Arcata Needs Volunteers for 2018/2019 Plaza Improvement Task Force

This is a press release from the City of Arcata:

Arcata, CA – The City of Arcata is currently seeking community members for three volunteer positions on the newly formed 2018/2019 Plaza Improvement Task Force.

The Arcata Plaza serves as the epicenter of the community and as the economic hub for Arcata businesses. Shoppers, employees, merchants, tourists, students and families who visit Arcata all take away impressions of our community based on their experiences in the Plaza, and in recent years, the Plaza has seen an increase in aggressive interactions and calls for police service. Based on community outreach and concerns, Arcata City Council created the Plaza Improvement Task Force to help restore the Arcata Plaza as the centerpiece of the Arcata community.

Members of the Task Force will work to identify, prioritize and make recommendations to the City Council on projects and programs that would improve the downtown Plaza neighborhood. The Task Force will primarily focus on general safety, economic development, infrastructure improvements, beautification and an increase of Plaza-based community activities. Members of the task force will also collaborate with key stakeholders and residents to identify priority projects and programs to increase public use and reduce calls for police service.

Task Force meetings will begin as early as July 2018, and Task Force duties will on conclude on Friday, April 5, 2019, upon delivery of their final report unless extended by the City Council.

The Plaza Improvement Task Force will consist of nine members, with four members being appointed by Arcata City Committees including the Parks & Recreation Committee, Economic Development Committee, Transportation Safety Committee and Public Safety Committee. In addition, one member will be appointed by and serve as a representative of the Arcata Chamber of Commerce and another will be appointed by and serve as a representative of Arcata Main Street.

The City of Arcata is currently seeking applications for the three remaining at-large members of the Task Force. All interested community members are encouraged to apply, especially those who are currently involved in Plaza engagement groups.

Interviews for at-large Task Force members will be held between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, and City Council will appoint members to the Task Force at the City Council meeting immediately following the interviews.

For more information, or to apply for at-large membership on the Plaza Improvement Task Force, visit cityofarcata.org/500/Vacancies-Applications or call 707-822-5953.

  • Really? You need a task force to figure out how to make the plaza nice? Sounds like you may already have a clue, based on your own press release: “Shoppers, employees, merchants, tourists, students and families who visit Arcata all take away impressions of our community based on their experiences in the Plaza, and in recent years, the Plaza has seen an increase in aggressive interactions and calls for police service.”

Really??? This sounds like something that should be funded. Asking a lot of someone to accomplish all the required tasks, and all they get is a handshake.

Just fence it off and the problem is solved.

    Walls work and work well.

Build a wall around The Plaza and make HSU pay for it.

  • I suggest removing the statue and replace it with one of Chairman Mao. Then park a tank in the middle of the plaza and dare an alt-right student to stand in front of it.

Better yet, put up a bright orange 🍊statue of Traitor Trump 🇷🇺 and charge money 💵 to throw produce at it. Charge 1 dollar per “treason tomato” 🍅.

  • Shutdown the dive bars, or at least make them open at 5pm or later.
