[UPDATE 3:04 p.m.] 67-Year-Old Was Victim of Stabbing Near Rio Dell

Assault FeatureThe Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has released more information on this morning’s stabbing near Rio Dell. According to Samantha Karges of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, “We received a call for the report of a stabbing that occurred in the middle of the Eagle Prairie Bridge between 10:30 and 11 a.m. Karges said that a 67-year-old male Rio Dell resident was going for a walk and as he returned over the bridge, he encountered a man riding a bicycle.

“He told the man ‘you can’t ride your bike on the bridge,” Karges explained. “The male became hostile towards him. As the victim tried to keep walking, the male subject assaulted him with the bike and struck him in the head.”

The victim and the suspect became involved in a physical altercation, Karges said. “The suspect stabbed the victim…The weapon is unknown.”

Karges said, “The victim was able to get away. He was transported to Redwood Memorial Hospital.”

The man had a stab wound in his left abdomen, according to Karges. He was conscious and talking and able to walk when medical arrived on scene.

“The male suspect is Caucasian,” Karges said. “He is 5’8″ with a thin build and wearing a beanie.” She said that the suspect was last seen riding towards Scotia on a dark colored, newer model mountain bike.

“We are asking residents of Scotia to be on the lookout for him,” Karges explained.

Scotia School was not put on lockdown as a result of this incident.

Earlier Chapter: Elderly Male Reported Stabbed in the Abdomen

UPDATE 3:04 p.m.: Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a stabbing that took place on a bridge this morning.

On May 16, 2018, between 10:30 and 11 a.m., a 67-year-old male resident of Rio Dell was going for a walk on the Eagle Prairie Bridge, which connects the City of Rio Dell and the Town of Scotia. While halfway across the bridge, the victim observed a male suspect riding a bicycle nearby. The victim stopped to tell the man that all bicycle riders must walk their bike when crossing the bridge. The suspect became hostile with the victim. As the victim turned away to continue his walk, the suspect assaulted him with the bicycle and then struck him in the head.

The two men got into a physical altercation, at which point, the suspect then stabbed the victim in the left abdomen with an unknown object. The victim was able to leave the scene and call for help. He was transported to a local hospital. The victim’s condition is unknown at this time, but he is expected to survive this incident.

Rio Dell and Scotia residents are asked to keep a look out for the suspect, described as a Caucasian male adult in his 20’s, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, thin build, wearing a beanie. The suspect was last seen riding a dark colored, newer model mountain bike towards the Town of Scotia.

Anyone who sees this suspect should not confront him, but call 9-1-1 immediately. Anyone with information about this case or related criminal activity is encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Office at (707) 445-7251 or the Sheriff’s Office Crime Tip line at (707) 268-2539.

Goes to show you,This drug warps the brain and Prop 36 puts them right back on the street. The DA is elected and it would be nice if there were clear protocol from that office;re:defense of property or persons.Think about it?

Normally I would agree that people should mind their own business. But in this instance, minding our own business is why our community has gotten over run with Tweakers and vagrants. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard people say, “it didn’t used to be like this around here” that’s because 20-30 years ago the demonized “good old boys” didn’t put up with this shit!

I believe in minding my own business until somehow your business does become my business. That said, our communities could use a little more “good ol’ boy” behavior enforcement. So called “rednecks” enforced what the police could not do. Sometimes people need to put in check and on notice. Funny thing is that I now think of good ol’ boys as the Emerald OG (original grower), the rule was mind your scene, fly below the radar and be cool…man!

kindly mind YOUR own business — those less inclined to accept this rampant and highly unacceptable behavior will act accordingly. A 67 yr old being assaulted by a punk local who may well have a meth whore for a mother ( ahhh, there’s the rub) cannot be accepted or tolerated —

Isn’t the bridge closed to all traffic? It is shrouded for paint removal at the south end. How come either of these guys were on the bridge?
And folks, if you AREN’T a cop, don’t tell random strangers what is/is not lawful. It can get you stabbed😨

Is that victim blaming a 67 year old man for pointing out a law for public safety concerns? Awesome.

The issue with so many posters is who is a protected victim and anyone saying a bad word is to be immediately expunged from the human race and who is not protected so it’s open season to drop as much vitriol on them as is wanted. Obviously old guys are low on the protected list with some. Unless…

Every citizen has the right and even the duty to remind other citizens of the law when the law is being ignored and if there is a threat to safety. I have had many GMOB’s cuss at me and worse when I told them to ride in the street and not on the sidewalk. They love to cruise through stop signs as well. The bicycle riders of Humboldt are as homicidal as the drivers.

Yes, every citizen has the right, but that doesn’t mean they should exercise it without thinking. Your civic duty should not outweigh your life, especially when it’s about riding a bicycle on a bridge.

Open your eyes. Society is increasingly becoming “prison rules”, with instant consequences for perceived slights, without regard for societal norms. All the blog commenting, hand-wringing, and complaining won’t make it less so.

So many people don’t know how close they are to a beat-down, stabbing, or worse, when they flip someone off, cut them off in traffic, call them names, or even just remind them that they are breaking the law. It’s not right, but it is a reality people ignore at their own risk. The police can’t protect you from conflicts you create, over nothing, in everyday life.

Survivors know you have to pick your battles, and most importantly you have to prepare for the worst possible response. This victim should not have been attacked, and I sincerely hope he recovers. I also hope the scumbag who stabbed him is caught and jailed.
None of that changes my opinion that the victim should have been prepared for, and even expected an assault for his reminder of the law to a GMOB.

“Don’t let your mouth write checks your body can’t cash”. Remember that gem?

Social justice warriors are going to get a reality check eventually. It’s the new normal.

And where is the limit of avoidance? Never talk to a stranger? Never met anyone’s eyes? Always give money when someone demands it? Only drive certain streets? How about never leaving your house? Shoot first when scared? Never help a child, woman or old man because you may be next? Allow my neighbor to use my property because he’s a loud mouth jerk? Where does it end? When society reaches the level of the Lord of the Flies?

I will not give that kind of power to others to control my life. That does not mean I have no manners or civilty. Though the older I get, the less years I have to lose. I fought the battle of my fears as a teen and am not going back. You picture a grumpy old man asking for a problem. I picture a man riding a bike in too narrow a place and having already been a danger. We’ll have wait for facts to know.

I think you missed my point, or I didn’t state it effectively.
I’m not promoting scared hermits, I’m saying evaluate and be prepared.
Don’t just spout off, believing the rules of polite society will protect you.
The losers that commit these crimes don’t know polite society.

This is why we have a Second Amendment. Beats waiting for law enforcement to come out and mop up the blood, followed by the judiciary “Catching & Releasing”.

Agreed. Hopefully this is one 67-year-old who’s about to go purchase a handgun.

Not unless he also goes to training and is granted a concealed weapon permit, because now in California even open carry is illegal. Heck you’re not even allowed to transport a firearm unless it’s unloaded and locked in a safe or dismantled.

Yet if your a criminal that commits a crime with a gun don’t worry, Governor Moonbeams got your back. He just passed a lot of legislation to lift the minimum sentences for crimes committed with firearms and to reduce sentences for criminals in possession of firearms lol…

THC,

” . . .now in CA INC even open carry is illegal.” Here we are again with ‘illegal’ and ‘legal’ – the COLOR of law.

The second amendment is my permit, thank you very much.

So takeaway…don’t bother getting a CCW because first of all, if it’s concealed…no problem unless you use it. As you stated, “Yet if your a criminal that commits a crime with a gun don’t worry, Governor Moonbeams got your back. He just passed a lot of legislation to lift the minimum sentences for crimes committed with firearms and to reduce sentences for criminals in possession of firearms lol…”

For those of you who never had a CCW, part of the qualifications for receiving one is the full acknowledgment and understanding all of the laws that surround having, carrying or discharging a firearm. If you cannot prove that you were in fear for your life or that of someone else, you will be charged with any number of charges if you pull the trigger.

Normally I wouldn’t endorse a product by name on a public forum, but as a concerned senior I’ll take the liberty. BEARS AWAY is the product you should carry on your stroll my silver backed friends. Formulated to stop a Grizzly, it works wonders fending off punks, drug addicts, and bridge trolls. Effective at 25 feet so you don’t even have to deal with their stench. Although illegal in the bed-wetter states, it’s much easier than a firearm when dealing with bureaucrats wallowing in their swamp of mismanaged empathy.

I wonder why the purp got away easily? Maybe if one lane was open They couldve perused the criminal instead they had to go all the way arround. But hey it doesnt take that long right? Total hazard and easy getaway.

Sounds like he got away with assault , so maybe next time he will think he can get away with murder, doesn’t seem like there is much of a deterrent or follow up.

This bridge has been closed for too long. People are getting frustrated and angry. Maybe they could at least hang a flag over the tarps, and open the bridge for Memorial Day.
