Live Fire Training on Foster Avenue in Arcata Tomorrow

Press release from Arcata Fire:

arcata fire emblemArcata Fire District will host live fire training in the vacant lot located at 2000 Foster Avenue, Arcata. Weather conditions are looking favorable for the training.

There are multiple agencies participating in the training and they will provide staff and fire apparatus to assist with the burn. Live fire training is important for firefighters to see and feel the dangers when fighting wildland fires. Firefighters will practice firing operations and other important tactics that cannot be simulated or learned in a classroom.

The other benefit of this burn is fuel reduction. The Foster lot has been an area the District has responded to for multiple arson fires over the years. The brush continues to grow which can create risk for nearby residents if it burns as a result of arson or unauthorized burning. Fuel reduction reduces that risk significantly.

The North Coast Air Quality Management District has worked with the District to obtain the proper permits and is in compliance with all burning regulations. The site has been inspected by professional firefighters to ensure the burn can be conducted safely. The last time this site was burned was three years ago and the project was successful.

There will be a significant amount of smoke created and those who live nearby should keep windows and doors closed if they are sensitive to smoke. Firing operations will begin around 9:00 AM and should be complete by 4:00 PM.

The District appreciates the communities’ tolerance when conducting this type of training and thanks the community for their support.

Please feel free to contact Battalion Chief Sean Campbell with questions.
