Lockdown at Leggett School After Hearing Gunshots From Neighbor Target Practicing
At approximately 10:20 a.m., Leggett School children at recess were brought inside for lockdown after gunshots were heard. The shots were later determined to come from some distance away.
According to Stephanie Forman at Leggett Elementary School, “We only locked down for a short time. “[Someone] heard gunshots kind of far away. [The school] went into lockdown. We found out it was a neighbor target practicing. When he found out [the school went into lockdown], he called and apologized.”
Lt. Shannon Barney of the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department explained that the school lockdown “triggered a response from deputies and the CHP…”
Law enforcement responded to the home of the neighbor. Leggett resident Pamela Robinson said the man belonged to an “upstanding family.” She added, “He’s a really good kid.”
Barney told us at approximately 12:30 p.m., the Sheriff’s department “cleared the call. They didn’t take anyone to jail.”
Note: This is the second Mendocino school incident prompted by fears about a shooting. See the Mendocino Voice’s post here: https://www.mendovoice.com/2018/02/willits-high-threat/

Kym Kemp, can you also include the fact that the target practice took place over a mile from the school? I don’t want people to get the wrong idea.
I can’t confirm that it was a mile away but everyone I spoke to agreed that it wasn’t close so I added a sentence to the end of the first paragraph to clarify this.
If you are shootin’ off your guns and the gunfire can be heard at a public school, you might be an idiot. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Git yer guns the hell out of town where the noise won’t disturb the peaceful folk or skittish children.
They are were a good and safe distance from the school. When the air is just exactly “right” (or perhaps wrong in this instance), the sound can travel in the most profound way. Had it not been for the recent Florida incident, I doubt there would have been much notice, if any.
Kym, it’s my understanding that California law bans the discharge of a gun within 1/4 mile of a residence or public building. It would be great information for neighbors to have.
“[U]nder California law, it is unlawful to hunt, or to discharge while hunting, any firearm within 150 yards of any occupied dwelling house, residence, or other building, except for the owner or person in possession of the premises, or with the express permission of the owner or person in possession of the premises.” http://lawcenter.giffords.org/other-location-restrictions-in-california/
That stops no one in my rebel neighborhood. Guns whenever . Low life .
California has a civil code specified distance regarding schools. It also says you can not fire at a dwelling but not about the distance away you have to be. Fish and Game has a regulation about hunting within 150 yards of a dwelling but that does not apply to target shooting or shooting unregulated species.
It seems as if each country independently regulates non hunting shooting in unincorporated areas. So you need to check with the county sheriff’s office to see about non hunting shooting. I’m not sure this is right because it’s darn hard to get info on country regulations on line.
You need to know the law before you can say people are not obeying the law.
Know the family and the area, he was more like 2 miles away and well within the laws and his rights, jeez thought this was America?
I’m a Leggett resident. I know this residents and young man very well he’s a great kid and just enjoys target shooting the residents is about a mile away from the school but the sound Echoes down the canyon so sometimes it can be heard from town people are just on edge from all of their recent tragic school shootings you can never be too safe and great response by Local law enforcement agencies and making sure everything was okay
Given the times we live in no one should be shooting a gun close enough to a school that the shots can be heard in the schoolyard (even echoed). The school HAS to respond as if it was a real threat. It is just wrong that the students and teachers of the Leggett school spent a half hour lying on the floor with the lights out in complete silence.
Do you realize how far sound can travel? I think that makes your statement a little ridiculous. If people were half as worried about what they put in their bodies as they were about gunshots they might actually end up being healthier and living longer. Glad to see the fear mongering media is doing a number on you people and your paranoia.
Your obviously uneducated about firearms and the law . You don’t just crowdthink what should be then all the sudden it’s law because it feels good . You can not outlaw the sound of a weapon nor it’s discharge in unincorporated areas . 1000 feet from city limits and your good to shoot all you want .
Too simplified a statement as there are hunting regulations and most public land entites regulate shooting. And counties can regulate shooting in unincorporated areas and some do. Humboldt Co does not as far as I know.
Wow unfucking real. Welcome to 2018 cupcakes.
Alice in wonderland.
I understand what people are saying but I agree with Alice! Think of what those kids must have felt! They must have been so scared. If its during school hours and it can cause a lock down why not just do it after school hours? That’s my question if people are saying it’s legal.
Maybe the teachers and the school staff should have used some critical thinking, instead of sending everybody into a panic over what was obviously gunfire from miles away.
What do banks do when they continuously get robbed? do they put a sign on the door that says this is a robbery free zone, or do they Institute some kind of security measure to prevent the bank from being robbed again?
It’s not always so clear just how far away gun fire is. I once heard shooting that I thought was far away until the tree branch next to me exploded.
If the school officials weren’t sure, they were right to err on the side of caution.
People are way to paranoid these days. When I was young you could hear gun shots from people target practicing in the hills or river bar,it alarmed no one as guns are very legal to shoot and posses.less people over the years shot as often leading people to hear less shots, eventually very few. Now if anyone hears one they freak out.It shouldn’t alarm anyone in this area to hear someone shooting up on their own land,it’s their right and doesn’t require a sheriff being sent.
I always pause to listen to the nature of the firing as it is always possible that it represents something other than a normal situation. I have chased idiot hunters out of the animal pasture, who always start arguing with the same stupid phrase “I was only…”
I was told firsthand that the expected time for a sheriff deputy to get to the school was 45 minutes… Think about that, 45 minutes. We have a bigger problem here than a responsible legal gun owner practicing at his rural home on his day off from his full time job. The man target practicing responsibly called the school as soon as he heard what was transpiring across the canyon from his home. This community needs to ask itself if it hasn’t already, what are you doing to protect yourself because the fact is as we’ve experienced with fires and other emergency situations we are on our own for an undetermined time. Consider this a wake up call, and be thankful that we have a few responsibly licensed and trained gun owners in this area who will be there in a heartbeat to help our community as we wait for law enforcement when dealing a threat be it human or natural. I am so thankful yesterday was a false alarm, my child was shaken by the event, but what really sticks with me is what could happen if it weren’t a false alarm, who is going to come to the aid of our children when every second matters.
That’s exactly the problem with gun free zones. Do you really think someone set on killing people are just going to change their mind because of a sign. We need to get a handle on the drug problem in this country, ssri side effects includ
Some people, especially children and young adults, may be more likely to have suicidal thoughts when they take SSRIs. Studies show that when compared to results from taking a placebo, chances of having suicidal thoughts doubled — from between 1% and 2% to between 2% and 4% — when taking any kind of antidepressant, including an SSRI. If you have thoughts of hurting yourself while taking an SSRI, call 911.

They’re also needs to be mandatory training for anyone who owns a firearm and the federal government needs to get their shit together regarding background checks and cross alphabet agency Communications.
Really, THC, that sounds like a typical Monday morning to me, but thanks for that super long list that covered every bodily function known to man
I see two local commenters above; “local” and Josh, both say they know the dude well but they’re about a mile apart on where he lives. We can’t even get a straight fkn answer or agree on a damn location… not that it matters. Whatever
You’re right, were not stating the exact F-ing!!! distance but it is over a mile in a steep echo-ey river canyon and the shots were further muffled by a dense redwood grove called the “ropes course” need anymore trivial details? Be happy to help!
Those shots had to of sounded very distant, seems like very poor judgement by school staff!
