Body Discovered Near Mattole Beach

Death investigation, coroner, sheriff HumboldtYesterday at approximately 4:00 p.m., a hiker near the ocean discovered a body in the area of Mattole Beach which is near the mouth of the Mattole River not far from Petrolia. The body was recovered and brought to the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office.

According to Samantha Karges, spokesperson for the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, “It appears the body had been in the ocean for some time.”

At this point, Karges said they couldn’t say for sure what the sex of the victim was. “We’re still working on identifying the body,” she explained. “We have an autopsy scheduled for tomorrow.”

There are two people, Hana Hammer and Bryan Moore Oberg, missing in the approximate area and, of course, the body may belong to neither of them.

Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies recovered a body near Petrolia Wednesday afternoon.

On Feb. 21, 2018, at about 4:00 p.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a hiker who located the body in the Mattole Beach area.

The Petrolia Volunteer Fire Department and the Bureau of Land Management assisted in recovering the body.

The body is believed to have been deceased for some time and has not yet been identified.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, February 23.
