Arson Investigation Into Sleeping Bag Fire in Eureka Inconclusive So Far
Press release from Eureka Police:
On September 23, 2017, at about 1:15 a.m., officers with the Eureka Police Department and Humboldt Bay Fire (HBF) responded to the 400 block of K Street for the report of a sleeping bag on fire on the steps of a business.
While HBF tended to the fire, officers contacted a male on scene who said he woke up to find his sleeping bag on fire. The male was able to get out of the sleeping bag without getting burned and was not injured. The male did not see how the fire started or if there were any suspects.
The surrounding area was canvased for surveillance; however, all identified cameras were either non-functioning or facing opposite directions. It has not been determined if the fire was accidental or intentional.
Senior Detective John Gordon has been assigned to investigate the case further. Anyone with information is asked to call (707) 441-4032.

So much for surveillance cameras. Doesn’t do much good if they don’t work or facing the wrong ways. Who put these up, crooks? That way they can do whatever they want and no pictures. Smart.
Hard to believe the investigation is inconclusive. Either it is or it wasn’t. Was he smoking? did he have any flamables?
It sucks that the best footage is Google Maps…next door to a jail…
Well? If it happens again? We know we have a fire bug. Hard to be proactive on something like this.
