Byrd Lochtie to Receive 2017 Nonprofit Leader Achievement Award from NorCAN

This is a press release from the Northern California Association of Nonprofits:

The Northern California Association of Nonprofits (NorCAN) has chosen Byrd Lochtie to receive the 2017 Nonprofit Leader Achievement Award. The award will be presented on Tuesday December 5 at Confluence, NorCAN’s biennial regional nonprofit leadership conference; the event takes place at the Sequoia Conference Center in Eureka from 8am-4pm.

Lochtie has worked as a consultant, trainer, coach, and mentor with hundreds of nonprofit leaders during the course of her career. She specializes in helping leaders to understand and be more effective in their roles, with a particular emphasis on working together to set organizational vision and strategy to advance their missions. Byrd has been a key partner and trainer for NorCAN – fostering learning, mentoring, relationship building, and excellence in leadership through monthly Board Leadership Roundtables and Introduction to Board Service workshops for many years.

“Byrd Lochtie is a tireless champion for community democracy and we are excited to publicly recognize her decades of service to the region,” said Amy Jester, NorCAN Program Director.

Lochtie has served in leadership positions in a variety of local organizations, including the League of Women Voters of Humboldt County, Children’s Authors Festival, the Humboldt County Human Rights Commission, United Way, Girl Scouts, Eureka City Schools Board of Trustees, and many more.

I always appreciate people who genuinely and humbly make things better for their community. And those who do it selflessly.

One of the things Byrd has done, among many things, is having the League of Women Voters inform and educate us in various public forums of local politics and the politicians running for office. This may not sound like a big deal, but it really is, especially in a representative democracy. We get an opportunity to see closely who is representing us. If not for the LWV doing performing this essential function, who would? Remember, they do it out of the love for service and community. Byrd and others volunteer their time; no one gets paid a dime.

Congratulations, Byrd. This is well-deserved.
Carry on!

Byrd was my daughter’s Brownie leader almost 30 years ago. This woman has donated more time and energy to making this community a better place to live. I can’t think of a more deserving woman to receive the 2017 Nonprofit Leader Achievement Award. My daughters both remember her fondly. She instilled great values and I am so glad that she and Cricket were their leaders.

Congrats Byrd! I’m lucky enough to know her personally, and she’s a lovely lady. They don’t even cover her expert fudge making and calligraphy skills, as we see at Christmas each year. If everyone could donate a fraction of the time she has this area, what a difference we could make. Cheers, Byrd, and well deserved.
