Eureka Rejects Kennedy Field, Continues Searching for Place to Relocate Corporation Yard
Press release from the City of Eureka:
For the past several months the City of Eureka has been reviewing potential alternatives for relocation of the city’s Corporation Yard. This has been spurred by an interest from Costco in expanding their store on 14th Street, and purchasing the city’s current Corp Yard to accommodate the need for additional parking. In addition, the city has long recognized the need to move the Corp Yard out of the tsunami zone, so that we can respond to a widespread emergency should a large scale earthquake result in tsunami damage.
One site that had been under consideration was the area of Kennedy Field located east of the water treatment plant on W. Street, and across from the Sequoia Park Zoo. After further study and concerns from the community, the Kennedy Field site has been removed from consideration. The City will continue to examine alternative sites located outside of the tsunami zone to ensure that in the event of a large Cascadia quake, that the City will be in the best possible position to perform emergency response related activities and to ensure continuity of service for our residents.

Let’s let them this happen. Where does the community suggest this be located?
Huh, what did you try to say?
The truck stop on Broadway, by cigarettes cheaper
The old abandoned Jacoby School would be a great site as it has a big area that is paved with good access and out of the tsanami zone. It is a crumbling boarded up building that is a magnet for transients and trash. The county must spend a lot of money just to keep it from falling in on itself and associated liability insurance
Where is that located?
Next to the soccer field by the Alice Birney school off of Allard st.
That would definitely be an improvement in that spot. It’s an eye sore and sure the neighborhood would welcome it.
Lots of potential locations that don’t have to destroy a recreational area.
Some might cost something but isn’t that better than further trampling of our quality of life?
I don’t consider ball fields to improve anyone’s quality of life. Competitive team sports are harmful. I do consider a larger costco to be an improvement, however.
The old Truck Stop location is in the Tsunami Zone so not a good fit. If Jacobs Site is outside the zone, I would suggest it be considered.
Yes the old Jacobs jr high
