Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Offers Free Bus Passes To Inmates Going Home Who’ve Been Arrested in Outlying Areas

HCSO Humboldt County Sheriff's OfficePress release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department:

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce a new transportation program for inmates released from the Humboldt County Correctional Facility. As part of this program, the Sheriff’s Office is providing inmates arrested in the outlying areas of the county the opportunity to have transportation back to the area where they were arrested. Inmates must meet the following criteria to be eligible for this program:

 The inmate must have been booked into the facility with less than 5 dollars and/or does not have means to purchase a bus ticket.

 The inmate must have been arrested outside the greater Eureka area. (This does not include Cutten, Myrtletown or Humboldt Hill.)

If the individual meets both criteria, they will be offered a public transportation bus ticket. The tickets are provided using funds from the Inmate Welfare Fund and are offered regardless of the time of release, affording released inmates the opportunity to return to their place of residence when the buses are operating.

This new transportation program affords more inmates the opportunity to return home upon release. The Sheriff’s Office’s previous policy allowed for anyone arrested over 25 miles away from the correctional facility to receive a bus ticket upon request. Under the new program, that radius is much smaller and inmates are proactively offered the opportunity, rather than having to make a request.

During the first month of this program, the Sheriff’s Office has provided over 60 bus tickets to individuals arrested outside the greater Eureka area, allowing them a safe return home. The Sheriff’s Office is always looking for ways to assist inmates and reduce barriers for successful reentry into society. The new transportation program will help released inmates have a better chance to create a healthy lifestyle upon release.

Maybe it should also depend on the charges? Idk about you, but I don’t want someone who was charged with a violent crime on my bus.

Good morning Kym. Do you have any information about the assault of the homeless man at the Bootleg in Gville?

“The Sheriff’s Office is always looking for ways to assist “inmates” ” but this appears to also be used for people arrested somewhere outside Eureka who were not confined to the jail, and are being released from custody.

The use of the word “inmate” for arrested people is incorrect both during their detention and upon their release. It is also incorrect for anyone being released from jail, at most they would be a “released inmate of ___ jail,” they do not retain inmate status upon release.

GOOGLE…
in·mate noun
a person confined to an institution such as a prison or hospital.
synonyms: prisoner, convict, captive, detainee, internee

This press release really shows the mentality of the police, once you’re arrested, you’re an inmate. I would expect better from our Sheriff’s Office – at least pretend you still think we’re valid human beings with rights and at least the appearance of belief in “innocent until proven guilty.”

So you’d prefer it stated, “Citizens leaving the courthouse”? That could include the entire population. That’s a hefty bill to cover. I bet they’d take a donation.

May be new that HCSO is openly offering this, but it’s been state law to give out bus tickets to broke inmates to get home for over 30 years if tbey ask…

You are joking, right??? HCSO obey the laws they are supposed to enforce??? A Snowball’s chance in WELL anyway!!! They’re too busy grabbing other people’s property such as the Vette, one deputy snagged on the SUPER cheap!!! That’s one example out of the myriad of claims that were brought to light earlier this year or late last year I can’t recall which offhand & I’m too lazy to search!!!

Seems criminal that they wouldnt have done that already, its no wonder eureka is so crime ridden.
A few years back they let one out in the middle of the night, he walked accross the street to the church and tortured a priest to death, cutting out body parts while he was still alive and such.
Im ashamed to say i got a dui once in my driveway at home, they pulled me in, kid sherrifs that work in the jail ruffed me up a bit and booted me at 3am 60 miles from home and $300 missing from my wallet
