Vets Sell Handcrafted Flowers to Raise Money for Disabled Veterans
Local Veterans from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post (VFW) 2207 are distributing Buddy Poppies at four locations in Fortuna; Ray’s Food Place, Safeway, Ace Hardware, and Grocery Outlet.
The Buddy Poppy program came in to existence around 1922 as a commemoration of those whose lives were lost during World War I. Today, it is the official flower of the VFW to commemorate Memorial Day.
It was inspired by a poem written by a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, who after seeing the Red Poppies growing in the battle scarred fields of Ypres, Belgium penned the poem “In Flanders Fields”.
The Buddy Poppy Memorial Day program is an official event sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The individual poppies are hand made by disabled veterans, and all donated proceeds go to fund programs for disabled military veterans.
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place, and in the sky, The larks, still bravely singing, fly, Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead; short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe! To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high! If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

An appropriate symbol for Memorial Day. Just got back from Europe last week, and though I wasn’t in Flanders the brilliant red poppies were in full bloom everywhere. (Shutterstock photo.)
Kym I know you don’t tolerate me but I love my dogs and a neighbor of mine just showed me a white pit bull he picked up somewhere on fruit land ridge he said, hetold me he put up on websites but I can’t find it,so I think he stole someones dog. Would you please help me find out if there is a white pit bull lost or missing. This would mean so much to me, I had my dog stolen before and got her back. If you could help me I would be very appreciative.
Tim,
I did a quick search and I don’t see any posts about a missing white pit bull. I am sorry.
Also, I’ve never even deleted one of your posts that I know of. I have held you for moderation just to make sure you don’t insult someone but…I’ve got my own temper issues so don’t take it too personally.
I know I can be an asshole but I read your site fatefully, this is why I asked you for help. I think this person in question stole this dog. I’m not smart with the internet. I took a picture of the dog and I will try and figure out how to send it to you. Thank you so very much.
Tim, send me an email and I will try to help you. [email protected]
