Run, Serve, Lead!–an Introduction to Civic Engagement
Press release from the North Coast People’s Alliance:
Learn how to boost your civic engagement, plan campaigns or run for office—
A popular forum that has coached scores of potential candidates and campaign volunteers is coming to Fortuna, complete with a new Spanish-language translation and a special one-on-one resources session.Ferndale, Fortuna, Loleta, Rio Dell, Scotia and surrounding communities will be the focus of the North Coast People’s Alliance’s latest “Run, Serve, Lead! – an Introduction to Civic Engagement.”
The free NCPA forum, scheduled for 1-3:30 p.m. on Feb. 4 at the MultiGenerational Center, 2280 Newburg Road, Fortuna, is being co-sponsored by Fortuna Indivisible, Indivisible Ferndale, Centro del Pueblo and the Ferndale Enterprise.
“We are so excited to be providing simultaneous, Spanish-language translation for our third ‘Run, Serve, Lead,’ forum,” said Carrie Peyton-Dahlberg, vice chair of NCPA’s Steering Committee.
The forum is geared to everyday people who are considering running for office, applying to serve on an appointed board or commission, volunteering for a local campaign, or simply becoming a more actively engaged community member.
Panelists will include Clif Clendenen, former 2nd District Humboldt County Supervisor; Patrick O’Rourke, a Ferndale City Council member; Renee Saucedo, an immigrant rights activist and former candidate for San Francisco Supervisor, and Danny Kelley, a newly elected member of the College of the Redwoods Board, whose candidacy was endorsed by Fortuna Indivisible, Ferndale Indivisible and the NCPA. Sofia Pereira, Arcata’s mayor and community manager for the national organization “She Should Run,” will speak about preparing to run for office.
During informal mingling after the audience Q&A, NCPA volunteers will staff two resource tables, one for voter registration and one to help people determine what local offices they might qualify to run for, based on their voting address. Light refreshments will be served.
“Run, Serve, Lead!” is free to the public. Donations are encouraged to help defray costs.
The North Coast People’s Alliance produced two “Run, Serve, Lead” forums in 2017, attended by nearly 150 people in Arcata and McKinleyville. NCPA evolved from Northern Humboldt for Bernie Sanders. After the 2016 primary, its members worked together to build NCPA, a multi-partisan organization that empowers ordinary people to become more engaged in political processes.

How many times are you going to run this story?
My error. I had sent it to Oliver who helps me by posting. Didn’t see it posted so I thought I hadn’t sent it to him and scheduled it to come out today. It wasn’t until your comment and going back and looking for an issue that I realized my error.
Cool!
Can Bernie supporters get one of those nifty, “I Surrender!” stickers for their Subaru’s and Toyota trucks?
I encourage folks to run for office, but they need “thick skin” to be sure, because even your friends will turn against you at some point in your political career, even in non partisan situations, it’s the nature of the beast.
Been there. Served my community 6.5 years. Done that. Finished. No regrets.
