Northbound traffic in front of the Broadway Cinema is being rerouted up West Cedar. Southbound traffic is still open to through traffic.
Capt. Brian Stevens of Eureka Police requested us to alert people that they should detour using Wabash or 14th Streets.
Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.
UPDATE 2:07 p.m.: According to EPD, If absolutely necessary to get through this way, there is now one northbound lane open. Otherwise, their preferred route would be up 14th or Wabash. One northbound lane is still closed

The drug addicts flagrantly jay-walk, as if they want to be hit.
on a bike? you have to give a bike 3 feet regardless if there is a bike lane. sometimes it means you don’t pass the bike and you just stay behind it.
I have no idea what the situation was with this guy, but I have had plenty of our local tweakers on bikes fly across intersection without looking or randomly dart back in and out between cars, along the street. Regardless of the three foot rule, if they can’t ride in a straight line, it doesn’t do much good.
You are right. But when it comes down to it, the bigger car has the right of way.
hmm,
What does your comment have to do with ANYTHING!?
A person was seriously injured, on a bike.
Unfortunately there is a sizable problem with Broadway. To such an extent that driving to McKinleyville seems preferable. It is hard enough to deal with traffic, people entering and exiting every which way without someone carrying a huge chip on their shoulder acting erratically.
At this point there is no information to judge but venting frustration over the density, aggressiveness and irrational behavior of so many is understandable. So what do you think will get improvement to the problem if not complaints about behavior that makes it infinitely worse? Pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers all would be helped if free discussion occurs. And if something different was determined have happened, about that too.
Unfortunately, I have not choice but to drive thru Eureka 6 days a week, no matter what way you go, it’s not safe, Ugh. People on bikes need to be careful too, hope semi driver and bike rider are both okay. Poor Eureka, what a mess it is.
You can keep you “poor Eureka” comments. Some of us are actual citizens living in nice neighborhoods trying to have a nice town. IF you don’t like it that cool, but [edit]
If one is a ‘semi struck bicyclist’ does that mean partially struck, or do you need a dash.
“a semi struck a bicyclist” seems to clarify your issue.
Bad reading skills. A semi struck A (emphasis mine) bicyclist. Seems clear to me. TKO in favor of press release.
I was going from the title, more joking than giving a toss about the language.
I have been avoiding Broadway for over a year now and try and take alternative routs , E street and walnut out to Herrick road. And If I can order on amazon and avoid the mall is my preference now.
There are so many tweeters and pedestrians stoned out of there minds down there that don’t have any regard for traffic , there seems to be almost daily accidents on Broadway now. You can daily see them on bikes flying threw intersections regardless if there is a stop sigh or light. ( the police can really do much not worth their time to give a ticket to someone that’s never going to show up anyway.) 🙁
People on bicycles have become a huge problem on Broadway, 4th & 5th Streets. They seem to think they can ride out and somehow everyone will stop for them. I hope the bicyclist is okay but I won’t be surprised if he rode in front of or into the truck.
Everyone seems so sure this was a tweaker. The drivers are nothing to brag about, either. I have been hit twice in the past 16 years, crossing legally in a crosswalk, and with the light. Drivers blow through a light or stop sign without even looking. Stop pre-judging until you know.
I want a flying bike.
Kym, you have some really calloused followers…I gotta stop reading the comments looking for further information. God help us all.
The “semi” was a fully loaded log truck
Is the man okay how did it happen any news now? Updates?
I never got time to call EPD today. I’ll try next week.
👍🏼💯
Is the man okay no ody said if he made it or didnt
My son was struck on his bicycle about 2 hours after that accident. He has on 6th st and was struck by a pickup pulling out of a business exit. My son also received major injuries and was flown to UCSF. He arrived back last night by ambulance transport.
Prayers to all involved in both accidents. There truly needs to be better, safer places for cyclists.
