Fortuna Middle School Class Gets First Place and $1000 in National Competition
Congratulations to Rachel Galliani’s 8th grade students from Toddy Thomas Middle School who won FIRST PLACE in this year’s Garrett Morgan Symposium!
The Garrett Morgan Symposium is a national competition aimed at challenging children to come up with innovative transportation improvements. First place includes $1,000 to the class, and certificates for all the participants.
The class is working on an idea to reduce the carbon footprint of their school by installing piezoelectric floor tiles in high-traffic areas around campus to harness human-generated power for an electric school bus. They presented their idea via live stream on April 12 at the Caltrans District Office in Eureka.

Awesome! Way to go kids!
Next up, supercharging toilets to power the California Teachers Association!
I hope I am mistaken because surely no one is mocking children who are winning an award for being innovative. I must be misunderstanding you.
With you Kym🥇
Classic.
Yes, let there be no progress. After all, it’s the first two syllables of the word “progressive!”
Johnny Reb… perfect monicker for your comment.
How progressive of this teacher!
One proud momma right here! Way to go M and crew. Congrats Ms G!
What amazing kids!!
Keep up the great work, kids!
We’re all counting on you.
No, really.
No, REALLY.
Johnny Reb is living in a different century and rational thought might be an issue for him. This teacher and these kids should be proud of their achievement and it lets the kids know that they can compete with their peers nationwide. And that is important to know.
