A hydrant gushes water around 20 feet in the air after a hit and run driver struck it tonight. [Photo provided by a reader]

A little after 11 p.m., a vehicle struck a fire hydrant near the corner of I Street and Wood Street in Eureka. The vehicle fled the scene headed northbound on I Street.

One lane of I Street is closed and County City workers have arrived to shut off the water and repair the problem.
