State Route 96: A Beautiful Road Gets Repaired

State Route 96, the road that winds north from State Route 299 through Hoopa past Weitchpec and eventually east to Hwy 5 reportedly has more Bigfoot sitings than anywhere else in the country. This wild and lovely area is worth the drive before winter rains hit in force. However, there are several areas where construction is underway. Here is some information from Caltrans on State Route 96 ongoing work and possible delays:

Route 96 (Between mile markers 0.0/0.5) – Rumble strip work near the 299 junction will continue. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. weeknights overnight. Motorists should anticipate 5-minute delays.

Route 96 (Between mile markers3.6/8.9) – Roadway excavation from the Willow Creek North Bridge to near the Tish Tang Campground will continue. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.

Route 96 (Between mile markers4.5/7.7) – Drainage work from the Willow Creek North Bridge to near the Tish Tang Campground will continue through Friday, September 15. One-way traffic control will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays.

Route 96 (Between mile markers8.3/8.9) – Construction work west of the Tish Tang Campground will continue. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays.

Route 96 (At mile marker 22.1) – Culvert work south of Weitchpec will continue. One-way traffic control will be in effect at all hours. Motorists should anticipate 30-minute delays.
