One Acre Fire Burning on the South Jetty

vegetation fire iconAn approximately one acre fire is currently burning on the South Jetty, according to Cal Fire Battalion Chief Laura Coleman. She said the fire was reported by a Fish and Wildlife employee around 11 a.m. It was spreading slowly.

“We did have equipment, crews and aircraft on it pretty quickly,” she said. Cal Fire has Copter 102 and two handcrews and engines at the scene, she told us. Loleta Volunteer Fire Department and Fish and Wildlife are also at the scene.

“The fire is burning in the dune grass,” Coleman said. Dune grass can be difficult to totally put out as it will smolder for a time, she explained. However, firefighters are making good progress.
