This is a press release from the Southern Humboldt Unified School District:

Miranda, CA – After years of planning and over a year of construction South Fork High School is excited to announce the Grand Re-Opening of Hartley Gym on November 17, 2017 at 1 pm. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will feature dedications of the Lobby of the Gymnasium as “The Wood Family Lobby” and of the Court as “The Clint Bainbridge Court” before the first game of the SFHS Cub’s Basketball Season.

The gym features a new weight room, a wrestling room, both boys and girls’ team rooms, a new lobby, a snack shack featuring a dining area with windows, and an all-weather outdoor seating area for the Miranda Jr. High Campus. The Music Room was also renovated and all walkways were brought up to ADA compliance. Students of the Miranda Junior High and of South Fork High School will join Community Members and the Board of Trustees in celebrating the success of the Modernization Project for our School District and as a showcase for our community.

I understand that, but without Clint Bainbridge, who coached many of the best basketball players in South Fork History, we probably wouldn’t be bringing up Gene’s name here. He was a mentor to many South Fork players, including Gene, taking the boys to numerous summer basketball camps and leagues. Many of the lessons learned from “Bain” are what Gene used when coaching his own teams and directing his Basketball Jones Hoop Camps. Naming the South Fork court after Clint Bainbridge is both fitting and long overdue. And Gene would have absolutely loved being there for it. Congrats on the new gym and for honoring a man who definitely deserves it. Go Cubs!

@SHCforlife There was some thought put into dedicating part of the gym to Gene. But The gym was already named after Harltey and was not appropriate to change. The court ended up going to Bainbridge because he taught and coached there for many, many, years and had championship teams, he even coached Gene Cotter. We will likely never have a coach like Bainbridge ever again. He touched many lives. However they are starting a new tradition of a large annual Highschool basketball tournament for boys and girls teams that will be named the Gene Cotter Memorial Tournament.

There’s more to the story. It’s an old feud. Gino is the legend. Legends should have courts and gyms named after them.

My brother was one of the best players in South Fork history, but there likely isn’t the Legend of Gene Cotter without Clint Bainbridge. He fostered a love of the game to me and my classmates, who started playing on the Redway Courts, and Gene joined in when he was in third grade. Those games developed his love for the game, but Coach Bainbridge’s coaching and encouragement took him to another level. Gene would definitely tell you that Bain, and not him, deserves to have the court named after him. Thanks for your support for Geno, he was a special soul and is sorely missed. One Love!

Yes, the Gene Cotter Memorial Tournament will be happening on December 8 and 9, 2017. The tournament is being named after Gene and will feature both a varsity boys and girls tournament. In addition South Fork will be retiring Gene’s #11 Jersey around 7pm on Dec. 8, before the South Fork vs. Laytonville game. There will also be a 3 on 3 tournament at South Fork on Sunday, December 10, hosted by the LiveLikeGeno Foundation, to help provide funds for Foundation projects like refurbishing the outdoor courts behind the gym at Redway School. Those courts, and not the South Fork gym are where Gene developed his love for the game and initially refined his skills. Anyone interested in signing up for the tournament can register at livelikegeno.org.

Geno would love it being named after one of his coaches, I’m sure Bain had a huge influence on on Gene or any of us that were lucky enough to call him coach,or just listened to his basketball philosophy. They both taught me so much about the game and I’m forever greatful! One love! Cub pride!

What a beautiful new facility! I’m really happy with the naming of the lobby and the court. I watched Larry & Tom Wood play at SF before I was in high school, and then I played for coach Bain in 1971, with Dennis Wood. I live in Redding, and had a great visit with Bain and his lovely wife before they moved from the Red Bluff area. I wish I could come over to attend the dedication.
