Every week the Southern Humboldt Chamber of Commerce features a business of the week. We’ll be sharing their posts here to celebrate our community.

“This week’s featured business of the week is Art of the Burl Redwood Gallery!

Art of the Burl Redwood Gallery is an art gallery and gift shop in Miranda featuring functional burl wood products made on site, as well as local arts and crafts!burl art

This Humboldt County Community Art Collective is locally owned and operated by Sarah Starck and Jay Boyce. In November 2013 they held their grand opening and are now going into their 5th successful season!

This fun, unique and creative art collective features functional burl wood products, such as tables, large art bowls, lidded vessels, mini oil lamps, boxes, vases, lamps, and more! They also make metal art with copper, brass, and nickel, including customs signs. They offer fiber art, jewelry, ceramics, glass, repurposed home decor, fine art, photography, wildlife photos by County Line Wild, youth art, tie dyes, t-shirts, sweatshirts, baby items, wedding gifts, cards and postcards!baskets

Art of the Burl Redwood Gallery features over 50 local artists, has regular workshops including basket making, felting and paint & sip events, as well as holding classes with special guest teachers for broom making, oil painting and more.

What sets this business apart from the rest is their true support for keeping it local!

Sarah states, “We support and feature local artists, crafters, specialty food makers, photographers, youth artists, potters, glass blowers, fiber artists, jewelry makers, wood workers, musicians, herbalists, authors, up-cycle artists, and more. When you shop at Art of the Burl, the money stays right here in the commUNITY.”

A few things you might not know about this crafty business, is some of the art featured is from our very own wildlife photographer, Talia Rose!photos of wildlife Youth artist Serenity Wood’s magical mermaid art is also featured in the gallery. The location of the gallery is perfect for workshops for events that have to do with weddings, blessings, parties, “ladies nights”, school groups, youth groups or whatever you like!

Come in and explore the arts and crafts of our local community!

Art of the Burl Redwood Gallery is located at 6609 Avenue of the Giants on the south side of Miranda, perched up on a hill surrounded by magnificent redwood trees!

I’d actually like to see the company pledge to track and trace the source of all the burl through their store to be sure it isn’t being poached off the state and national park land like it so commonly is in Orick.

Wow. This is a very legitimate business. You really need to relax. In fact, you should have BEEN THERE today to check it out along with all the other wonderfull stuff at the first Miranda Street Fair.

Legit businesses inadvertently support illegal wood harvest when they don’t insist on certified wood or in the case of burl, specific track and trace data. Gibson guitars got into trouble with this and they are about as legit as they come.

It is far too easy for companies to overlook sourcing irregularities simply because it’s inconvenient.
