[UPDATE 5:14 p.m] Southern Humboldt Tech Rescue and Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at Scene Respond to Tooby Park
The canoe was determined to have been unoccupied. We’ll have information on how and where the owner can reclaim it as soon as it is available.
UPDATE 5:14 p.m.: According to Diana Totten, Public Information Officer for the Southern Humboldt County Technical Rescue Team,
Sometime during the night as the river came up a canoe drifted to the area above the bridge at Tooby Park…[A] 911 call was made to the sheriff who then went to the scene and, after seeing the canoe in the willow bushes, [was concerned as] it was not known if there was a body in or under the canoe…[T]he tech rescue team who was called to recover the canoe and look for any victims…[W]e didn’t see any sign of anyone in or around the canoe but if someone was thrown from the canoe and separated they could still be somewhere in the river.

How does one determine if an unoccupied canoe was previously occupied?
Good one bushy
I would imagine there would be some stuff in the canoe like a paddle or personal belongings.
Foot prints, scraped spots, butt prints, the usual stuff…
No needles, og,dubbie butts,beer cans,wic receipts,Russian visa(s). So anyone can claim this canoe-oh my canoe is red.Thanks.
maritime law allows you to claim it if it doesn’t have current tags and is just drifting about.
Could have saved a lot of time and inconvenience for the Sheriff and the rescue squad if the owner had done the responsible thing ahead of time and had their name and phone number on the canoe as well as their paddles.
Oh. That’s right. I will never lose my canoe or paddles. I always know where they are. And iIdon’t need no stinking life jacket. I can swim like a fish even in cold water.
Sometimes the first rains come and nice people forget that the river is going to come up and lose their toys. Looks like a Mad River Canoe there nice boats. If it was full of water when it was found it would, most likely, be closer to the shore line.
Where can i come pick it up? Its mine!
