U.S. Forest Service Looking for Volunteer Campground Hosts for McCloud Ranger District

This is a press release from the U.S. Forest Service:

REDDING, Calif. — The McCloud Ranger District of the Shasta-McCloud Management Unit is looking for highly motivated individuals or couples to work as volunteer campground hosts starting mid-April and lasting until mid-November at Cattle Camp and Fowler’s Campgrounds. Host positions offer a great opportunity to get out into the woods for the season and can be a very rewarding experience.

About the Position(s):

Being a campground host requires one to have a friendly and helpful disposition, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of the district and share it with visitors. Hosts are required to work a minimum of 24 hours per week but may be asked to do a bit more, therefore flexibility is a must. Coverage on weekends and holidays is mandatory unless previously arranged with Recreation Staff.

Hosts will be required to answer visitors’ questions and/or direct them to the district office. Occasional occupancy updates will need to be given by the host to the district office. Some of the main duties of the position are checking payment stubs for compliance, removing old stubs, helping campers identify and rectify minor violations such as noise, unruly pets, etc. Hosts are required to identify serious violations and report them to the district or to law enforcement, depending on severity. Other host duties include the clean-up of sites, pine needle and cone removal, to picking-up some occasional litter. District recreation staff perform the garbage pick-up and restroom services, but hosts may be asked to assist or do minor maintenance.

Campground hosts must have their own RV and possess a valid state identification. Propane refills and a reimbursement stipend may be available. There are no electric hookups or dump stations at the campgrounds, though a dump station can be found in McCloud.

About the Campgrounds:

Cattle Camp and Fowler’s Campgrounds are two of the most popular camping sites on the unit, drawing visitors from all over the world. To get to the campgrounds you need to travel along Highway 89. The turnoff for Fowler’s is five miles east of the small town of McCloud (a full-service community), and Cattle Camp is 10.5 miles east. The campgrounds each have around 30 sites and offer vault toilets, water, and garbage collection. While Fowler’s is the most popular, Cattle Camp is larger, with more space between camping sites, and allows for bigger RVs.

For more information about the campgrounds, please visit: www.fs.usda.gov/stnf and follow the links to recreation, camping and select the site you are interested in. If you have any questions or you are interested in applying for the position(s), please contact Assistant Recreation Officer Marcus Nova at (530) 926-9606 or by e-mail: [email protected]. You may also submit an application through www.volunteer.gov using the search criteria below:

MULTI MILLION DOLLAR BRANCH OF GOVT, AND THEY ARE WANTING FREE HELP, IF I HAVE THIS RIGHT? WHAT HAPPENED TO 8 BUCKS AN HOUR? A SLAVE WAGE! GOOD THING THEY CANT TAX YOU ON YOUR PAY CHECK, SINCE YOU AINT GETTIN ONE. AS I READ THIS IT SAID VOLUNTEER, THAT SOUNDS LIKE NO COMPENSENTATION FOR 24 HR,S OF WORK.

RESEARCH THE ABSENCE OF COMPENSATION IS DIFFICULT. I DON’T THINK A SPOT IN THE PARKING LOT IS WORTH MUCH, OR RIDING AROUND IN THE FEDERAL TRUCK IS EITHER. AT THE END OF THE SEASON YOU HAVE LESS THAN WHEN YOU STARTED, PLUS NO HOST TITLE EITHER, WHERE I WENT TO SCHOOL THIS IS KNOWN AS A NON PRODUCTIVE VENTURE. A PITANCE SUM OF SOME TYPE SHOULD GO ALONG WITH SUCH A TITLE. OR A PROMISE OF EMPLOYMENT, AT LEAST. I BELIEVE IN CHARITY, BUT ALSO, ONE HAND WASHES THE OTHER AN BOTH HANDS WASH THE NECK.

Forest Service has no budget. It gets reduced every year and fire session eats it all. Over a billion dollars in infrastructure work the forest service has a backlog of. Do some research the forest service is getting cut to nothing more than woodland firefighters and law enforcement.

too many unfunded federal pensions is the problem. Imagine if you had a business and then you have to pay the salary of your employees who retire at 42 and then live another 50 years. You get to pay the medical insurance for them as well. True the money comes from a different fund but in the end it limits their overall budget. The forest service people are also luddites. They are really behind the times with the latest technology. Overall a really pathetic group of people. Why would you want to volunteer for these dipshits ?

With the State Park Service, you got to camp free at a site with water and electrical hook up in exchange for camp host services. But it’s right that you better have an outgoing and friendly disposition because you might get a knock on the door any time, even with the sign saying off duty, and I had one lady yelling at me because one of her friends couldn’t walk the trails without long rests and somehow that was my fault.

But on the whole it was an inexpensive and fun way to meet lots of interesting people in a peaceful setting.
