North Coast People’s Alliance Opens Endorsement Period

This is a press release from the North Coast People’s Alliance:

The North Coast People’s Alliance, the powerhouse, multi-partisan group that is building grassroots electoral power and supporting candidates and ballot issues that serve the interests of the people, has opened its endorsement period for June 2018 elected offices.

Candidates who support economic justice, social justice and environmental justice are encouraged to read NCPA’s 2018 endorsement process, fill out the endorsement application and save the date for 10 a.m. Jan. 20, the first opportunity for candidates to answer questions from NCPA members.

After backing three winning candidates and two successful ballot initiatives in 2016 and 2017, NCPA plans to play a bigger role in 2018 elections, in part by encouraging progressive candidates to get started earlier.

“We know that with enough time — and enough volunteers walking door-to-door — everyday people can win elections against big money,” said Tamara McFarland, chair of the NCPA Steering Committee. “We want to make sure time is on the people’s side.”

Prospective candidates will be required to fill out an endorsement application, abide by NCPA’s “People Funded, Corporate Free” donation standards, and appear before an NCPA general meeting to answer questions. Full details are available online in the “civic engagement” section of NCPA’s website, northcoastpeoplesalliance.org.

The North Coast People’s Alliance has chosen to open its 2018 endorsement periods roughly six months before the June and November elections to provide more time for people-power to work its magic and triumph over big money in politics. For June 2018 elections, the endorsement period opened on Dec. 15, and for November 2018 elections, the endorsement period will open on May 6.

Local offices that could be contested in the June election include two of Humboldt County’s five county supervisors (4th and 5th districts) and three of its judges, as well as the county assessor, auditor-controller, clerk-recorder-registrar, district attorney, sheriff, superintendent of schools and treasurer-tax collector.

NCPA encourages candidates who share its values to get started early, and it offers training and informal mentoring to help those considering a run. The group’s popular “Run, Serve, Lead!” forum helps regular folks learn how to run for office, help manage a campaign, or become empowered to engage with civic processes at any level.

The next “Run, Serve, Lead” event will be held in Fortuna from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 4, at the Multi-Generational Center, with Fortuna Indivisible and Ferndale Indivisible among the co-sponsors. Two earlier “Run, Serve, Lead!” forums over the past year, in Arcata and McKinleyville, have offered tips and resources to more than 140 people, including some who are now preparing their 2018 campaigns.

In all its efforts, NCPA welcomes people from multiple political parties as well as those with no party preference, as long as they want work together around shared issues that transcend party labels.

The North Coast People’s Alliance evolved from Northern Humboldt for Bernie, a grassroots group that helped Bernie Sanders win a huge majority in the Humboldt County Democratic primary in June 2016.

The group then turned its focus to local elections, endorsing Measure V (mobile home rent control), Measure P (true wards in Eureka) and Austin Allison for Eureka City Council. All three won in November 2016. This year, NCPA endorsed Bonnie Deister and Dan Kelley for the College of the Redwoods Board of Trustees. Both candidates challenged long-term incumbents, and both won in November 2017.

‘The people’ need good jobs, independence, adequate numbers of doctors, safety both in town and out, repaired roads, education that leaves its graduates able to read and write well, etc. Why is it likely the goal of this organization not any of those things?

The goal of this organization is to get progressives in local public offices. Accomplishing that goal will result in single payer healthcare, to say the least. So, as someone who has gone to many NCPA events and meetings, I feel confident saying that NCPA does have those goals, and the way they feel most productive and confident going about accomplishing them is through getting progressives into local offices.

JUST LISTEN TO WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY, GIMMEE, FREE, NO CHARGE, NO TUITION, FREE DRUGS, FREE BOOZE, NO JAIL TERMS. BUT ONE SMALL CATCH, FREE JUST MEANS YOUR NEIGHBOR YOU KNOW THAT GUY OR GAL THAT CRAWLS OFF TO WORK EVERYDAY AN TRIES TO FEED HIS OR HER FAMILY ON MEAGER WAGES, WONDERING HOW TO BALANCE THE BUGET, DR. BILLS FOR SICK KIDS, CHILD CARE, SCHOOL CLOTHES, WHAT ABOUT THEM? OR IS IT THEY JUST DON’T COUNT, IN THE FREE SOCIETY?

From all those budgetary items you reference, I am curious if you support that we spend nearly half our national resources (taxes; from today and from future generations) to support all the wars we are involved in overseas? You think that is a good use of our tax dollars???

Only if it keeps war arriving here. But then you imply there is a real choice when there isn’t. Only those secure that nothing could touch them could be so simplistic in their universal condemnation. I suppose you would have opposed entry into WWII on the premise of it being an immoral use of resources?

But then I think you are wrong about that figure anyway. Just about 40% of our disposable budgeted income goes for military purposes. That’s the income left over after spending for lots of mandated costs like social security, medicare and medicaid, interest on the national debt, etc. We spend far more on those things than military.

Maybe you ought to look at that budget again. All those things you reference pale as compared to what the military gets!! Look at the budget, it’s online and not the fake news of Faux and Breitbart.

I agree with the other posters who oppose their tactics. They are better suited to raising awareness than to taking office.
Isn’t their name considered false advertising? They do not represent all individuals, which can only lead us to assume they do not consider those who oppose their tactics as “people”.
Their love of “forcing” others to bow to their ideals, confirms our assumptions.

The only way to be free from any oppression, is to keep our eyes on the Constitution and vote constitutionally. Unfortunately, people have been so brainwashed, they have no clue what that means. Here’s a few hints:
The Constitution is not government. The Constitution LIMITS government. All office holders take an oath to obey the Constitution which LIMITS government and literally forbids them from dictating your life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

Don’t be fooled. Learn from the “Parties” who owned and oppressed us into the mess we are now in. This last step was their goal all along. To get us, the now impoverished, to turn to them out of utter desperation.
Breaking the chains that bind us to poverty and oppression takes an awoken people, not a gullible people.

Just my 2 cents. (which is about all I have left).

As a Vet you should know that there is a raise in the works. This raise is doable thanks to the cutting back of many redundant regulatory “jobs” that was stealing from YOU.

BTW, as a Vet, you should also be aware that the President is not the Constitution, that the Constitution is not Government, and that Parties are power trippers. You did take an oath to protect and defend it, yet you fail to read it?

editing to include parties, have to post to sign back in to edit or do an addendum.

Party’s are not government. Parties are owned by private corporations who hype the candidates they know will continue their power grabs.

The Founders of the Constitution warned us against Parties. They are vampires who seek to drain you of all your power, through deception. The power to control you.

The Constitution was created so that YOU can control YOU without governmental interference.
The Government was created to SECURE your rights and power to self govern.
The Federal Government was created for dealing with foreign matters, such as negotiations with other countries, commerce with foreign countries, peace with other countries. EXTERNAL MATTERS.

The Local, County, and State governments are to first SECURE the rights of the individual who is the smallest minority of all.
They are in control of all the INTERNAL MATTERS such as roads, not shoelaces. Shoelaces are up to the PEOPLE.

Whatever POWERS are not given to the Central govt are reserved to the States.
PEOPLE have RIGHTS, State’s have POWERS. Learn the difference! Ask yourselves why is this relevant? What is the difference between a Power and a Right. KNOW the difference. Keep the two separate.

Wow. It’s amazing that so many people want to down talk an organization who’s purpose is to promote candidates that represent a big part of our community opinion.
Something wrong with democracy y’all?
The right has had their Tea Party, the Alt Right and Neo-Nazi’s, plus, on a local level, the Rob Arkley machine.
If we (especially you commentators) believe in a free, open and pluralistic democracy, then encourage them, as I do to Dale Mensing, our local (Redway grocery checker) Libertarian Congressional candidate, ‘Good for you Dale! Happy that you, as a local man and citizen are running for office, like our founders imagined! Carry on!’ Many of Dale’s positions are opposite from mine, yet I deeply appreciate a nice, committed, local man stepping forward, at an entry level, into our political process. It’s the purest form democracy! Same with NCPA. I THANK THEM for encouraging and supporting our homegrown political process!!

Individuals despise mob rule democracy.
We are a republic, a Constitutional Republic, where the INDIVIDUAL is the smallest minority of all.
Democracy’s are AGAINST the smallest minorities of all.
Shame and blame all you want… it just makes the point more acute.

Glad you can admit you are ”assuming’.
No. Dale is not a token. He is simply the only ‘regular person’ I know, who is part of a community I am familiar with, who is running for state office.
Do you know any/many of those who fit that category?
Dale gave me an opportunity to experience my boundaries of ‘who is good or bad’ by their politics, just by knowing him. Am grateful for that!

Quote from article: “Candidates who support economic justice, social justice and environmental justice are encouraged to read NCPA’s 2018 endorsement process, fill out the endorsement application and save the date for 10 a.m. Jan. 20, the first opportunity for candidates to answer questions from NCPA members.”

Quote from Ben: “No. Dale is not a token. He is simply the only ‘regular person’ I know, …..”

This leaves the assumption that either the group doesn’t hold to it’s word about what they represent. (re quote 1). Or it leaves the assumption that Dale is all aboard with the group’s stance.

This is not unlike what the other Parties are notorious for doing.
Either your party is staunch or is not. Either the candidate is staunch or is not.
Which is it?
If it doesn’t matter, then why even have quote 1?

Nonsense. It’s perfectly reasonable to point out the foolishness of unrealistic pretenions. Democracy is not all about you. Thinking that is pretentious too.

Somehow I can’t believe a bunch of Bernie supporters can tranform themselves into supporters of libertarians no matter how local they are. The tendency has been for liberals to shout insults at anyone departing from the party line by even a millimeter, which any true libertarian is bound to do. Libertarian is not just a meaningless check block on a form.

So, you assume that ‘Bernie supporters are supporters of a libertarian’? Do you get that idea from just my support of a Libertarian man running for office? As I said, I don’t agree with Dale on many things. And yet, I can still ‘support’ that he runs, that he fulfills the higher aspirations of our civic process, while not voting for him (which is accurate in this case).
Sorry you have latched on to such a narrow view of such a numerous part of political community. Maybe you should meet some Bernie supporters, ‘break bread’ with them. And whether you discover any common ground, you might find that they are just passionate citizens, like you may be.

That makes no sense whatsoever. I assume that Bernie supporters are not likely ever going to be supporters of a libertarian. So exactly how do you ‘support’ Dale if you can’t bring yourself to vote for him? How if your goal is to see he doesn’t get elected? How if you can’t agree with him? Invite him to speak so you can abuse him in public?

Sheesh everyone is local on some level. That is a meaningless designation. And one that is not at all a criteria your group is likely to ever advance as meaningful unless accompanied by non libertarian Bernie beliefs.

And I have no doubt Bernie supporters are passionate. Lots and lots of passion. Lots. Endless passion like the guy up the road who laminated his Bernie for President sign keeps it up to this day. Has no earthly use except to rub his views in everyone’s face. But is certainly a passionate action.

Your equally laminated passion for Bernie is clear from the words at the bottom of the logo.

So, when I ‘support’ a Tea Party member or a Nazi’s right to speak their opinion, you then suppose that I ascribe (agree with or even condone) their point of view? If so, that is truly very narrow thinking about how a tolerant society can be. And THAT is exactly why we have such an antagonistic culture.
Be part of that negativity if you want. I chose to be accepting and ‘supportive’ of people who express points of view that do not include mine.

Again, you are not claiming to support free speech for all. You are claiming to be”supporting candidates and ballot issues that serve the interests of the people, has opened its endorsement period for June 2018 elected offices.” Yet you also claim that you won’t be supporting those with whom you differ. What’s the point?

Again exactly what support are you going to offer a libertarian? That is not a negative question. That’s reality.

It’s not hard to see the difference. In other words, you are certainly not going to put your money where your mouth is. And without that, it’s all mouth.

What have I done (to ‘support’ Dale)? I have told him (and others) that I think it’s great he is running for office, exercising the opportunities our system offers. I have also told Dale that I don’t agree with him on a number of issues. He understands that and appreciates my ‘support’, which is intended to jump the normal gap between people of different opinions, and offer him encouragement to continue his effort.
Seems you (Guest) and I have different views of the word ‘support’. In my opinion, there are many ways to ‘support’ someone without giving them money.
Also. The quote you offer in your reply is not written by me. Maybe it’s from the article.
And how you conclude that I am ‘not supporting free speech for all’, when I offer mine, engage about yours, and ‘support’ that of a nazi, is baffling. Can you clarify?
I will begin traveling tomorrow for a long trip. Will try to get back to your latest reply, if /when I can.
Happy Holidays to you, Guest!

Progressives? No thank you. Many of the people drawn to the progressive banner are good folks deceived by the great sounding rhetoric.

Unfortunately, the movement itself is dominated by hard core extremists who are among the most anti-freedom, self-righteous bullies around. They are oppressive thugs, just like all true believers, no matter the political stripe.

These folks are a bunch of vile hypocrites pushing a utopian ponzi scheme. As soon as they consolidate their power they’ll turn into authoritarian oppressors and the first people they’ll turn on are the moderates in their own movement, purging the ones who aren’t radical enough. This is what happens with every movement dominated by utopian dogma, when it finally gets in power it turns into the very thing it claims to have been fighting against.

Don’t say you weren’t warned.
