[ UPDATE 5:54 p.m. on Saturday] Three Native American Males Sought in Armed Robbery on Bald Hills Road

Breaking NewsJust before 4 p.m., a man in Arcata called law enforcement stating that he had been informed by one of his workers that his marijuana grow on Bald Hills Road was being robbed. According to scanner traffic, the man stated that he had “20-30 workers” on the farm.

Later, according to the dispatcher, the grower received word that the robbers were three Native American males wearing bulletproof vests and carrying firearms. The suspects reportedly stole two of the vehicles on the farm–a white GMC truck with a shell and a black Explorer. One of the vehicles was attached to a trailer which contained marijuana. The vehicles were last seen headed westbound on Bald Hills Road towards Orick.

Below is the officers’ safety BOLO that went out over the scanner.


UPDATE 5:54 p.m. on Saturday:
A new BOLO that went out described the incident in slightly more detail. The white pickup is a 2001 Chevrolet lifted with a Burning Man’s sticker and the black 1996 Ford Explorer with Washington plates. There was also a van. Note: this update had an earlier piece that we didn’t manage to catch on tape. The BOLO also indicates that there was only one Native American seen and he had tattoos.

Most farms have 20 people processing at times, that how the job gets done.

These ass holes have been performing these armed robberies for the last 4 years up there, and off Baird rd from hoopa to redwood valley. They have been caught on game cams, ballistic body armor and assault rifles. Not a group to mess with, they have nothing to lose. A group of neighbors with photo evidence was told by sheriff office there was nothing they could do, and instructed to take care of it themselves, no joke. They steal everything, product, tools, generators, quads, trucks, appliances.. Res life is rough, grows are easy targets..

Yes. Many large grows use this many people at harvest. Trim crews from Spain, Italy, picked up by the grocery store, etc. And these are the large grow scenes that have ruined the scene for the rest of us who just wanted to live here, not being part of an industrial grow area. These size greed grows have destroyed our area, pushed us into a terrible corporate-based “legalization” and changed our area for the worse- socially, economically (witness the crash) and culturally. That’s why I cheer them getting ripped off! I wish these REAL locals would go all through Willow Creek area and rip the profits from all grows of this size. Something the sheriff refused to do. That would be justice!

The sheriff doesn’t protect the locals anymore, won’t do anything about the grows in our neighborhoods but do go after someone who ripped off the growers. This seems backwards to me.
If the people going by my house are any example a lot of the growers and their employees have out of state plates. I think anyone applying for a grow permit needs a California driver’s license and they and their employees need to register their vehicles in California so they can pay the taxes like we do.

You’ll note that there is no description of the firearms that would suggest “assault rifle.” None. It’s funny how people take off on flights of fantasy and imagination based on little information, but plenty of baseline mindset. Full-auto, “assault” rifles are not generally legal for civilians without an FFL and maybe not at all, now. Not a lawyer. AR originally stood for Armalite Rifle. A typical semi-auto “black rifle” is simply a more ergonomic, modern design compared to, say, a Remington or Browning auto-loader hunting rifle from days of yore. Of course, I decry these criminal acts.

The weed industry still has a long way to go to equal the devasting watershed damage from decades of poorly regulated, liquidation logging, the last of which we suffered under the Hurwitz/Maxxam PL takeover. Employee benefits were ravaged along with the timberlands.

Sorry, old-timers, but that’s the way it was.

Bald Hills has always been hardcore. Benn going on since the first growers. In So. Hum. u have the hippy/yuppy growers. Up North you have cowboys & Indians. It is the real wild west. Many of my friends in that area have sold their farms. Several got over $1M. Some Chinese people have scooping up land out there. Everyone that has a ganja farm out Bald Hills or Wichipec knows you have to have security. Even before prop 215 the people I knew growing out there had armed guards during harvest season. If u are going to play cowboys & Indians u better have security & be heavily armed. No cops are going to rescue you & for the most part you are on your own. The growers up North aren’t as organized as down south. In So.Hum if u get robbed u can call your neighbors & many times the thieves get caught before they make it to the highway. There is no local network of growers in Bald Hills to call for help. The Natives know the land & roads better and have better organization than the growers. Look at this way. If you aren’t ready to have a shoot out to protect your weed you should move from Bald Hills area. Only hardcore gun totting growers will survive the attacks & raids by the Indians(just like 1800’s). That said the guns may help you keep your weed, but they won’t protect you from the marijuana market collapse.

The interesting thing is this is not new. This has literally been going on for Decades! No bullshit. I just remembered my friends in Bald Hills back in the 90’s had a very similar incident. This is likely a generational thing on the ranch. The old school grow thieves teaching their offspring the family profession. Just like u have people growing up as 2nd & 3rd generation growers you have 2nd & probably even 3rd generation marijuana thieves. It’s the wild wild wild west up here in northern Humboldt. Everyone trying to figure out how to survive. Unfortunately some grow up in thief families.

Am I correct that a marijuana grower isn`t allowed to have a firearm — even a permitted, legal grower? If a liquor store owner or a pharmacy owner can have a firearm, why is there some exception for marijuana growers? If I am correct in this, then this is more liberal California stupidity. A really good idea — hundreds of millions of dollars of high value material out in the hills and anyone of larcenous intent knows the owners are without defense. Really good idea, liberals.

My prediction is we`re going to see much more of this and of course there is going to be an occasional murder or several. More regulations, more taxes and Joe and Susie grower out in the hills are going to be long gone. Hopefully, they`ve been wise enough to pay off their property; get out of debt and have some assets. In 3 to 5 years, marijuana growing is going to be entirely in the hands of corporations and those wealthy enough to invest $5 million or so.

Eventually, the whole liberal program of high taxes, regulate everything, micromanage every aspect of life — and of course a huge dose of corruption thrown in — is going to end. The pendulum is going to swing back the other direction; likely it`s already started. I think it`s going to swing back a very long way and the liberals aren`t going to like it a bit. A lot of people aren`t going to like it No, they`re not going to like it at all…….

Kym, thanks for researching this. The question on the form to purchase a weapon states , “Are you an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana?”
It does not ask if you are a grower. Unlawful or lawful. So all you have to do to be in compliance is follow the old rule, Don’t do what you deal.
