Tiny School’s Coach Receives Coveted Volleyball Award

Press release from Southern Trinity Unified School District:

coach Clint MaybeeTalk about someone who makes the most out of so little! Southern Trinity’s coach Clint Maybee has been awarded the distinguished North Coast Section Honor Coach of the Year Award in Volleyball. Clint is the girls volleyball coach at one of the tiniest schools in the North Coast Section. With an enrollment of less than three dozen, he has led his Warriors to undefeated consecutive league championships from 2003-06 as his second stint as coach. He also successfully coached basketball and volleyball for Southern Trinity’s small elementary school throughout the 90’s, taking his teams to out of state tournaments. He stopped coaching after the 2006 season but fortunately returned in 2014. “He has this uncanny ability to get a handful of girls with different lifestyles, social circles, and athletic ability to come together and become ONE as a team.” “When this happens, it’s magic to watch.” said Southern Trinity’s AD.

Southern Trinity High School is in the CIF Humboldt-Del Norte League and their teams compete with all the local big and small high schools on the coast. League commissioner Jack Lakin commented that “To be awarded the NCS Honor Coach of the year is a big deal for our area. This is the first time a coach from our league has ever received this in the sport of volleyball. Coach Maybee was chosen for this award out of 164 schools in the North Coast Section, so this is quite an achievement for such a rural area. Congratulations, Clint!”

When asked about his coaching philosophy, Coach Maybee said “We focus on the whole player, helping each young woman become the best she can be. Teamwork is paramount. Teamwork means that we share a common idea and embrace a common goal. It can be summed up in five short words: ‘We believe in each other’”. Mr. Maybee graciously accepted the award at the NCS Section volleyball playoff at St. Bernard High School last week. He said “I am honored and humbled to receive the award, but it really must be shared with all my players and many others who helped me to succeed in my personal and professional life”. He is hoping to put a fine group of girls on the court ready to play next year. Go Warriors!

From someone who knows the amount of time, patience and love that goes into coaching a team, I commend Coach Clint Maybee for this recognition by North Coast Section. Representing a small school in a remote area means that his team must travel a lot. This, by itself, is worthy of an award. Kudos to Coach Maybee! 👍
