On Saturday, September 23, 2017 at about 8:09 a.m. Humboldt County Sheriff Deputies spoke with a resident in Dinsmore who reported the theft of numerous marijuana plants. The victim noticed a vehicle parked in the area during the time of the theft and was able to record the license plate.

Based on additional investigative leads, deputies responded to a residence on Thelma Avenue in Fortuna where they located the vehicle in question. With the assistance of officers from the Fortuna Police Department and Fish &Wildlife, two subjects were detained on scene. A search of the vehicle revealed numerous freshly cut marijuana plants believed to be that of the victims’. Deputies also located a camouflaged Benelli 12 gauge shotgun, Savage Arms 7mm Rifle, and an AK-47 with a high capacity magazine in the trunk.

Gregory Esskew was arrested for PC 487- Grand Theft, PC 182(a)(1)- Conspiracy to Commit a Crime, PC 12022(a)(1) – Armed while in commission of a Felony, PC 30605- Possession of an Assault Rifle, andPC 32310- Possession of a large capacity magazine.

Kurtis Mann was arrested for PC 487- Grand Theft, PC 182(a)(1)- Conspiracy to Commit a Crime, and PC 12022(a)(1)- Armed while in Commission of a Felony.

Both Esskew and Mann were transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where their bail has been set at $85,000.

I thought PC 32310(c) was under Federal injunction, why are they charging that ?? Granted it’s a relatively minor element here, but still..

This will add fuel to the fire in Fortuna against cannabis. Now they should have laws about rip offs in Fortuna. If you are caught stealing marijuana and you live in Fortuna, you get an eviction notice to move outside of city limits.

Or maybe they knew him and didn’t steal it, most people who park in your driveway know you.. Maybe friendship went sour so one called cops and made false claims?? Cops stopped and found trunk contents and this is where this has ended up.. Who is the Victim and what was there relationship with defendants?? Is any of this important just because two friends had a disagreement. Wish the rest of these commentators would at least post there real names instead of hiding behind a pseudonym and pretending to be self righteous.. Grow up world. If your going to say it post it (Stand Up For It). Be proud of who you are and what you believe. The choices you make (not always perfect) in retrospect, but OWN them as your own even the mistakes..

You would think for a felony the bail would be higher. Maybe if bail was high enough (no pun) crimanals couldnt get out so easy

Whether it is a low or high bail amount I don’t foresee these two skipping town before their respective court dates as it’s likely their parents’ money.

Do you really think these scumbags care about the trouble or suffering they inflict? They’ve already shown they have no sense right from wrong, empathy or respect., and must be removed from society.

Well lets see the pictures shows them as white. Grades say there not morons, friends say there not racist, eyes say they have been high, and the guns don’t actually go out and kill people. People use the guns, cars, bus’s, knives, poisons, and explosives to kill other people.

Going to a rip off with guns to shoot at people who might try and stop them from stealing
Don’t worry. the DA will plea bargain them out on probation.
The DA tried to plea bargain them out on my neighbors case.
Who does the sheriff and DA support ?

Were guns loaded or there by coincidence with no fore thought of the consequence for the combination of the two acts together? Transporting hunting equipment then deciding to grab some weed on the way by. BAD choice yes What your making it out to be NOT quite. Reality check yes big mistake but dangerous these boys aren’t except to themselves for lack of life experience.

These idiots need to be locked up, and not just because they are stupid… These two morons are actually very dangerous!

So to be fair, I didn’t read in any of these reports that they actually used the firearms in the commission of any crimes. Yes guns were in the trunk of the car when they got busted, but did they actually carry them or point them at anybody?

I wAs thinking…..that would be my go too in fire arms when the shit hits the fan! A bolt action high cal sniper rifle for long distance, benelli shotgun for close quarters and a AK with a 75 round drum for mid range fail proof carnage. If these dipsticks left the firearms out of the robbery it would be a slap on the wrist..

These kind of crimes occur every harvest season and have for years. Why not steal it from someone who did all the work. Especially when your too damn lazy to do work of any kind.

I think these two will be pretty popular if they get a prison sentence. Who the hell are their parents anyways! They are little boys with grown man toys and look to be spoiled little privileged young adults. Prison will definitely change them but they deserve to pay for their crimes just like the rest of us. If you are going to do something illegal, you must always keep in mind that you just might now get away with it. And, when you don’t there will be a price to pay. Either at the hand of your intended victim “in this case” who might have killed them. Or, by the law enforcement, judicial and corrections systems when you are fortunate enough to have chosen a victim whom is not willing to cross the line and kill you. If more people who are contemplating the act of committing some kind of a serious crime would just pause for a moment and seriously think about the consequences “this is called a conscience” they might just change their minds. If you parents out there would just instill some basic core values in your children, you wouldn’t have to visit the little bastards in prison. HONOR, COURAGE AND COMMITMENT.

Nice post for a NO knowledge ass. Check some things out before you rant.. See who there parents are bet one of the kids who has a grandmother and aunt and mom that are as good if not better then your parents were to you. Well taught and excellent mannered young man who obviously made a very wrong choice and added extenuating circumstances with the unloaded guns in the same location. The rest of your post is intelligent and is reality. Play you pay.

Off to the pokey boys! Good job HCSO, lock these dangerous thieving armed thugs up and throw away the key!
Time to put the lock down on these types of crimes! Maybe with the legalization of cannabis the sheriff and law enforcement can focus their resources on solving real crime like murders, missing persons, homicides, robberies, & home invasions!
Humboldt and Mendo both need to work to implement sane and just law enforcement which focuses on solving and reducing violent crime, not just asset forfeiture and cashing in on cannabis farmers.

Mornings before daylight I slipped into cornfields and borrowed a watermelon, or a mushmelon, or a punkin, or some new corn, or things of that kind. Pap always said it warn’t no harm to borrow things if you was meaning to pay them back some time; but the widow said it warn’t anything but a soft name for stealing, and no decent body would do it.

Crime isn’t that complicated. People steal because taking something gives them something. If they’re not in it for the money, they’re in it for control. The act of taking, of breaking the rules, makes them feel powerful. They’re in it for the sheer defiance. Some people steal to stay alive, and some steal to feel alive.

I agree with Dave’s thoughts, Big-Time. Maggots who think they can steal or trespass are in for a rude awakening. These two are fortunate little bastards, not lucky, they were not shot and killed. I can imagine if so, their mommies and daddies traveling on 101 to the morgue to go visit their young babies, one last time before the oven cooks them into dust. People are risking their lives breaking into homes and properties for their own gain. This is becoming more common and is very unhealthy for one and all. If you all happen to run into the Esskew or Mann family let them know that they have all now burdened the entire community. Time we all take responsibility, especially within family.

If this is big time then you’ve not lived in Humboldt county very long these two boys made a mistake and they’ll pay but name calling someone you don’t know is rather lack luster at best and not really a sign of great education or individualism. jump on the band wagon its easy to forget you me and everyone has made mistakes most of which we didn’t caught or have to pay for in full. Some have but there not the ones posting hate or vindictiveness here. I was born and raised in Humboldt County.

It is sick that their bond would only be $8,500. That’s probably nearly the same for DUI??????

Do yo have an extra $8500.00 dollars laying around Kitty!!!
DUI sounds like something you probably know about. DUI kill’s more people then unloaded guns ever will.
$85000.00 is the bond and no one who has an honest job and pays there bills has $8500 laying around unless they put there home up for bond. SO $8500 in Humboldt county is = to a million dollars in real value..

Not very old, still young enough to realize this was the big mistake and be able to change there direction in life before it’s to late, if given the chance and not put into a system where they will be with much older career hard cases. We have all made big mistakes looking back but most of us didn’t get caught and realized our errors and adjusted our paths hope they get the chance to do the same.. One of these boys is my nephew and has had a model childhood for today’s Humboldt county in which his family helped him do his homework, loved him, ensure he got good grades and supported him. Ive had my share of off course direction and have paid for those over my life but these boys just plain made a mistake they may have thought was cool or? I don’t pray but I’m praying this is a wake up call and the system doesn’t swallow up a great individual. Some of you reading this may know me and realize I had to leave the county to change my path and for 28 years I’ve been doing well. Here’s to hoping these boys are looked at in there entirety not in just this instance.. Love you all family…
