The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Posse and the California Highway Patrol are searching this evening for a missing mushroom hunter in the Lord Ellis Summit area.

According to Sgt. Greg Musson of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, “The young man went mushroom picking. He was supposed to meet his partner at Lord Ellis Summit turnout or at the Simpson Gun Range.” Musson noted that the gun range now belongs to Green Diamond.

Musson said the man has been missing overnight. He doesn’t have a cell phone or overnight equipment but he is an outdoorsman. At this point, Musson doesn’t have a description of the missing man but the posse does.

UPDATE Saturday: According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deparment, “On 3/31/18 at approximately 2:00 am, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was notified that missing person Justin Tripp was located in a cabin on Lord Ellis Summit with no reported injuries.”

Not an expert, but I think morels are likely in May most years. At least in Ohio they are. Boletes are common around conifers with the first rains, a bit late now. If the missing man does not have a “cell phone or overnight equipment” then he’s not much of an outdoorsman. I do hope for the best and I have learned some hard lessons myself. We’ll see if he even had a miniature flashlight or fire-making tools like matches or a lighter. Space blanket in his daypack? Water? These mountains are not to be trifled with. Walking around at night with no light is a good way to break your leg or neck. Hoping for the best.

I’ve picked some morels this year. With the large variance in elevation you just need to know at which strata they are growing.

I’ve got a lot of trumpets. Hate to think of selling them because they weigh nothing.
Thanks for the cooking tip.

Now if the sheriff depart had Apache all weather attack helicopters standing by an armored bulldozer could be sent to recover this man after he was spotted on thermal imaging.

The bull dozer could multi task and clear out some marijuana grows on the way to pick him up and on the return trip.

Just another example of our sheriff dept. needing better gear to help people and protect the community from marijuana and hippy types going poo in the woods.

About 15 years ago Canadian troops in Afghanistan were foiled by the taliban when they hid in a large field of marijuana. they covered their vehicles in weed, the cool foliage prevented the thermal image cameras from finding them. The Canadians tried to burn it with flame throwers, and incendiary bombs, but no haps. Mike Etter used to say “you can’t burn a watermelon!”

DEE da dee dee dee. A simple flashlight or campfire works just as well for signaling rescuers at night. I hope our guy is found soon in good shape.

You know, Kym, that’s it. Some pathetic troll making fun of tragedies, or possible tragedies, like the woman whose family was looking for her, is a complete turnoff. The sheer ignorance . . . I know half a dozen people that have backed off viewing your site because of this commentary. Common sense interaction is one thing, but this troll has effectively taken over you site and won. I’m done. Good for it. He got what he wanted.

Unless he’s hurt… he’s gonna stumble onto a Green Diamond logging road.

KIEM news reported he was found then added that anyone with information on criminal activity should call the sheriff’s office. Weirdly uninformative way to say there is more to the story. Sort of.

This Just in: Glad to hear our intrepid mycologist is OK. Looks like he was on the “Outdoorsman 1A, Accelerated Curriculum” for a few days. A hand-held GPS, flashlight, and other survival tools are great gift ideas for Justin. Before the big morel flush on burned over land if possible. Just in case.

In a cabin on a mountain pass. Was it his cabin? Did he find some Psilocybe Cubensis somewhere?

Inquiring minds need to know…
