Norman Hawk: ‘A Complex Blend of Bad-Ass and Teddy Bear’

This section includes both obituaries and memories. Honoring our loved ones who have died does not end immediately after their passing. We recognize that… so we’re extending our obituary section to include individuals who may have left a long time ago. If you want to remember someone who is gone, either recently or longer ago, please send a photo and a few sentences to [email protected]. Tell us why you would like to honor the person–is it their birthday, the date of their passing or some other date of significance to you.

Norman Leroy HawkNorman Leroy Hawk, also known to many as “Pops”, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on October 23, 2017 at the age of 69. The last few years were a medical journey that included a liver transplant in July 2016. Norman fought hard and amazed us with his resiliency through it all. He is survived by his wife Diane Hawk, daughter Michelle
Hawk and son Jeremy Hawk.

Norman, a native of New Jersey, was a proud Piercy resident for 40 years. His story was a classic ’70’s backto the-land migration. With little money to make living off the land a reality, family and
friends tore down an old Bay Area farmhouse and hauled it board by board up Highway 101 by the truck load. Living in an Army tent through the summer of 1977, they built their new home where he dug deep roots in the community.

He was an accomplished and determined homesteader, roofer by trade, carpenter, mechanic, farmer, volunteer fireman and jack of all trades. Norman was also a loyal and generous ally to family and friends, and a fierce, abrasive foe to deserving adversaries.

A complex blend of Bad-Ass and Teddy bear, Norm was an early rising, hard working, pistolpacking, chain-sawing, master of getting-it-done, and calling-it-a-day. He was a story-telling, hardcore party animal, thoughtful patriot, an avid angler and dyed-in-the-wool Yankees fan.

He did it his way to the very end and will be greatly missed.

A community gathering to celebrate his life will be held at the Piercy Community Center at 80561 Hwy. 271, on Saturday, November 18th, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. The family will provide food and beverages.

Normy, wish I could recoup all the money I lost to you playing poker at Chris’s. Probably pay off the mortgage! Rest easy and we’ll see you on the other side.

The Hawk, Spiderman, Cowboy, Leroy…classics. A cast of characters never to be seen again. Not in SoHum/Northern Mendo. Not anywhere. Outlaws with a little soul. I can hear a little ZZ Top playing on some shitty Toyota speakers at McCoy. Pass the tequila and tell another tale. Shit’s getting deep.
