Shasta-Trinity National Forest to Submit Off-Highway Vehicle Grant Proposals

REDDING, Calif. — The Shasta-Trinity National Forest is planning to request grant funds from the State of California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division (OHMVR) to enhance and manage motorized recreation on National Forest System (NFS) Lands. Three projects are being submitted:

1.    The Mt. Shasta Avalanche Education Program will deliver classroom and field-based snowmobile avalanche education classes. This project provides education patrols and field presence in local snowmobile riding areas, as well as continues to develop the volunteer snowmobile ambassador program which helps to foster positive relationships between snowmobilers and non-motorized users. Maintenance of safety signage at winter trailheads and daily avalanche weather forecasts are also part of this project.

2.    A Shasta-Trinity National Forest maintenance, operations and repairs project will hire seasonal staff to perform maintenance activities on OHV (off-highway vehicle) and OSV (over-snow vehicle) routes including: removal of fallen trees, tread maintenance, cleaning of water bars, etc. The Forest will also install OHV and OSV route markers and directional signs, service OHV and OSV restrooms, campgrounds, trailheads, and remove trash. OHV and OSV maps will also be updated and printed.

3.    Shasta-Trinity National Forest Law Enforcement’s project proposal will include public information, education and enforcement, as well as resource monitoring and protection. The plan supports enforcement of all laws pertaining to OHV operation; emphasizing noise levels, resource protection and prevention of OHV trespass. OHV-related Law Enforcement activities stress public contact, face-to-face information and education, violation prevention and signing. The grant proposal will provide patrol coverage and supplies for supporting public safety, wildlife, soils and habitat protection while sustaining OHV recreation opportunities.

Preliminary grant applications will be submitted to the OHMVR Division on March 5, 2018. The public will be able to comment on the preliminary applications from March 6 to April 2 by logging onto this California State website: http://olga.ohv.parks.ca.gov/egrams_ohmvr/user/ReviewProjects.aspx and searching for “Shasta-Trinity” under the “Agency” tab.
