will be in well known “drunk zones”, like Fortuna, Eureka and Arcata…

Then why are they stopping at midnight the 4th? I would like them stay up until 3 a.m the 5the of July at all points so they can pickup those drunks that like to close it down at the drinking establishments then set off for their favorite drug house to keep the party rolling.

HWY’s round here are pretty scary! Almost got killed Friday, at the top of the hill south of Myers Flat. Defensive driving is the name of the game. Assume everyone is stoned, drunk or insane. Don’t exceed the speed limit. Keep lots of space around you. You might make it home alive. Good Luck! Have a safe 4th of July!
