Trinity County Is Getting A New County Administrative Officer

This is a press release from the Trinity County Administrative Office:

On October 26, 2017, the Trinity County Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 to hire Dr. Richard Kuhns as the new County Administrative Officer.  The position was vacated with the resignation of former County Administrative Officer Wendy Tyler, who left the county for other employment.

Dr. Kuhns has accepted the county’s offer, and will start employment on December 4, 2017.

Dr. Kuhns is currently serving as the Regional Housing Authority Director for the Shasta, Siskiyou, Trinity, Modoc Housing Authority and Executive Director of the Shasta County Community Action Agency. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from Brigham Young University, a master’s in behavioral science from CSU, Dominguez Hills, and attained his doctorate degree in psychology at California Southern University.

Trinity County began its search for a County Administrative officer in January 2016, when it solicited proposals for professional recruitment services. It has received 57 applications, 23 of which were forward to the Board of Supervisors for consideration. The Board interviewed 12 applicants, before unanimously directing County Counsel Margaret Long to negotiate an agreement with Dr. Kuhns.

“Dr. Kuhns comes to the County with many years of public service, an incredible knowledge base and excitement to make Trinity County a better place,” Long said.  She also noted, that he has received praise and support from his peers who were contacted.

The County Administrative Officer is responsible for annual budget preparation and oversight of all county departments. The County Administrative Officer is also the direct department head for several departments including General Services, Solid Waste, Libraries, Information Technology, Grants, General Administration and Clerk of the Board.

Did it really take them from January 2016 to find a replacement? Even from January of 2017 seems like a long time.

They have made some serious mistakes in choosing CAO’s in the past so hopefully taking their time means they chose wisely.

Previous CAOs were picked by the supervisors. I believe Wendy did a good job. Dero was chosen as he already worked for the County. He retired. The Grand Jury report indicated too much time had gone by for there not to be a CAO in place. Funny how so shortly after GJ report they hired one. This last GJ report was very enlightening.
