[UPDATE 6:30 p.m.] Traffic Accident/ Vehicle on Fire West of Arcata

Vehicle fire

At approximately 4:30 p.m. two vehicles collided on State Route 255 near Jackson Ranch Road. One white vehicle is in a ditch and on fire according to scanner information. The first report to emergency dispatch indicates that there is at least one person screaming.

UPDATE 4:40 p.m.: The vehicle is now engulfed in flames. “All traffic needs to be diverted and all evidence needs to be in place for now,” the dispatcher told an officer over the scanner.

UPDATE 4:41 p.m.: The road is completely shut down according to traffic over the scanner.

UPDATE 4:44 p.m.: An ambulance is now at the scene.

UPDATE 4:55 p.m.: The fire is now contained, according to the Incident Commander speaking over the scanner.

UPDATE 5:17 p.m.: Jonathan Beck who was stuck in the traffic tells us that he was told by emergency personnel that the road could be closed for another 40 to 50 minutes. He took the following photo.

UPDATE 6:30 p.m.: According to a CHP spokesperson, the two vehicles crashed on State Route 255. The driver of one attempted to flee but went off the road and his vehicle caught on fire. The other driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver that fled was eventually taken into custody.

i am not sure how accurate this following info is as its like 2nd or 3rd hand. But he was supposedly traveling at a high rate of speed and rear ended another car off the road before this event happened. continued on his eay before he struck the next one.

We drove up on it shortly after the first officer arrived, before fire and rescue. The rear ending part of the story fits what we saw. Debris all over the road and vehicle in the ditch on the right. Back of it smashed up. We could see a vehicle up ahead fully in flames. Turned around at that point to take another route home.
