Snow in the Mountains; Chains Required on 36
If you are planning on traveling into the mountains today, be prepared for snow. Hwy 299 is covered at several points. (Road conditions shown in photo above. Image taken at 7:33 a.m.)
Caltrans QuickMap shows chains required on Hwy 36 from Mad River to Forest Glen area.
On the other hand, there was a rainbow this morning on Hwy 101 just south of the 299 interchange.

Are chains “required” or is 4wd with snow tires ok?
Here’s what Caltrans says, “Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. (Four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas).”
Thanks😁
Maybe, check the Cal Trans site for further info???!!! Or click on the current conditions link I’m sure there would be further info there as well!!!
I’m glad I don’t have to go “Up the Hill” today!!! I do NOT have chains for the Beast I drive!!! ;-\
Better to just stay home than risk it even with chains. But a Beast with chains can probably go through just about anything except deep snow where only snowmobiles can venture. I’m dreaming of a white Xmas.
Its hard to say if you even need chains! Caltrans and CHP are pretty lame! They made me chain up for 20 miles on Buckhorn last year, Raining the whole time no snow on road. Drove on asphalt with chains! CHP even followed me to make sure I didnt take them off. I was livid. Soon as he was out of sight I pulled over ripped them off! There were people drove all the way to bottom of Buckhorn before taking them off. Better have em to be safe though.
I can just about climb trees with chains on my Toyota Tacoma fwd.
Somewhere there’s a one woman wrecking ball suffering a norovirus condition with a missing Spanish man on snowbound Hwy 36 without chains discussing a high profile Manila murder case…
Ha love it as all avid readers must
