Six Middle School Students Helped Install New Landscaping in Rio Dell
Press release from the City of Rio Dell:
Six student leaders from the Student Council of Monument Middle School trekked to City Hall on Friday June 8, 2018 to help install landscaping along a recently reconstructed entrance to the building. The students planted thirty Erica x Darleyensis ‘Kramer’s Rote’ plants known for their pink flowers. The students will graduate on Thursday June 14 and look forward to continuing to serve their community and fellow students after a well‐deserved summer break.
The City of Rio Dell was able to use funds from the Department of Housing and Community Development (CDBG) to replace a badly aged entrance to City Hall with an ADA compliant porch and ramp. The project also included the installation of LED lighting in the parking lot that has reduced energy consumption by 90% compared to the old system. ADA, or the Americans with Disabilities Act, was signed into law in 1990 and prohibits discrimination against those with disabilities while also setting standards for access to public and other facilities. The project follows on the heels of additional ADA improvements the city has made recently including downtown ADA compliant parking that includes free electric vehicle charging for those legally using the ADA parking.
A special thanks goes to Councilmember Sue Strahan and Planning Commissioner Julie Woodall for their work on landscape beautification.
