Spike Strips Used to Stop Burglary Suspect’s Vehicle

This is a press release from the Eureka Police Department. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

Tai Minh NgoOn 11-2-17 at approximately 5:38 PM, officers of the Eureka Police Department were dispatched to a burglary in progress at a business at the 300 block of 4th street. The Reporting Party (RP) stated that a subject broke the front window of the business with a brick, entered the closed business, and left with a box of items. The RP provided a description of both the suspect and the vehicle the suspect fled in.

As officers responded, an officer observed the suspect vehicle traveling southbound on “D” street. Due to the nature of the incident, the suspect vehicle was followed until additional units could arrive, prior to officers attempting an enforcement stop on the vehicle. A stop was soon attempted on the vehicle at about the 2000 block of Broadway, however the vehicle failed to yield and continued southbound on Broadway at about 30 mph. A pursuit was initiated.

The suspect vehicle continued southbound on Broadway and exited the City of Eureka limits. Officers of the California Highway Patrol, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department and the Fortuna Police Department were requested to assist. As the suspect vehicle reached the Palmer Blvd exit in Fortuna, spike strips were deployed and successfully flattened the two front tires of the suspect vehicle. The suspect vehicle abruptly took the Fortuna Main street exit, where it pulled to the shoulder and stopped. The suspect was soon taken into custody without further incident.

In plain view on the front seat of the suspect vehicle, officers located property belonging to the victim business.

The suspect, identified as Tai Minh Ngo (44 years old), was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of burglary, evading, resisting arrest, and driving on a suspended license. He is being held on $50,000 bail.
