Remembering the Homeless Who Died This Year
On this the longest night of every year, communities across the nation gather to remember the homeless among them who have died. Today is Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day and there will be two gatherings in Humboldt County. One, starting at 2 p.m., will meet at the Eureka Gazebo. There will be “food, music, candles, an opportunity to share your thoughts and memories about the friends and neighbors we have lost,” according to the Humboldt State University Homeless Student Advocate Alliance.
A second will meet in Garberville under the clock in the center of town at 4 p.m. Both will accept donations of food and warm clothing.
Below is a list of some of the homeless who died this year in Humboldt. The list does not attempt to be comprehensive. It is simply one homeless advocate’s recounting. We’ve included photos if we had them.

Thank you for acknowledging these folks 😊 RIP
God Bless these poor people. It is so, so cold outside.
December 2016 Austin Cade Brown
Beloved son, brother
All of these people had a mother who loved them.
Peace to all.
Many did not have a mother that loved them and many had abusive parents – painful to keep in mind and important to acknowledge.
Why? Would it not be better to teach them that they have a surprising amount of self determination possible no matter what?
We are one of the wealthiest countries in the world. This is heartbreaking.
I want to wish all of the families peace in their hearts. I am Austin Browns mother and his memorial service is January 7th. He was found Dec. 26 2016 and stayed unidentified at the Coroners office 10 months despite being a missing person. I know this is so hard however some peace can be found. My love to you all.
Okie, I’m so sorry for your loss! What a nightmare our coroners office is. They are known to close and cremate before the facts are all in. Did your son die on the streets in humboldt county? If so would it be ok to put his name on our list? We have been keeping a list of folks we know that have died on our streets in humboldt county for 11 years. We have 83 people on that list. We honor those folks every year! I will put Jbird on it too Hans!
Debra, yes Austin was found here in Humboldt. https://kymkemp.com/2017/11/30/missing-man-identified-as-body-found-last-december/
