Federal Government Shutdown! Rep. Jared Huffman ‘Disgusted and Dismayed’

Press release from Representative Jared Huffman:

Jared HuffmanCongressman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) issued the following statement after the United States Congress failed to pass a bill to fund the government, resulting in a shutdown of the federal government:

“Today, I am disgusted and dismayed that Republican congressional ‘leaders’ and President Trump have brought us to a government shutdown — the very outcome President Trump said he wanted a few months ago.  In our country’s long history, this has never happened when one party controlled both branches of Congress and the Presidency.  But we’ve never before seen the toxic combination of a dysfunctional, incompetent majority in Congress, and a President that is completely uninformed, unprincipled, and uninterested in the hard work of governing.

“President Trump is wrong in claiming we need a ‘good shutdown.’ There is no such thing.  While the impacts of this lapse in funding are hard to quantify at this point, they will certainly not be ‘good.’  Not only will it directly impact federal employees, it will harm millions of people who depend on government services, families who want to visit National Parks, small business owners seeking SBA assistance, homebuyers applying for FHA or VA loans, food producers working with the FDA, and more.

“When Republicans shutdown government in 2013 as part of their obsession with repealing the Affordable Care Act, it cost our economy billions of dollars.  Now they are stubbornly taking us down the same path because of their hardline anti-immigrant agenda and their unwillingness to work with Democrats on a compromise.

“Despite controlling every branch of government, Republicans have been unable to do the most basic part of their job:  pass legislation that funds the government.  We have already had three short-term “continuing resolutions” in this fiscal year, and now they are seeking a fourth CR.  This chaos and uncertainty is hurting our country — undermining our national security, frustrating those who are trying to build infrastructure projects, and leaving states and local health clinics in limbo as to how they are going to provide healthcare to millions of vulnerable children, among other things.

“Enough is enough.  Governing by chaos, crisis, insults and hyperpartisan posturing doesn’t work.  And no country ever became great by operating under endless short-term government funding deals.

“There is a bipartisan path forward here.  A majority of both houses in Congress would support a compromise that funds defense and non-defense programs for the rest of the year, protects the Dreamers while enhancing border security, funds children’s health insurance and community clinics, provides critical disaster relief for communities reeling from the recent wildfires and hurricanes, and helps fight the opioid epidemic.  Let’s bring this bipartisan solution to the floor and vote, instead of continuing the reckless partisanship that has brought us another shameful government shutdown.

“I won’t be flying off to Mar-a-Lago for a swanky black tie fundraiser tonight, or jetting off to Davos while our government shuts down.  I’m going to stay ready to work, and I call on Republican leaders in Congress to stay in Washington, start working with Democrats, and do their jobs.”

  • Pass the popcorn…

    • Its obvious that its the democrat’s fault for looking out for illegal immigrants and not US Citizens. Jared Huffman is a sell out he should be in jail, all the democrat’s are corrupt and California is run by 1 party, one party that has made us dead last in education and many other problems.

MAGA, Trump for president, Humboldt loves Trump!

      • It’s obvious that its the Republican’s fault for looking out for illegal companies and bribers and not US Citizens. Trump is a sell out and he should be in jail, all the Republican’s are corrupt and the USA is run by 1 party, one party that has made us dead last in the developed world and many other problems.
MAGA, Trump for Prison, Humboldt loves Equality.

      • This all boils down to the Question Trump asked when he used the word “shithole”. No one remembers the actual question , but he asked the Dems at the meeting why it was so important to them that we allow large numbers of legal immigrants into our country from shithole countries. The Dems wanted this as part of any deal. It is a good question bad language aside.. The answer is the same for why they want amnesty for 3.6 million DACA immigrants and continued chain migration which would add tens of millions more poor immigrants to our population. The Democratic party needs a lower class that is dependent on government assistance in order to stay in power. African American voters are beginning to get wise to the Democrats and won’t be as near unanimous in their support much longer. Every place in the country where African Americans are doing poorly are controlled by Democrats and have been for decades. They are starting to notice that they will do much better getting away from this dependency. Political animals like Huffman care only about their party winning politically not about bettering the country. I’m no rocket scientist but…

        • There are no “piece of shit” people. There are no “shithole” nations. Anyone who says otherwise is either confused or bereft of their soul. There is no choice between ourselves and others. It’s all and one.
PS. If you want people to stay in their own nations, insist your government establish policies that.promote economic well being worldwide and not just in white countries.
PPS. People who stand behind Trump stand behind bigotry, racism and mysogny.

          • Huffman wasn’t elected to represent the world, he was elected to represent the citizens of his district and the United States of America. If he would have campaigned on a platform of “I want to do everything possible to help other countries prosper at great detriment to America” he would not have been elected. It is so easy to label people who want rational and legal immigration as racist, but it is intellectually vapid and frankly lazy since that is all you have to do to end the debate in your mind. By the way, why put “piece of shit” in quotation marks as if I or anyone else used that particular term? Why the total focus on the word “shithole”? Real people use terms like that all the time and I went well beyond that. When people like Anderson Cooper are literally crying because someone used that word, its disingenuous at best.

            • Shithole shithole shithole. In other words, it’s not the word that is upsetting anyone. It’s the reversal of our national values that is behind the word that gets everyone freaked out .

If we are going to go with your ideas, then let’s you and I get to New York and go out in the harbor and package up the statue of Liberty and send it back.
We will agree that we don’t stand behind those words anymore.

We’ll get us a new statue that says, if you are rich, we want your business.

              Let’s go.

              • Look up the history of that plaque bg Lazarus on the Statue of Liberty. It was a small bit of personal commercial aggrandizement never meant to be the meaning of that edifice at all.

                • Here’s the part of the poem that most people associate with the statue:
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

The poem was written by poet Emma Lazarus to help raise money for the Statue’s pedestal and auctioned off with other artworks. According to Wikipedia, “The New Colossus” was the first entry read at the exhibit’s opening on November 2, 1883, and remained associated with the exhibit through a published catalog until the exhibit closed after the pedestal was fully funded in August 1885… but was forgotten and played no role at the opening of the statue in 1886…[In 1903]a plaque bearing the text of the poem was put on the inner wall of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.”

For over a 100 years it has been synonymous with the Statue.

                • It is a nice poem, but it isn’t in the constitution or part of any immigration statutes. The United States lets in over a million (1,000,000) LEGAL immigrants in each year so lets stop all the “we are a heartless country” bullsh*t. Do you really think it would be great if we just had no immigration safeguards at all? Really? Do you have children or grand children? I know that you want everyone to be equal, but that would mean equally poor off.

                • Warner,

I do have children and that is what makes me know that if we don’t want to live in gated communities, huddled in fear with armed guards, we either need to improve the condition of countries that some would describe as “shitholes” or we need to allow at least some to come here to provide a way of alleviating at least some of the problems.

If I lived in a country like Haiti, I would be pretty bitter watching my children die and I would be willing to do almost whatever I needed to protect them. I suspect there are people whose harsh lives will make them willing to do much more than I would.

                • Another no reply post, huh. Well anyway-

“The poem was engraved onto a plaque placed on the pedestal in 1903 — nearly two decades after the statue was unveiled — and that the monument wasn’t always associated with immigration.

Originally, the meaning of the monument had more to do with the abolition of slavery than with immigration. In the 1860s, French anti-slavery activist Edouard de Laboulaye had first proposed that France should make a gift of the statue, dubbed “Liberty Enlightening the World” and designed by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, both to commemorate the alliance between the U.S. and France during the American Revolution and the end of slavery in the U.S. after the Civil War, according to the National Park Service.”

Like many American things, the New Colossus plaque was a convenient appropriation to fit the times two decades later. The Statue of Liberty was an monument to anti- slavery activism than immigration.

              • Governor Jerry Brown declared state of emergency over Hepatitis A, in 3 major cities. (SD, SF, LA).

Calif passing bill that permanently limits water use inside and outside. Either spray your sidewalk or take a shower?

People are pooping on sidewalks, stairwells, commerce and public buildings and parks… wherever they want to. SF has a poop map to warn visitors of most impacted areas.

Shitholes are created by corrupt officials.

              • Values?
Did you know that America was based upon the 10 commandments of do unto others as you want them to do unto you?
Did you know that some of the countries that are invading other countries have a totally different “value” system that opposes the 10 commandments? This is another reason why crime has skyrocketed. They value robbing from others.
Understanding the underlying “principles” is paramount.

                “By Karin McQuillan Roland Moorecock

                January 17, 2018

Three weeks after college, I flew to Senegal, West Africa, to run a community center in a rural town. Life was placid, with no danger, except to your health. That danger was considerable, because it was, in the words of the Peace Corps doctor, “a fecalized environment.”

In plain English: s— is everywhere. People defecate on the open ground, and the feces is blown with the dust – onto you, your clothes, your food, the water. He warned us the first day of training: do not even touch water. Human feces carries parasites that bore through your skin and cause organ failure. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that a few decades later, liberals would be pushing the lie that Western civilization is no better than a third-world country. Or would teach two generations of our kids that loving your own culture and wanting to preserve it are racism.

Last time I was in Paris, I saw a beautiful African woman in a grand boubou have her child defecate on the sidewalk next to Notre Dame Cathedral. The French police officer, ten steps from her, turned his head not to see.

I have seen. I am not turning my head and pretending unpleasant things are not true. Senegal was not a hellhole. Very poor people can lead happy, meaningful lives in their own cultures’ terms. But they are not our terms. The excrement is the least of it. Our basic ideas of human relations, right and wrong, are incompatible.

As a twenty-one-year-old starting out in the Peace Corps, I loved Senegal. In fact, I was euphoric. I quickly made friends and had an adopted family. I relished the feeling of the brotherhood of man. People were open, willing to share their lives and, after they knew you, their innermost thoughts.

The longer I lived there, the more I understood: it became blindingly obvious that the Senegalese are not the same as us. The truths we hold to be self-evident are not evident to the Senegalese. How could they be? Their reality is totally different. You can’t understand anything in Senegal using American terms.

Take something as basic as family. Family was a few hundred people, extending out to second and third cousins. All the men in one generation were called “father.” Senegalese are Muslim, with up to four wives. Girls had their clitorises cut off at puberty. (I witnessed this, at what I thought was going to be a nice coming-of-age ceremony, like a bat mitzvah or confirmation.) Sex, I was told, did not include kissing. Love and friendship in marriage were Western ideas. Fidelity was not a thing. Married women would have sex for a few cents to have cash for the market. What I did witness every day was that women were worked half to death. Wives raised the food and fed their own children, did the heavy labor of walking miles to gather wood for the fire, drew water from the well or public faucet, pounded grain with heavy hand-held pestles, lived in their own huts, and had conjugal visits from their husbands on a rotating basis with their co-wives. Their husbands lazed in the shade of the trees. Yet family was crucial to people there in a way Americans cannot comprehend.

The Ten Commandments were not disobeyed – they were unknown. The value system was the exact opposite. You were supposed to steal everything you can to give to your own relatives. There are some Westernized Africans who try to rebel against the system. They fail.

We hear a lot about the kleptocratic elites of Africa. The kleptocracy extends through the whole society. My town had a medical clinic donated by international agencies. The medicine was stolen by the medical workers and sold to the local store. If you were sick and didn’t have money, drop dead. That was normal.

So here in the States, when we discovered that my 98-year-old father’s Muslim health aide from Nigeria had stolen his clothes and wasn’t bathing him, I wasn’t surprised. It was familiar.

In Senegal, corruption ruled, from top to bottom. Go to the post office, and the clerk would name an outrageous price for a stamp. After paying the bribe, you still didn’t know it if it would be mailed or thrown out. That was normal.

One of my most vivid memories was from the clinic. One day, as the wait grew hotter in the 110-degree heat, an old woman two feet from the medical aides – who were chatting in the shade of a mango tree instead of working – collapsed to the ground. They turned their heads so as not to see her and kept talking. She lay there in the dirt. Callousness to the sick was normal.

Americans think it is a universal human instinct to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It’s not. It seems natural to us because we live in a Bible-based Judeo-Christian culture.

We think the Protestant work ethic is universal. It’s not. My town was full of young men doing nothing. They were waiting for a government job. There was no private enterprise. Private business was not illegal, just impossible, given the nightmare of a third-world bureaucratic kleptocracy. It is also incompatible with Senegalese insistence on taking care of relatives.

All the little stores in Senegal were owned by Mauritanians. If a Senegalese wanted to run a little store, he’d go to another country. The reason? Your friends and relatives would ask you for stuff for free, and you would have to say yes. End of your business. You are not allowed to be a selfish individual and say no to relatives. The result: Everyone has nothing. The more I worked there and visited government officials doing absolutely nothing, the more I realized that no one in Senegal had the idea that a job means work. A job is something given to you by a relative. It provides the place where you steal everything to give back to your family.

I couldn’t wait to get home. So why would I want to bring Africa here? Non-Westerners do not magically become American by arriving on our shores with a visa.

For the rest of my life, I enjoyed the greatest gift of the Peace Corps: I love and treasure America more than ever. I take seriously my responsibility to defend our culture and our country and pass on the American heritage to the next generation.

African problems are made worse by our aid efforts. Senegal is full of smart, capable people. They will eventually solve their own country’s problems. They will do it on their terms, not ours. The solution is not to bring Africans here.

We are lectured by Democrats that we must privilege third-world immigration by the hundred million with chain migration. They tell us we must end America as a white, Western, Judeo-Christian, capitalist nation – to prove we are not racist. I don’t need to prove a thing. Leftists want open borders because they resent whites, resent Western achievements, and hate America. They want to destroy America as we know it. As President Trump asked, why would we do that?

We have the right to choose what kind of country to live in. I was happy to donate a year of my life as a young woman to help the poor Senegalese. I am not willing to donate my country. “

            • The average genetic background of most people living in Mexico is mostly indigenous a large percentage of European small percentage of black and Asian is a melting Pot of genetics a lot of the industrial jobs went to Mexico some because of the EPA like battery lead acid and others for economic reasons they have strong agriculture avocados peppers and a lot of the greens that we cannot grow in the winter time they are some of the hardest working people’s throughout the United States picking the fruit and harvesting the vegetables maybe Amazon will build a robot that can do their job right now they have been putting the food on the table for most of us keeping the price down and feeding America mostly unseen and now it seems unwanted when they go the price of your food will go skyrocketing I have been thanking them for a long time and most of the farmers have to a lot of people have lost their way Financial collapse is on its ??? We are being set up for a super economic collapse like we have never seen before super depression hold on to your money you might need a bucket full

          • Obviously a comment from a young, liberal democrat. Anything that goes against their belief brings out those words they love to use.
Fact remains, the democrats would not vote for the budget, and with a sixty vote needed in the senate, the republicans only have fifty one members.
(Remember Roy Moore? The job done on him was never about him) the democrats say it’s to protect the “dreamers” which actually are still protected until June?
What we Ned is a comprehensive immigration law that addresses the whole illegal immigration issue. And like it or not, they had better work together!

            • It was the Republican’s job to find 9 votes in the Senate. These are the rules of engagement.
The Republicans have the opportunity to override that rule, but they don’t want to because they know they are about to lose the majority in November.
You accuse Lotta of youth. Well, what do have you to say to me? I remember pre-war Germans. I recognize what is happening in this country right now.

        • The fact is, your family came from a shithole. Unless you are 100% native of course.

          • parallel universe

Right on Scooter. And the natives are 100% ready for these racists to get back to wherever they came from. We got no time for the hypocritical BS.

Their people came here with nothing but lice and guns. They killed our people, stole our land, and now they want to blame the poor who come here today for their problems?

            Pitiful lack of insight.

          • Really? That sort of simplification is equivalent to saying America was founded by the Puritans. Many people left their country of birth for economic advancement because they were suffering hardship but a surprising number of them left as a simply opportunity to make more. Not because they had nothing. American was the land of opportunity to make millions.

Some were sent there as they were rebels who lost. Some were stolen for profit. Some as a sentence for crimes. Some were simply adventurers. And some came because they were odd and wanted to ne in a place that tolerated it. Some of my ancestors came because, while successful enough where they were, had a political disagreement with their neighbors.

But there also were people who came along with their compatriots in order to expand criminal societies. To continue to exercise their old frauds and violence on those leaving. Why not at least try weed them out? Not that I think Trump hit on the right method to do it.

    • Before everyone joins in the food fight below, it might be helpful to read this report on what led up to the government shutdown here: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-39698546

It will take you less than five minutes and then at least you will have some facts to add to the insults and blame occurring below.

This opinion piece by the more conservative Forbes (generally considered to lean right– https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/forbes/ ) also offers a perspective on how government shutdowns will affect us. https://www.forbes.com/sites/stancollender/2018/01/20/government-shutdowns-last-night-became-the-new-standard-operating-procedure-in-washington/#3f46e5612936

      • Honestly Kym, I wouldn’t use the bbc propaganda as a ‘truth’ standard. They use to be good, un-bias journalism but that is in the past. I use to read them loyally until I realized all they do is mimic the echo chamber from a liberal standpoint from what ever country they want to focus. All they have become is a liberal mouthpiece. I wish there was a paper out there that would just give un-bias reporting and let people make up their own minds.

        • Then please offer a conservative piece about what led up to the shutdown. I find the BBC very fair and they are consistently rated in the top ten most neutral sources which is why I chose their version. However, I’m open to anything that is factually based.

          • Jay Sekulow lays out the truth, for one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEp7-ddKcxk

The Dems want it to stay on the table for their talking points for the next election.
The Dems turned their backs on 6 years of DACA and CHP’s (the program that covers basic healthcare for children who financially fall between the cracks, you know, the working mom’s kids).
and more, is covered in his podcast, especially the last half. He probably has an update video by now, I haven’t searched.

There are others who cover the truths.
You can watch and listen to the meetings yourself, between the President and the Senators.
You can watch and listen to the press release briefings with Sarah Sanders.
The Dems wanted nothing to do DACA or CHiP’s.

The Dems don’t care about the National Forests, Dreamers, Security, or any Constitutional issue. They are not the same Dems that your grandparent’s adored.

Remember the video in 2013 where Chuck Schumer calls a government shutdown an idiocy?

People have had enough of the corruption and are uniting for Truths, not party’s. They’ve become so united, twitter calls them russian bots, laugh my ass off. At least they’re no longer called hitler’s, I suppose.
The trending hashtag is now “ReleaseTheMemo”. Both left and right tyrants are going down. For reals.

          • Kym, the conservative treehouse has been rock solid to date. (I never trust any politician or media to stay true, but they’re a trust-able source so far).

Direct from the horse’s mouth is the best, of course. Follow the White House on youtube and twitter.

          • The Wall Street Journal published the story about the Jerk boinking the porn star while the Mrs. was home with the baby. Hardly a left wing outfit. A number of previously deemed “conservative” outlets have published unfriendly observations on the Jerk’s behavior. What’s really stupid about the porn star story is that the Jerks lawyer admits they paid the lady 130 grand to chill but still deny it happened. And I’ll bet some of the folks here believe the denial ….kool aid folks. Has it occurred to any of you that FOX is the fake news king.

            • And that is related to this article how? I think you might not have a grasp of why Trump got elected. It wasn’t a battle of morality. If Trump was not saintly, his opponent was worse as her personal failings were both a violation of her oaths of office and endangered the country.

No. It was a battle between those the Democrats screwed over and those who thought Trump might screw them over over. The Democrats still haven’t learned from this that no one will take their claims that they are noble and their opponent is awful when their own behavior is so bad. They forgot the plausibility part of plausible denial.

Truth is I don’t care that much if Trump is a philanderer. Even if what the Democrats is true, Trump is better than they are. Liberals are scary dangerous, tinkering with everyone without a by your leave.

Liberals are stuck believing in their own stereotypes about conservatives. They cast everyone not with them as an enemy. I don’t think they would ever be flexible.

              • Damn, here I am about as liberal as they come and I love and stick up for a lot of conservatives. [Whistling casually with a sly grin] I wonder who is guilty of stereotyping?

C’mon, you are usually pretty reasonable. That last paragraph is totally unfair.

                • Kim, while you may be a liberal, you also seem to be an ethical and moral person. That is a huge difference between you and Ms Clinton. I recently read Donna Brazile’s book “Hack”. Very interesting how Hillary f__ked over Mr Bernie Sanders for the Democratic Party nomination. This written by a lifelong social injustice fighter.

Sticking up for people who are attacked is the same as a kid sticking up for the kid on the playground who is being bullied, something I have been teaching my kid to do (stick up for someone being bullied). Right now our politicians are bullying anyone who doesn’t agree with them. Its wrong, and it always will be wrong.

While liberals and conservatives may not be able to work well together at this point in our history, anyone who is ethical and moral in deed can. Calling each other names generally shows a lack of respect to each other, which is why I myself don’t give any weight to someone doing it. The slurs some people give each other on this site make a good example of what is wrong in our society right now. Zero tolerance for each other.

I believe the question we have arrived at is at what point do we stop tolerating our political advisories? While the answer ideally should be never, realistically it appears that it has already arrived with many people. Untrue (read fake news) is in large part responsible for this. I have never read anything I would call fake news on your site, which is why I read it.

Mr Huffman’s statement that this current political stalemate is the fault of Republicans is the same as name calling. He speaks with a forked tongue, as our native americans reportedly used to say.

For me, Guest’s last paragraph should read “some progressives”, not “liberals” in order to be true.

Have a great day Kim (any day I wake up breathing is a great day), and consider yourself an excellent ethical and moral journalistic warrior.

                • Substituting in “Some liberals” would have been fine (and I also would have agreed with substituting in “some conservatives.”) But stereotyping a whole group is always inaccurate and in this case is part of the problem.

(Also, thank you for the kind words!)

            • Dave [edit] By the second month of Trump’s presidency, police had arrested 1500 criminals nation-wide who are connected with the pedophile rings. This was triple the number of arrests made in the year 2014 under Barack Obama, which amounted to a little over 400. In January 2017, just days after Trump’s inauguration, a human trafficking syndicate was exposed in California, resulting in 474 arrests. 28 children and 27 adults were rescued. Your upset becauseTrump took your candy off the table! Trump our great president who was voted in by the people stands for the people is a germaphobe is not going to lower himself like you and people know this. The Dem will say anything to attack because there losers who care nothing about the American children, the American Vets Your happy with all the illegals invading the African American communities because the Dems need there vote’s Trump 2020 Jared or Ivanka 2024 The Trump dynasty will rule and the people’s vote is being heard!

          • The BBC is far from neutral in it’s reporting on anything go do with Trump. They are squarely in the “your mom’s so fat that” brand of insulting him. Of course most Brits take the American press as their source and the American press has achieved insanity these days so what else can be expected.

          • https://townhall.com/tipsheet/guybenson/2018/01/19/schumer-shutdown-senate-dems-brag-about-filibustering-spending-bill-to-keep-government-open-n2436857

Although facts have little to do with the votes in this case, it comes down to the Democrats mustered enough votes to bar cloture on a one month spending extension. They did so thinking that the public would blame the President and Republicans for their “heartless intend to deport innocent children,”, which they insisted had to be part of this extension, when what really happened is that they knew their leverage for lots of wants and demands was lessened if they did not create a crisis that created pressure on Republicans and the President. DACA was just the most publicly sympathetic thing they could use as a poison pill.

In truth DACA is still being actively negotiated and to make it a part of a one month extension bill is power playing at its worst. It’s even deterimental to insist on another unilateral policy on immigration sure to fail to hold. The President wants his wall, at least on paper, and the Democrats are not going to let him fulfill his promise if they can stop it. They think that they could stop the President from doing anything at all on immigration if they could isolate DACA as the biggest of the President’s bargaining chips. They like the grossly ineffective program as it is and also know the Supreme Court will nullify DACA. Now is their moment to get DACA cemented in and for it to cease a millstone around their own necks, and remove it as a threat to their continued refusal to action immigration.

Did you see the magic words “filibuster’, ‘cloture’ in the BBC article? Did you see the snarky little bit about the first time a closure has happened in the same part controlling both houses, when the truth is patently obvious that they did not have enough to invoke cloture without Democrats voting with them. The article is written to make the most of “machinations” of the Republicans and mentions nothing to the detriment of Democrats, who are even busier scheming and plotting, not for a policy but power in general.

          • Listen to Mark Levin M-F 3-6 locally. Best radio host out there. Writes books, too. He explained on Friday the whole sham. 83% of fed employees will be on the job Monday. More fear porn from the left. Huffman is a mouthpiece for ignorant anti-fa types. He should be run out of the state on a rail.

          • Kym, you may as well talk to the wall. Facts are from these folks’ area of interest.
It is a fact that Republicans have a majority in both the House and Senate. It’s a fact they cannot use that to get the job of funding the government done. What’s to argue about beyond that? They are trying to blame the skillet for dinner being late.

            • Again. A simple majority, especially a one vote one with an absent member, does not give ‘control’ to the Republicans normally and means absolutely nothing in a case needed a 60% vote for cloture.

It’s not the facts that are questionable. It’s the interpretation of the facts that is ludicrous. Liberals blamed the Republicans for obstruction when the Democrats wanted a DACA law under Obama, and did not object when he just upped and wrote the law himself. Yet they blame the Republicans for not overriding the obstruction of Democrats now. And worse yet, are having a hissy fit over Trump doing just what Obama did in unilaterally ending DACA.

The bottom line is the Democrats make up moral outrage tailored to suit their own behavior at the moment. And then, rubbing salt into the insult, complain when it’s pointed out.

The bottom line is fairly simple. The Democrats can not afford to delay a law on DACA until after it expires. It makes them look unsympathetic. Yet they can not negotiate with Trump in good faith because it makes them look unsympathetic too. Heaven forbid that Trump should actually succeed in making them find a compromise. That, after all the Democrat spew, makes them look ridiculous, which is worse than unsympathetic. So their solution, which has become their go to decision, is to gum up the works, doing nothing until they win majority in the next election. You’d think they would worry a bit over the harm it causes but they don’t.

The pressure is increased because Trump’s threat to end DACA if Congress does not get their act together will be held to be constitutional by the Supreme Court. I don’t think Trump wants it totally eliminated but knows it will be a political football until Congress creates actual law. So his idea of a victory is a negotiated law in which everyone gains something and no one gains anything. The Democrats, on the other hand, act like giving the smallest concession would be fatal.

And there in lies the awfulness of spew. It’s both hard to work with the spewer, even for the good of the country. And it’s hard for the spewer claw back his spew and work with the recipient of his spew.

This makes Huffman, apparently hardly ever not spewing, a real liability to both sides. As are many posters who egg him on to ever greater ugliness.

              • Ya need 9 extra votes. Ya gotta play ball to get them. The game got harder for your team when Trump spent every cent of his political Capital on giving your.money to the wealthiest… which will exacerbate income inequality, further digging us into our own shit hole (did you see the guardian’s piece on our poverty?)

It’s the income inequality, not the immigration that’s causing the problems you care about.

You’ve had your attention diverted. Remember the WMDs?

                They weren’t real either.

We the people are being played. Are you gonna see it, or be like Trump and let your ego lead you into darkness and fear?

                • Isn’t Time the mag that made Hitler man of the year?

                • According to many, the civil war was not at all about slavery, the Holocaust never happened, there was a shooter on the grassy knoll, there was never a moon landing, the pyramids are evidence of alien culture, etc etc etc.

Spinning in your own world, oblivious to reality, complexity and common sense, is a long standing American foible. Yours is apparently living on the anti Trump merry go round, where every comes back to being interpreted as his fault. And it’s as real as your pasted meme.

                  Oh well, moving on…

      • Sorry Kym your wrong again..I do enjoy your site, but you pushing you liberal agenda stinks.. you want to legalize 3 million illegals that’s it…not gonna happen..good job Trump..nice try libs you won’t be blackmailing anyone.. trust me this will backfire on ya..

        • Bushman, I’m not sure where you got that I’m pushing my liberal agenda? A) Using BBC as a trusted source? Or B, publishing what our representative to Congress said?

If A, I explained that I chose among the top ten media sources most consistently rated as presenting neutral news.

If B, I would publish what our representative said even if he was also in the KKK. Whether you are for or against Huffman’s political stances, voters should know what is said by their representative.

And, if you think I approve of Huffman’s hyperpartisan language in this and in social media, you are also wrong.

          • Thank you, Kym, for speaking up against Huffman’s hyperpartisan language.
I, like many, assumed you must be fine with it, but your recent post proves that wrong.

            • If Trump is to be derided for his spewy tweets, and he is, then Huffman should suffer the same fate. If Huffman’s spew ends up constantly in articles and the selected tweets below, then Trump’s should too.

It’s selection that shows the bias. Just like the national news, which has a filter that allows Democrat’s opinions to be written as if they were facts and only covers selected Republican’s opinions in ways to represent them as a joke.

It’s not that I think that Republicans are better than Democrats in aggregate but that the press has decided to pretend the Democrat’s crap doesn’t stink at all.

              • C’mon, be fair. The President’s tweets are of far more interest because he holds far more power than a representative. And, perhaps reflecting his colorful and, in my opinion, erratic personality, they are highly entertaining (in my opinion, not in a good way)–which makes them easy to talk about in the media.

Huffman’s posts are not of much interest to the national media because

                A) he is from a relatively unpowerful representative of a mostly remote rural area.
                B) the comments are not unlike many of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle. Many if not most representatives do the same thing. However, this is new from a president.

                • In fact, that he is like a parrot, repeating what he thinks will be popular, doesn’t mean he is not even more harmful. Trump spews and a limitless number of press and pundits will be all over it. Huffman spews and it goes unexamined. Lack of examination in the place it is reported is seen as confirmation. Repeating it without comment is confirmation. Especially when alternative views are never to be chosen to be published.

You say not but it’s continuous presence says it is. If it did not end up being repeated, maybe he would revise his words to be less deliberately inflammatory. Wouldn’t that be better for everyone?

              • Isn’t that called putting the cart before the horse?
Trump didn’t start the rude obnoxious tweets, the dems did.

                • Oh, heck. He’s just as bad as the Democrats. He’s never been a stateman. That is the only reason he got elected. The press tried to buried him the minute they finally figured out he was a serious challenge to their darlings. It’s only because he could match them nasty for nasty that he got elected.

Why the press still can’t be rational about him is due to their own gross mistakes and subsequent embarassment. And I suspect Trump, having succeeded against so many enemies, will never give it up either.

It’s spew for the duration from both sides of the battle lines. I just wish the liberals (and yes, kym I mean all the ones that I’ve heard here,) would admit their kinship with Trump in this. Spew is spew no matter which direction it’s heading.

                • Can you point out where I spew? I sure try not to.

                • Do you spew? No more than any reasonably civilized human does. Probably less directly than many. But, letting Huffman’s spew have an audience whenever he chooses, without comment or balance, it’s simply letting someone else do the dirty work for you (clearly you would not post it without finding it acceptable, even important).

This country is drowning in hostility at the moment, oscillating between paralysis and tyranny. Paralysis when the hostile parties are in precarious balance and tyranny when one side gains a temporary ascendancy. The ascendancy, with out respect for differences, just fuels the violent swing back. With little gain for either pole. And much misery in between. I think we would be much better without it.

In times of immediate crisis, this swinging is natural. But there is no crisis at the moment. It’s totally invented and should be an embarassment to those who create it just out of boredom.

Reporting it may be somewhat unavoidable but reporting only one side without comment leaves makes that spew is a successful policy. Trump’s or Huffman’s . It doesn’t matter. It’s toxic rabble rousing. It’s not information.

And yes, I’m a hectoring, holier-than-thou poster. I certainly want to be. Holier, I mean. The hectoring is unfortunate.

                • Guest,

By your criteria, everyone spews not just liberals?

As I said in this comment thread above I don’t approve of Huffman’s hyperpartisan speech. However, above the comment section, my job is to present information and the North Coast’s representative’s response to the shutdown is news. My response to it is not.

If you don’t like hyperpartisan spew, please don’t do it by accusing all liberals or all conservatives of some negative behavior. I know how frustrating it can be to see commenters throw angry insults without solid facts. But please join me in trying to reach towards sane discussion. We both might find it hard at times and if I start to spew, please tell me. But let’s try.

    • The Mexican government should build a border wall to keep all these stupid shit hole Americans out they have enough to take care of without all this stupidness

  • Mountain Lion Lady

Jared Huffman for President is 20-20 in 2020

  • You kids need to learn to play together! AND…if congress didn’t get paid no matter what, I venture to guess crap like this would not happen.

    • So true. Especially if the had to face their unpaid and complaining staff. A few would stand by their “principles” but most suddenly develop an interest in finding a way out of the dilemma. As it is, they’d rather chance playing to the press than allow even the slightess thing that might reflect well on their opponents.

      • Jared exhibits the standard lack of ability, and high order incompetence characteristic of our business-as-usual-for-the-rich-only government.

Mr Huffman, if you have something new to offer, or are capable of anything at all, then get busy providing your constituency with newer and better. Meanwhile, your derision of the process is puerile and worthless.

They do this every year, and then solve it at the 23.99th hour, to make themselves appear conscientious. It’s nothing new, and Mr Huffman, I am not impressed by anything you have done here.

  • What your Representative Huffman doesn’t tell you is that he wanted the shutdown in light of our President’s accomplishments, believing that the public will blame the republicans. Huffman needs to do his job, it is his fault as well as all of the politicians who voted for this shutdown. It is time to drain the swamp, get rid of those politicians who sit and do nothing!

    • Great idea let’s start at the top with the biggest, in multiple ways, do nothing piece of crap, President Trump!!!

    • True, and how short the memories are when this sort of thing was happening when clinton was in office. Folks forget so quickly. But to me it all seems like a theater show where you watch it over and over again, only real differance is each time the actors take turns playing the hero or the villin, same tatics same “outrage” it is nothing but a way to get the masses to puck a side and fight each other instead of refusing to keep reliving the same nightmare over and over again.
We as a people need to come together and meet on common ground. Instead of fighting over things that are so far one way or the other and find things we all want focus on those. Extreames one way or the other will never work anyways.

  • Yeah, right Mr. Huffman.

  • 60 votes needed in Senate to avoid a shutdown, that requires democrats, simple math, the Senate dems put the needs of their beloved “dreamers” over the voting “deplorable” base

    • you should read the news, and have some mercy

actually, this shutdown is brought to us by Trump hating on helping poor children.
It was all sewn up Thursday morning when the orange slug said he would veto it if we continued to help poor children.
This one is directly on him.

      • You can spin it however you want you aren’t fooling anybody

      • Extending the CHIPS and I think DACA 2 extra years, from 4 to 6, is hateful to children? You don’t know what the acronyms stand for?

        • Trump WAS going to that, but he changed his mind btween 10am and noon.

          From voice of america
“In the span of a few hours on Thursday, prospects for a deal on immigration in Congress — including a solution for immigrants fearing the demise of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program — had gone from one senator calling negotiations “all peachy” to President Donald Trump announcing he’s tired of helping people from “shithole” countries.”

  • Sharpen your pencil

Is this infant serious? The dems have some fault here also, it takes two to tango! Btw, why should we be talking about law abiding citizens lives suffering because the unlawful can’t get assistance for school! Blame your parents for getting you here illegally! Foe one I am tired of the dems acting like spoiled little brats whenever theyh don’t get their way, Huffman is turnikng into the new Pelosi!

    • I must have missed something. How are law abiding citizens suffering because of DACA? And lets not forget that the republicans spent the last six years of the Obama administration trying to shut down the government. Talk about spoiled brats.

      • Yup you missed it as usual. Multiple Millions going to support illegal immigrants in exchange for their illegal liberal votes. It’s the way the regime remains in power here in California.

      • Could be the thousands of illegals showing up at the border, worried about the fact they are illegally crossing, are 1reassured that nothing will ever be done about it? As usual? Could it be the creeping idea that native born Americans have no right to say who comes here and who doesn’t? Could be it has contributed to the ever increasing lawlessness because it there are no immigration rules that are ever enforced. If the government doesn’t respect its own laws enough to enforce them for fear of complaints, then who will not pick and chose which laws to follow.

Besides this whole shut down is not about DACA, that illegal circumvention that Obama used to avoid following a law he didn’t like when Congress was doing its usual passive agressive avoidance riutine. It’s just something that has a history of a sympathic response from the American people the Democrats are using to scrabble back some of the power they lost. They would not take ‘yes’ for an answer on this. They wanted to use it as a tool to get everything.

        • The republicans have been in charge of the legislature for 7 years and congress has an approval rating in the teens. What does that tell you? Time to clean out the real swamp.

      • Sharpen your pencil

Members of our military are suffering, training and payment! But yeah we should be concerned about illegal immigrants right over the people that protect ours…

        • Military members will always be paid. I was in the military through 2 shutdowns and never missed a single check. They have been in fy2018 spending since the julian date year change i forget when it is but sometime in oct or september.

          • I was in a couple of furloughs and had delayed payment although required to work. But salary is not the only effect. Anything requiring special pay was delayed or cancelled, sometimes not to be renewed. Supplies were not sent. Contracts renegotiated. Services shut down. Etc.

            • There is also the soilder and sailors act that protects service members from late fees and credit problems that might arise as a result of not reciving pay for this and several other reasons

Read up on Skid Row in L.A. The libs running the city are spending millions on illegals but nothing on basic services now they have a hepatitis outbreak so now you tell me the libs would let a city fall to waste as long as they can bribe millions for votes!

        • parallel universe

The conservatives are spending all the money on wars leaving us with poor people and no housing you say? How can they be so short-sighted sighted I ask? How is it they manipulate otherwise good people into thinking racism and xenophobia are the solution to wealth inequality?

          • Oh, because human’s are all willing to resort to all sorts of nastiness to get their way? And who is immigrating, how and in what numbers and with what goals defines whether the immigration is good or bad for the native population.

How the same people can deride the “American Dream” in the native population as greedy and destructive yet laud the same goal in immigrants is very confusing. It’s like assuming everyone sucks except those who are strangers. Those are going to be defined as good.

I would prefer to exclude people such as murders, criminals, the hateful, etc if I can.

A little xenophobia is good if it, for example, excluded Nazis after WWII.

    • Please do a bit more research. All our (Dem) reps have done everything they possibly could to avert this. But the GOP is utterly dysfunctional at this point. They dont even work with each other! -much less the other party. But the people ‘at the top’ dont care and dont understand how a government works. Please get educated.

      • Sharpen your pencil

I personally have a bigger issue with our leaders towing the party line, which is what both sides have been doing for far too long. The media is constantly attempting to divide America based off this current climate. Anyone who thinks Obama was terrible is a racist, anyone that doesn’t agree with the left is a racist. This shit has got to end. Then their are clowns like Huffman, how the hell is this the kind of action that is praised!

        • JustWantToHeartheEndoftheStory

“Towing” the party line? Dude, use the eraser on your pencil and not auto correct. Huffman is a party man, as in, what the DNC says, he repeats, over and over. House of Reps passed a budget, it was up to the Senate to vote on it. The Dems needed to posture, and DACA is their baby. DACA has nothing to do with the budget. But it looks real good to their base.

      • Watch the meetings. Seriously.

  • Dude! Your nostril is not a pencil sharpener!

  • Congress has been so cowardly as to refuse to act on anything they think opens them up to criticism. Belittling people with differing opinions is not policy but it seems its Huffman’s policy.
So the same rut of insulting people who respresent other opinions, failing to work with them then blaming them for it should not be a way to get relected. It should be a way to lose elections.

Enough temper tantrum politics. Grow up and seek agreement rather than safety in agreeing to nothing so responsibily can be denied.

It’s not all about your interests, Huffman. Even here there are plenty of other ideas about what government should be doing. Again. Grow up.

    • You are correct. 7 years of republican do nothing congress. Time for a massive change. Send the bums home in “18”.

      • Sharpen your pencil

And you’re not drinking the kool aid? Get real!

      • I think a little more than just sending them home is in order. After all, they colluded with the Russians to elect a racist idiot and a moral midget with no government or political experience to high office. It’s a wonder they get coffee made in the mornings. It’s probably brought in with the McDonalds.

Colluding with a country used to be called treason and extreme measures were taken for those convicted of it. Have you noticed the number of extreme Republicans retiring? They think if they run away, we will forget that they sold out our country for dollars from Russia.

And the strategy is working great for the Russians, look at the divisiveness and chaos in our nation created because the wealthy few did not want to pay their fair share. And don’t tell me they are strapped for money. Look at the Dow and the profits lately. I would say they are doing very well in spite of the political bullshit. They just want more. It used to be called greed and the wealthy can’t abide the truth.

And the shutdown is just political posturing on both sides, creating chaos and trying to assign blame to effect how folks vote. It’s how both sides try to convince us that they are doing something besides taking all the money they can from everywhere. I think it’s called business as usual. There will be winners and losers but I can’t help but feeling that it’s the American people who are losing.

Fascism will not make us a success even if we are the most powerful country in the world militarily. And we are all, all immigrants, even Native Americans, we all came from somewhere else. And remember, outrage is just a way of jerking you around, whether from the left or the right.

        – Richard Brautigan

    • You should tell that to the Biggest, as I said in SO many ways, kid of the bunch the Juvenile Delinquent in the White House!!!

  • Huffman is a liar.

The federal government was shut down on purpose by the Democrats because they linked the unrelated immigration issue to passing the budget. They are holding the entire government hostage to get their way. They are counting on a compliant main stream media to help them fool low information voters & blame the Republicans.

    • Republicans control the entire federal government right now. You might as well be blaming leprechauns for the shut down.

      • If that were true, there would be no shut down. If there is one President who values compromise, it’s this one. What you mean is they have a majority. But they do not have enough of one to force the Democrats to stop preventing the vote on the needed legislation to keep funding going.

But spitting out insults is easy. Working out conflicts is hard.

In fact it’s a fine example of the politics of toddlers. Make demands as if the only person that matters then grab anyway if refused then lie down and scream if it doesn’t work out.

      • No one political party or the president of the United States controls the whole country, our system was built with many checks and balances, that’s why we have a shut down. If one party controlled everything there would be no shutdowns.

        • I have a hard time following your logic. It’s incontrovertible that the Republicans control the House, the Senate and the Presidency. The issue isn’t who has control, it’s can they govern with that control? I am not convinced that the Republicans could organize anything other than a bullshit session.

          • Again, if they controlled the House and the Senate, this whole thing wouldn’t have happened. Look up cloture. It needs 60 votes. The Repubicans have 50 (ish.) The Democrats are using that to prevent governing. It’s really that simple.

            • Yes just like Obama’s scotus pick. Over a year and no hearings. Just like defunding the EPA. Just like a giant tax cut for big corporations. Stopping this “governing” is important to humanity.

    • Well said.

Sure am glad Huffman is not my representative

  • Dems choose illegal immigration over their military. Disgusting

    • It’s largely republican farm owners that hire illegal immigrants. Maybe you should ask yourself why your political party hates the children (dreamers) of these immigrants so much that they are willing to shut down the government (that they fully control) over it.

      • Yes and many companies run by Sunshine Democrats hire illegals too. Make liberal noises while paying for their own business bottom line politicians. It has become a universal practice in preventing the enforcement of inconvenient laws while lying to the American public, who suffers by it.

Using the term “hating children” is just the sort of ugliness that keeps the politics of disruption going. You want to make sure your opinion has power by diminishing others. That is the real ugliness. You distort the truth. It is certainly not “For the Children’s Sake” at all.

        • You’re the one diminishing others by calling them “illegals.” Dreamers did nothing wrong. They came here as children.

          • That does not make sense. Illegal is not a matter of morality. It is a matter of law.

Despite the attempt to use emotional blackmail to bully every Republican , this isn’t even about children. It is using children as a tool in political power games. DACA, being a regulation that Obama used to circumvent the Congress, is totally within the power of the current President. It’s one of the few clear powers in the Constitution. The President can terminate it and the Supreme Court will certainly uphold it.

Congress had the power to create law that would protect “dreamers” (what a silly term) but Obama couldn’t get them to do it and Trump can’t either. They are, as a group, too cowardly to allow their opponents, both parties, any participation in creating the law. They both prefer preventing the other having anything to giving on the slightest thing themselves.

This shut down, which would have been an intolerable failure to earlier politicians, has become the go to tool of the current set.

            • Sorry I hurt your feelings.

            • Well said! Thank you for putting together a thoughtful and cogent response, unlike so much of the petty name calling that currently passes for political debate.

              • He’s definitely calling people who immigrated here as children “illegals,” and calling “dreamers” a silly name. Is the American dream “silly” to you?

                • Actually yes but then your statement is nothing but a pot shot in the absence of anything meaningful or factual to say.

          • Hahaha!!! Jerkalasourus or whatever your name is, What is with all you folks who think illegals deserve to be here ?! Its absolutely rediculous. FYI boneheads, when you break the law, its called, u guessed it, illegal. Calling someone anti immigrant based off the fact they dont like illegals in their country is flat out laughable and sad.

Gotta pay to play, no free lunch sukkas!

God help us. God bless the USA.

      • You realise that daca was infact illegal and by ending it and throwing it back on the house to pass a legal means for them to stay here was perphaps the most civil and humane thing any single person has done for them. But most wont see it that way as the blinders of hate have been tightened to much and most cant see past their own thoughts.

    • By the way the Jerks tweet about the military being “shutdown” are just more ignorant lies on his score card. He may not know it but he is the one who can exempt the defense dept. from any cuts but of course this guy doesn’t know the first thing about being president. This is what happens when you send a kid to Washington to do a man’s job.

      • What really happens is each agency is given authority to act in how to meet the restricted budget. They choose who to lay off and who to keep on as their own establishing law requires. So the DOD will keep what they consider essential personnel in place but not pay a contractor timely. Or they may even order military personnel to work without pay. Lots of ways are available for awhile anyway.

A person who does not know how it works should worry about their own ignorance before they topell others who to blame. You’re just looking to get others to attack those you dislike as a convenient opportunity.

  • Bluehaired Hillbetty

Jared Puffman needs to get his head out of the clouds.

  • Christopher B Kramer

Hey Jared how did you vote? I’m sure you voted the party line, you never were a free thinker.

  • The only country that shuts down for non citizens over its own people

    • Yes, it’s the virtue of have a Constitution giving the power of the purse to the peoplels house. What you denigrate what has created an expanding democracy.

    • Democrat logic
      Non citizen=dreamer
      Own people=deplorable

      • And there is the result of the politics of name calling. It short circuits any possiblity of finding agreement.

      • Do you even read what you write?
For 8 years Barack Obama and the Dems tried working with a hostile house. And now you cant take it when it comes back to bite you?

        • Nonsense. I have never objected to an opposition party debating, maneuvering or even whining. I do object to that taking the form of insult as a substitute for debate or acting to damage the country in order to gain political power. And that is true no matter who is in office.

Go for hostile Congresses. If they had been successful with Obama, he might not have written the DACA regulations that he knew would not stand if his party lost the election. He gambled with the public trust and lost, creating this whole situation.

I strongly believe that Trump wants DACA to be tweaked but legalized in truth. He will agreed to it if the Democrats will paricipate in a general immigration reform. I think the Democrats would rather see violence than let that happen as long as they think they can get the public to blame Trump.

And there is the end game of name calling and insult and political lies.

  • Times have changed

    Trump is not a humanitarian.
What we need is more Jarred Juctice Huffman to show everyone one in the world we are a Democracy not a Republic trying to become corporate communism. The eagle 🦅 and the bear 🐻 everyone living fear and government policy dose not seem care .

    • I don’t think you could have mixed any more contradictions into one statement. Rights are the function of republics, not democracies. So, while democracies give power (at least on paper), republics keep mobs from using that power to abuse those they hate at the moment.

      • Ergo, the Dem s, pitiful as they may be, are not.going to be blackmailed into allowing human beings to be the scapegoats of the disenfranchised white people who want to blame Latino class for their problems.
Yes, I realize undocumented workers don’t have Rights, nonetheless they are totally being scapegoats in this nightmare.
These workers ADD to the economy.

        • Illegals take away from the individual worker. If there are enough of them, they might add to the economy in the aggregate. But individuals lose ground from what they had.

My first understanding of the cost came from talking to a worker who was a butcher in a mass meat processor at a good salary. He had just been laid off and replaced by immigrants at half his salary. He was 50 and scared that the wear and tear injuries he had would make it impossible to get hired even at a reduced pay. I saw it happen with Pacific Lumber. The back rooms of restaurants, who used to be filled with people unable to get other work but alway could pick up a job there and students working their way through college, got cheaper and better labor from illegals. So many lesser jobs now are no longer available to take up the slack for erratic native workers, from farms to manufacturers. I read this extends to engineers and medical techs now too.

Ever seeking a larger bottom line, employers are just as responsible for creating the distorted culture where people buy into being owed a livelihood rather than expecting to earn one. But to the individual, that is a meanless argument.

  • That momement you realize, politics is like looking at all the lil birds fight over that piece of garbage!

  • I will not vote for any of the people that are now in office in California in the next election. Huffman we are tired of paying for illegals, welfare families, bullet train to nowhere, gas taxes, higher dmv, oh and don’t forget representatives that don’t represent the tax payers. The shutdown can be blamed on both parties but if obama had not over stepped his authority some of this could have been avoided. Huffman disgusts me!

  • Again politics as usual. Party name calling, saying they have the people’s interest in mind, but it is all about the individual parties. Even shollow people work with each other better than politicians do. Forget about what party you belong to and consider the AMERICAN that you are suppose to be representing. Forget about being politically correct and get dirty. Quit listening to Hollywood and special intrests, listen to the real working person for a change. Quit washing their American dream down the drain trying to keep other countries happy. Quit making policy’s that apply to the people and not to the politicians and you might have more of a knowledge of what the average AMERICAN wants and needs instead of what other countries want. Quit bickering and do your job for a change instead of all this finger pointing.

  • So Huffman voted in the House to keep the government open? He can’t hardly blame anyone else of he didn’t vote for it himself.

  • My only problem is they don’t go far enough. All congressmen and senators should lose their paychecks and benefits for the duration of this “weekend shutdown”. If you believe this is necessary make it last til you get a real change instead of just some publicity. Surrender your paycheck and benefits Jared if you want anyone to take you seriously.

    • Most politicians, even if they are greedy enough to protect themselves, are rich enough to get by. The Conressmen, their staff and all the people who provide their perks should face lay off. I imagine the first time the Congress finds their favorite meal in the cafeteria unavailable or their mail not processed, they will find room in their hearts to restrain their insults enough to get something done.

  • Huffman, people like you with your troll politics are exactly the problem. Your politics of insult ,which you think is what your constituency wants, is an embarassment to even those who support your public opinions. It certainly is not to a way to achieve a compromise. It’s a tool to prevent it. Which ought to raise the question of what you really want. As it certainly is not compromise and agreement.

    • Thanks! I also am sick of this divisionary and polarizing blame game that the DEMs are pushing. There are very legitimate criticisms of Trump! I don’t like Trump, never was a REP backer but both sides have terrible and then occasionally good ideas. The current DEM game of whining and blaming is pretty sad. And to think- we could’ve had Bernie if the DNC and Hillary hadn’t illegally and immorally blocked his campaign. So yeah- now they whine and point fingers and want us all to hate hate hate. I refuse your bs line, Mr Huffman.

      • I like what you and Guest are saying but don’t paint Bernie as a golden boy … he was rewarded well for laying down and rolling over. I had high hopes for him until he did that and I saw that he was just another fat cat career politician and he lost my respect.

        • I didn’t notice that but I’ll keep my eyes open on him too. Hard to trust any politician. Never though of him as “golden boy” but more like the way best of 3 choices. I agree it’s important to criticize them all and stay objective. I feel like both parties now represent the corporate and very rich so I look for a guy who speaks for the workingman and blue collar.

  • Congressmen should not get full pay after retirement!

  • Good to know there are still people who can see through the Dems rhetoric. I for one am “disgusted and dismayed” with Mr. Huffman’s party-line voting record. Deal with immigration after you pass the budget bill, it is an entirely different matter!

  • Too bad the dems couldn’t have mustard this new found courage when obama was trying to pass single payer health care.

  • The Democrats are holding the spending bill up because they insist on amnesty for 3.6 million illegals which coupled with chain migration would lead to tens of millions of new democrat voters. Vicious politics at its worst. All this at the detriment to American citizens, especially lower class citizens. Shameful.

    • Your namesake, Werner Von Braun, was an immigrant who was granted amnesty for his crimes in order to work in the US. Do you think we should have deported him?

      • Probably but then he was considered to be too useful to be allowed to be used by others, so in he was brought. By the government for use by the government. Legally. What does that have to do with amnesty (again) for illegals.

        • Guest “What does that have to do with amnesty (again) for illegals.” Everything. Dude you better get to working mighty hard if you’re going to replace the Latino workforce. Don’t legal/illegal me. They are too valuable to let go. They bring more than they cost, six ways from Sunday.

          • They cost the native population big time. Mexican cartels or Bulgarians (aren’t they really Russians?), offering labor are bargain prices, bringing incompatible values with them and calling the struggle to adjust racism, language problems, forming voting blocks, etc.

It causes huge disruption and to blame the resulting stress on the licals is a worse form of racism than the locals offer.

    • Granted the “dreamers”are not yet citizens but they are not “illegals”. They have by granted legal status by both republican and democratic administrations. As to the claim that this is about democratic attempts to enhance their voting pool…..the Jerk has pretty much made sure anybody of color will think twice about voting republican. Surprising to find so many jerk supporters here he lost CA by 4 million votes. Oh I know its the mysterious invisible illegals who tipped the balance. Sure it was LMAO.

      • Have you ever applied for an #SSI? What documents do you need? If you get a job without an #SSI, can you still pay your taxes? If you don’t have the documents required for your own #SSI, and you use an #SSI and pay your taxes, where did the #SSI come from?
There’s more to the phrase illegal than what meets the eye.

      • I doubt there is anything in DACA that granted any sort of legal status to undocumented individuals. The name of the act is Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals. In other words, they aren’t legal, the government knows they are not legal but the government will set up a whole bureaucracy to officially circumvent the law because Obama couldn’t make Congress take action either.

    • Last I heard, we are talking about 800,000 children.

  • Democrats prioritizing their voting pool (illegal immigrants and the bleeding hearts that believe any discussion focused around immigration is “racist”) over the best interest of the Country and its leagal Citizens. Flat out disgusting display of political manipulation. Democratic thinking is a clinical disorder at this point.

  • Democrats shut down government. #SchumerShutdown.. plain and simple legislative terrorism refusing to pass agreeable provisions of government funding unless add-ons are included. Don’t fund the government unless illegal immigration DACA is included, while offering a side-order of border wall? wake up and smell the liberal air cause it stinks..

  • Huffman is a putz

  • Put up the wall get the illegals out .fuck the government

  • worthless trolls………..good on you Mr Huffman. I support you all the way

    • Most of these comments are one troll, guaranteed.

      • If so, they are doing a pretty good job of hiding their tracks. Anyone who doesn’t realize our community has a thriving conservative bent doesn’t look closely.

        • But uou’d never know it reading anything in the press. Only open comments allow that to be noticed.

Thank You Kym you do an amazing job with this site. Politics aside don’t get wrapped up in all these hateful comments there are two different viewpoints here hope everyone keeps it sociable. I am a somewhat conservative taxpaying small business owner. I know there are a few of us out there.

    • Good on you for layng blame on others, stirring hate and division, and for boasting about breaking your promises to Dreamers, military and constituents?

  • Please consider this: Pesident Donald Trump is the president of the United States of America thru the process of the people of the United States of America electing him to that office. He has chosen men and women to assist him in governing this great land. Perhaps we might best serve our country and community by honoring the office of the president, praying for the man and his enormous tasks and cooperating as much as our conscience allows. This may be the spirit of the heart that may help us say, “in order to form a more perfect union…” and live peaceably.

  • Three months ago, our elected officials new this day was coming. Since then, their meetings have failed to discuss a solution for DACA. Both Dems and Reps have said they came up with a proposal that would work. I get it that Dems want a DACA plan now, and Reps want to discuss it more. Bottom line in all of this is that Trump is the leader of this country, and should have stepped up and been a leader. Party doesn’t matter to me, but Trump has failed our country in this matter to be an effective leader and pull everyone together to avoid this shutdown.

    • It’s not magic. Obama couldn’t do it. Bush couldn’t do it til 9/11 gave him some leeway, for all the good that did us. It’s hard and needs willing participants.

At least Tump is willing to try. Obama and the Democrats gave up the attempt when they ran into difficulty the first year. They went straight into tyranny to get what they wanted without compromise. And left us exactly where we are today. Only the fighting is even nastier and more hardlined.

  • No one here mention that it needed 61 or 60 votes to pass. The rep have 51 votes, so how are they in control?
All politicians lie, just like Huffman did in his above statement.
The powers that be must be very happy at how they have divided the country, cause that’s how they keep their jobs and do nothing.

    • I did. But it’s a thought that interferes with the fantasy so it passed straight through one ear and out the other.

  • Stop listening to blowhards and propagandists. Watch for yourselves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fc5tIKFDy1s
(President Trump meeting with the bipartisan Senators over DACA)

More than 21,000 national park staff members will be furloughed meaning critical resource management, including important scientific monitoring to protect endangered species, will not happen.

Furloughed means they can’t work for others, can’t volunteer, can’t do anything except wait until politicians stop messing with them.

    • I don’t know what you mean about furloughed employees not being able to work or volunteer. Here’s what the Dept of Labor has to say: https://www.dol.gov/sequestration/OutsideEmploymentGuidance.pdf “Federal employees are free to accept any outside employment” (barring some ethical considerations.)

      • Without a byline, you have no idea who wrote that article nor what their agenda is. In these days few even big organizations keep their own foreign bureaus. The writing itself is questionable and superficial. I suspect it is piece of domestic journalism with the most biased parts edited out and the mildly biased parts passed off as fact. As for ratings, if journalists have lost all sense of proportion, of course they rate it as fair. They believe they are are right and therefore what they say is fair. Yet if you read that BBC article, there are plenty of one sided, the Republicans did it opinions and none to the detriment of the Democrats. Do you really believe that a lust of the dreadful happenings under Republican assigned closures are matched anywhere with comments about the same thing happening under Democrat not-really-assigned closures? Does that not make you wonder?

If you mean by defending conservatives, you allow some to stand, I would say that is true. But that you even equate some of the nasty hateful posts as being defined as conservative shows that you do believe that is the definition.

Just eliminating some of the stuff grossly unfair to conservatives would be nice but, if that is perceived to be reality, it will be what is reported.

      • How that works. A furloughed employee is told they must get the agency’s approval to work another job. That’s SOP. It’s the meaning of the ‘ethical considerations’ you mentioned. That takes about 6 weeks to get. And in many agencies, applies to outside volunteer work too. And to cap it off, the department arranging approval is mostly to be on furlough. Too bad, do sad.

Volunteering at your agency job is not permitted either because they can not pay you and cannot protect you from liability. And most important, the agency is not protected either.

They are also told they must be near a phone to receive communication from the agency to report back to work immediately. Otherwise you would be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination.

So, if an employee already has approval and can find someone willing to hire them understanding there is no commitment, they can work. Imagine how often that happens.

      • page 6

Those who won’t get their regular paychecks will have to survive on savings until their retro check arrives when they’re open again. Community outreach will be a must for many.

        • But they can work for others and they can volunteer. Don’t get me wrong. I think a government shutdown is terrible for many reasons. But you said, “Furloughed means they can’t work for others, can’t volunteer.” And as far as I can tell that is inaccurate.

          • They can work if they can manage to jump through all the hoops and requirements and get permission to. but like mention before, the agency that gives permission will mostly be out as well. the the process for receiving permission takes weeks how long do you think the shutdown is going to last. so in essence no they can’t work.

          • And, surprise surprise, volunteering has to meet similar criteria. It’s just not so simple.

  • whokilledourdaddy

i don’t remember a time when our government was shut down to fix the broken Foster Care system that 400,000+ American children of all colors were Born into. They are stuck in a system that all people involved in/with agree is a broken system, through no fault of Their own. Fix that 1st. in 2015 H.R.2434 was co-sponsored by 50+ republicans and democrats to help foster families Adopt. it went no where for no apparent reason. just imagine how many career C.W.S. workers would lose their jobs if This issue could be addressed and fixed…and how many foster kids would have life long families instead of being passed around until they age out of the system and then start having kids. round and round it goes.

  • Huffman is doing his best to be the winner of the 2018 fake news awards. Schumer is his strongest competition so far. Give it up.
CNN won most of the awards for 2017. https://gop.com/the-highly-anticipated-2017-fake-news-awards/

  • Video of OMB:
Dems do not oppose anything in the Bill, but they oppose the Bill itself. (for taking it off the table).

  • Word. Democratic party is in a sad state. Wanna see fake politician? Watch video of Chuck Schumer stinking up the Senate floor. Trump is seeking responsible immigration, tax cuts for working Americans, less dependence on foreign oil just to name a few. Dens cowardly try to smear him. Fake news, fake politicians is the Democratic Party

  • There could have at least less childish Congress if the public was less willing to cheer on stupid remarks full of drops of poison like Huffman’s statement above. It’s not necessary to disagree or agree to demand civility in words and actions.

Even without a hope of that, it is nice to see numbers of comments on a story not about pot.

  • Sarah Sanders twitter has interesting posts concerning the shutdown.
The troops in Afghanistan can’t communicate home, so hang in there families and other loved ones.
A press release refusing to give in to the demands of the hostage takers.
    and more.

  • This clown gives us a sly smile as he lies expecting everyone to be clueless sheep believing the endless lies ! The Democrats are so dedicated to their out of control party divide, disrupt & hate agenda they ignore the fate of the American people. How can these people keep spewing their propaganda that its everyone’s fault but theirs?

The Democrat thugs make it very clear illegal aliens are their #1 priority & American citizens are nothing worth worrying about. They fixed their primary to make sure Hillary was on the ballot, hired thugs to disrupt Trump events, weaponized the FBI & intelligence agencies to spy on opponents, encourage voter fraud & fill the media with their propaganda.

Why do people elect mindless party drones that are afraid to go against the party line & represent ALL Americans ? Why didn’t the Democrats have a plan for tax cuts? Their agenda & priorities are scary! Forcing people to buy their crap medical insurance was a insult! I’ve never imagined I would be required to buy insurance that is overpriced & near useless with the extremely high deductibles.

Where is the Democrat party of the Kennedy era?

    • Where do you get your news? Serious question

      • No it’s not. You’re sniping. A large section of the population was damaged by Obamacare in order to help others. It could have been avoided if the Democrats were willing to do the hard work of negotiating. But they saw their opportunity to pass just what they wanted and frog marched it through. They can’t weasel out of their responsibility now.

The Republicans share in the responsibility as does the press but that does not excuse what the Democrats did.

  • Cabin in the woods

  • amimissingsomething

    Huffman should resign….

  • Why is someone from Marin representing Mendocino?

  • Woohoo! Shut it down. Now the federal government is the size it should be.

  • I don’t have a degree in Economics, so could someone please explain to me how a government shut down cost America money? Taxpayers pay taxes, the government takes the money gives it to federal employees and takes taxes back? That’s not actually generating revenue although I guess it’s a way for the government to get more because every time a dollar moves they get to take their cut? Shouldn’t the government not spending our money create a surplus? Sooo, keep the shut down going to solve our debt problem?

    • Propaganda. Obama spent more money during the shutdown because he sent armed forces to ensure the closure of National Parks…

    • They have always paid missing salaries, whether the person worked or not. And people who worked sometimes get exta time off to make up for those who did not work yet got paid. They also paid delayed contractual obligations, even with penalties over the delay. The work stacks up when people are gone so overtime is created to catch up. The decision making about who stays and who goes is expensive. Then the bookkeeping to straighten out the mess…

It’s more expensive to shut down than to work. Now isn’t that a kick in the pants.

  • But did you march?

  • It’s funny that the conservative part of your readers really gravitate towards this article to contribute their comments. Very few supporters of Huffman. I wonder why the anti-Huffman crowd is so noisy… I think he’s a smart, informed guy looking out for his constituents, and he received something like 70% of the vote. Huffman and the democrats are simply looking out for their constituents (Hispanic voters) and they are learning how to play hardball (finally) with the wrong-headed, sycophantic majority of republicans in Congress.

    • Many groups, like for instance the group Latino’s for Trump, might disagree with you.

      • Thats gotta be a yuge group! Ha ha ha.

      • Their are quite a few Latinos for trump, it’s surprising. There is a strong conservative streak in Mexico due to the influence of Catholicism and also strong family values. I’ve also noticed an attitude of ‘shut the door to other immigrants behind me’ .
Also the machismo culture which trump def appeals to.
        Whatever the reason, it’s bizarre.

        • They want a screened door, just like most American’s do. Screen doors keep the felonious mosquitoes out.

          • So let’s see why we need this wall… there must be an assumption that the people on the other side are undesirable. Do we need a wall with with Canada? No. Why not? Because they are mostly rich white people? Yes that would appear to be the reason. Terrorists could just as easily come over from Canada as Mexico.
Yes, Mexico is a poor Country. Explain to me why they are different from earlier immigrants to the US from countries like Ireland, Italy, or Russia, who came here to get away from poverty and build a life here? That’s how my ancestors got here long ago. Don’t say because they came here legally; there were no immigration laws prior to around the end of the civil war. https://www.uscis.gov/history-and-genealogy/our-history/agency-history/early-american-immigration-policies

In my opinion, this country shouldn’t be building walls. We should be working to help Mexico come out of its morass and become a strong neighbor, that would seem like a better solution. Trump seems to want to break it down more, and build a wall to keep people separate. It’s unamerican to me and lots of other people. I’m not trying to convince you and your type… I think we will have to agree to disagree.
Conservatives (backwards thinkers) have always been against society moving forward, and they always slowly lose that fight. See: civil rights, gay rights, and soon enough this fight too. You are on the wrong side.

            • You seem to be confusing all immigrants with all felons. They’re two different issues altogether.

            • Imagine that. Conservatives don’t like going full speed over cliffs as do liberals.

Actually most conservatives would not object to liberals driving over cliffs they didn’t see if it wasn’t an intrinsic part of being a liberal was that they prefer to use government authority to make sure everyone goes over with them.

            • Emily:
Please tell me what your fellow Americans the property owners on the borders said when you talked to them if you haven’t why not. Why do you firmly stand against your fellow American’s? I lived on the border and know first hand. Trying to convince us and our type. The illegal immigrants cost Billions of dollars what about the American children and Vet it’s UnAmerican to put anyone else first. You’re happy with all the illegals invading the African American communities bringing there street gangs and turf wars, this is ok with you. The Latino community who came here legally are also against the illegal immigration they followed the laws why shouldn’t everyone else. My foster brothers family came here legally, followed all the Laws to do so. Why he’s a foster brother our family assisted them with open arm’s when they were in need!!
You say (I’ve also noticed an attitude of ‘shut the door to other immigrants behind me) Ya when they do it illegally nothing bizarre about it. To drive a car you need a legal drivers license to do so, your attitude is who cares, all the same thing!!

        • I don’t know. To me it’s bizarre that the same people complaining about low wages and high housing costs also adamantly support unregulated immigration that both drives wages down and raises housing costs. Yet they firmly adhere to these conflicting ideas.

    • What’s funnier, Emily, is how some people think that battle cries of hate, blame, and division across the platform is what the constituents want.

      • It’s pretty funny to hear the republicans talk about this govt shutdown.. they can’t get a single sentence out without trying to fit the words ‘Schumer shutdown’ or democratic shutdown in … like if they say it enough it’s true. Sad thing is people like you are buying their load of shit!

        Enjoy the rainy day !!

        • Goodnight Emily

        • That’s what it is. That’s who’s responsible. Should they call it Sander’s shutdown instead? This is where I roll my eyes and say have a nice day.

          • Hmmm….you’d think if it was true they wouldn’t have to say it, in every single sentence and tweet. That was my point. “Doth protest too much”
( and for good reason, looks like a majority of people are blaming the Republicans, as they should)

            • And there is just one of the many reasons that insults should not replace dialog. Beating the Trump insult drum seems to be the self destructive behavior de jour for the press and their followers. Lay down with dogs, get up with fleas.

              • if You are going to reply to my comment, try to address the issue I brought up. Your reply is a complete non sequitur. Just like the reply you made to my comment above.
Shay and guest, answer this: if it’s not about race, why not build a wall on our northern border? Felons and terrorists are just as likely (or more so?) to come in from up there.
Here’s on from your boys at fox:

                • But the Canadians have been willing to participate in trying to stop it. On the other hand, Mexico has not only refused to cooperate but has encouraged their citizens to ignore American laws.

Do you seen rallies of massed Canadians demanding we accommodate their illegal status or have you heard of Canadian cartels or when was the last time you saw the constant government involved mass muder in Canada or Canadians calling us rascist over attempts to enforce the law?

To call wanting to restrict illegal immigration at the point it is happening is to attempt to use cries of racism as a tool to force Americans to ignore reality. And of course there are those Americans who profit by this. Disingenuous and self serving and damaging to other Americans.

    • Hispanic voters do well under conservative ideas about free enterprise. And would more naturally align with them unless they want unlimited and unrestricted immigration. You need to come up with your own thoughts as to why unrestricted immigration suit them better than the free enterprise values they so commonly display.

      Cui bono.

    • The Russians consider it asymmetrical warfare.

  • A bit of good news to military loved ones. The DOD announced that the AFN is now up in most places. https://twitter.com/PressSec/status/955068036641361920

  • Omnibus bills are well loved by the Dems, until the Repubs give them a taste of their own medicine.
Maybe now, after all these years, the ominbus bills will be addressed and banned.
Vote for one bill at a time or don’t vote at all.

Everything in the omnibus budget bill was liked by all, but the Dems refused to fund the screen door/wall, so they decided to destroy the DACA and the CHIPS in order to stand their quicksand.

    • Despite all the hostility against Trump, I think he wants to fund both CHIPS and create a legal version of DACA. Although he has a few red lines, he mostly thinks of victory in terms of achieving a good deal, not in ideological adherence.

What has been really surprising to me is that he intends to try to keep his promises.

I agree about what Omnibus bills have come to. A way of avoiding responsibility by individual Congressmen for their pork.

      • Correct. He wanted it to pass so they could immediately move forward and begin discussing the permanent fix.

This will never change until they ban the use of omnibus bills. They are not supposed to be voting on any bill that is repugnant to their delegated duties, which means, that passing a bill to see what’s in it is just as repugnant as an omnibus bill.

  • Wow.
It seems Russian troll farms have taken a real interest in backwater blogs like this and LoCo.
I guess you should be flattered right?
Too bad the Trump administration is doing nothing about it.

  • Maybe the Mexicans should build the wall to keep all these stupid asses out

  • The press briefings cover the Q&A’s we’re all trying decipher. This one covers the voting that someone keeps bringing up and Guest keeps trying to educate.

This one mostly covers the politics going on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8RraAbyrCI

Firefighters and military will not get paid, but still have to work.

  • Schumer agreed to end the shutdown … while still calling it Trump’s shutdown.

  • 1-22-18 press briefing. Goal is getting back to work to create a permanent immigration reform bill, etc.

  • Reading many of these comments is disheartening. It’s like people are grouped on either side of a deep chasm, and they’re all howling at their own moon. There’s very little attempt to actually communicate, much less persuade anyone on the other side of the chasm. In this case the chasm is immigration. The purpose of the howling seems to be to confirm what side you’re on. Anti or pro? It’s not that simple, folks.

I read the long essay by a woman who had been in the Peace Corps in Africa and was disgusted by how much literal human shit she saw. Well, at least she was making some specific observations. I would agree that yes, that sounds gross. Many countries have poor sanitation. London used to be full of shit too, but that was over two hundred years ago. Functioning governments have much to do with providing running water and other facilities. Many poor societies still have low access to medical knowledge about disease.

The Peace Corps woman ended by saying that she didn’t regret her year in Africa, but she didn’t want her country to become Africa. It strikes me as a little Freudian that she thinks it could. She obviously wanted to stir up disgust, but is disgust about some Africans’ lack of toilets really going to further a rational discussion about immigration?

Hey, it’s kind of complicated. Anti or pro just doesn’t cut it. We’re going to have to learn to discuss issues. You know, actually try to communicate with each other.

    • When combined with the SF Defecation map posted above that essay, and the multitudes of video’s of people pooping in hallways, malls, fountains, swimming pools, sidewalks, stairs… etc, all across the globe, even in the USA and Canada, the essay speaks for itself.

      • In addition:
When customs differ to such a degree, it has to be addressed.
The universal restroom sign took forever to create, but once up, it became almost universally recognized. Countries with areas that are without public restrooms, wouldn’t recognize such a sign, of course, unless there was a universal sign with a symbol for no pooping in public, please use public restroom. We don’t see those do we. What do we see instead? Instead, we see complicated signs with symbols that wouldn’t make sense unless politics was followed closely.
A lot of people detest a “wall”. I’m one of them. But I do push for a screen door. This screen door aka wall, filters out the a percentage of the dangerous, but it also provides stations for educating those who have never seen a universal sign or learned about the customs of the country being entered.
It’s not fair to any person, whether a visitor, a citizen, or a homeless addict, to not have easy access to a restroom.
There needs to be an awakening of practices, and a deafening of politics.
