Miguel Angel Meza: ‘He truly loved his Humboldt County life’

This section includes both obituaries and memories. Honoring our loved ones who have died does not end immediately after their passing. We recognize that… so we’re extending our obituary section to include individuals who may have left a long time ago. If you want to remember someone who is gone, either recently or longer ago, please send a photo and a few sentences to [email protected]

Sun Shine

The bright sun warms the winter breeze

by the cabin on the lake, sitting, watching

the birds singing wildly, the fishes jumping, splashing

in the crisp cold water. There I sit fishing, soaking up

the sun, happy to be alive.

— Miguel Meza

Miguel Angel Meza, age 20, passed away Friday, March 30, 2018 at his family home in Eureka, Calif. from complications of epilepsy.

Miguel was born on Dec. 22, 1997 at Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna, to a large and loving family who will miss him deeply. His presence brought joy to everyone who knew him. He was happy and full of life, a free spirit with not a care in the world, who loved life more than anything. You could see how beautiful he was right through his big brown eyes and sense it in his gentle hugs.

Miguel worked as a handyman. He truly loved his Humboldt County life, the outdoors, camping, and going four-wheeling with his brothers. He loved working on his motorized projects, and any opportunity that came up to make a new go-cart or quad, he would make it.

Miguel loved his family, children, and the elderly, and was known for his playful humor, his positive outlook, and his generosity of spirit. He always put others’ needs and wants before his own and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. His loss will be felt by many.

Miguel is survived by his loving parents Jose and Teodolinda Meza; his brothers Jose (and wife Keri) Meza, Damian Meza, Fermin Meza, and Sam Meza; his sister Anjelica Meza; his girlfriend Alexis Mae Mills; his nephews Antonio, Nicolas, Ryker, and Finnegan; his niece Aliyana; his grandparents Ramon and Maria Torres; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Waiting for Miguelito in heaven are his grandfathers Fermin Jimenez and Jose Meza.

A viewing will be held Thursday, April 5 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Sanders Funeral Home at 1835 E Street in Eureka. The funeral service will be held Friday, April 6 at 9:30 AM at Sacred Heart Church at 2065 Myrtle Avenue in Eureka, and burial will follow at Ocean View Cemetery at 3975 Broadway in Eureka. A reception will be held following the burial, at the Parish Hall at Sacred Heart Church. All are welcome.

Donations and condolences may be offered at htttps://www.gofundme.com/ykwqm-our-angel Thank you for your support on this unexpected tragedy.

Miguel’s loved ones will honor his memory by carrying on his legacy of kindness and generosity to others. The Meza family also urges others to be aware of the risks of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).

I agree. Very nice write up. Just goes to show that there is very little correlation between the kind of person you are and life expectancy so try and appreciate and enjoy all the little moments in life because you never know when this brief ride we are on will pull into the station.
