(Audio) Local Songwriters Dedicate Song ‘When California Burns’ to People Affected by Fires

Local songwriter Marcia Mendels wrote to us recently to share a song that she recorded for the people whose lives have been affected by the recent fires.

Mendels said:

I started thinking about writing this song during my own experience with the Canoe Fire, and sat down with Chris Manspeaker to write and record it this year.  We dedicate it to everyone who has been touched by fires, especially our neighbors to the south right now, and in gratitude to all of the firefighters, first responders and others who keep fighting to “lay the dragon down,” and keep us safe.  May they all stay safe, as well.  In addition to Chris and me, the players and singers are Richard Barnick, Brigette Marie Couveau, Tina Garsen and Bill Moehnke.  Recorded,  mixed, and co-produced by the ever-so-talented Rob Siefert Gage.

I wanted to send some love from Humboldt, especially since we know how devastating this feels, and as songwriters, this is one way we express our empathy and sympathy.  I’ve already sent cash donations, so this is just something heart to heart.

This song is beautiful and so is your voice.
Should be made and sold locally in stores for proceeds to Santa Rosa minus your cost. I’d buy some. I’m not in the music business so I don’t know if it’s that easy.

Thank you! It is tricky getting s song out into the world these days, so I appreciate your thoughts and am working on it. In the meantime, I’m glad if it touched people and brought a little more attention to fire safety and thanking our firefighters.

This anthem needs to be shared. God bless those putting it all on the line to lay the dragon down. Tears still rolling down my cheeks.

Thank you–that means a lot to us. We feel the same way about all of those who risk their lives to keep us safe.

Beautiful tune and song overall, but if I hadn’t of read the quote above ” We dedicate it to everyone who has been touched by fires, especially our neighbors to the south right now, and in gratitude to all of the firefighters, first responders and others who keep fighting to “lay the dragon down,” and keep us safe.” I would have a different takeaway. Just sayin’.
Will there be an upcoming video with the lyrics displayed?

Thanks for your comments! We planned on a video, but this fire came up so fast that we decided to just get the audio out there to try to raise money for the fire fund started in Santa Rosa for all those who lost homes, businesses, jobs… Redwood Credit Union told us they got donations to the fire fund, so that feels good! Videos to follow when the CD comes out.
