County Offices Will Be Closed on Columbus Day for Training

This is a press release from the County of Humboldt:

Humboldt County Department of Public Works BlurThe County of Humboldt will again use an upcoming holiday as an opportunity to efficiently provide important training to employees on subjects like the Americans with Disabilities Act, ethics, discrimination and sexual harassment and more. For the second year in a row county offices will be closed to the public on Columbus Day, which is Monday, Oct. 9, as staff participates in this training. County offices will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, Oct. 10. Law enforcement and other critical services will not be affected by this closure.

There are several types of trainings that all county employees are required to undergo on a routine basis. However, it can be expensive and overly time-consuming to schedule enough training dates to accommodate more than 2,000 county employees. The All Hands Training Day is an opportunity to get the majority of staff trained on one day, saving both time and public funds. In addition, county offices have historically been closed on Columbus Day, and several other public agencies are closed on this day as well, including the US Post Offices as well as the Humboldt County Superior Court. By coordinating county office closures with this date the impact to members of the public should be minimal.

Below are the mandatory training sessions being planned for the All Hands Training Day, and the locations where they are being held:

Americans with Disabilities Act

Sequoia Conference Center

901 Myrtle Ave, Eureka

Ethics in the Workplace (AB 1234)

Adorni Center

1011 Waterfront Drive, Eureka

Discrimination/Sexual Harassment (AB 1825)

1011 Waterfront Drive, Eureka

Workplace Safety

Wharfinger Building

1 Marina Way, Eureka

Defensive Driving

Humboldt County Courthouse

825 5th Street, Eureka

Elective Training (both classes are being held at the Eureka Main Library):

  • Citizens Response to Active shooter
  • Disaster Preparedness

Finally, local vendors end employee benefit providers will be available at Halvorsen Park during lunchtime to sell food and provide information.

From wikipedia- ” Many Italian-Americans observe Columbus Day as a celebration of their heritage, the first occasion being in New York City on October 12, 1866.[6] The day was first enshrined as a legal holiday in the United States through the lobbying of Angelo Noce, a first generation Italian, in Denver.”

Was Columbus Day the first politically correct holiday? It certainly is the first to fall on hard times. Italian immigrants are so last year’s victims of discrimination. Time to move on.

If it weren’t for adventurers, none of us would know the beauty of the Grand Canyon, Niagra Falls, the Black Mountains, or any glorious eyeful. Not even the indigenous.
When indigenous supremacy, black supremacy, or any supremacy over rides the human supremacy, it’s usually a sign of bigger issues of the human spirit. Evil comes in many disguises.
If only we could ban evil.
