[UPDATE 6:38 p.m.] Fleeing Armed Robbers Stopped by Construction Crew on Hwy 36

Breaking news graphicCaution: This is breaking news and details are still coming in and don’t always match exactly.

Law enforcement is speeding with lights and sirens on towards the construction closure on Hwy 36 about mile marker 38 after the crew there stopped armed robbers from fleeing with stolen goods. The suspects, at least five Hispanic males possibly six, have fled on foot and at least one is believed to be armed.

According, to a witness, six Hispanic males were fleeing in a stolen dark gray SUV towing a black trailer filled with marijuana. They were being chased by the victim of the armed robbery when they came to the Hwy 36 closure at the Narrows about 11:55 a.m.

The witness said, “They hauled ass past the line [of traffic]. They about ran the flagger over. [A construction worker] pulled across the road and [the suspects] about hit the vehicle. They went up on the hillside to get past [the worker’s truck.] They put a tire on the bank to get past.”

Then the person tells us that the crew surrounded the suspects with three large earthmoving trucks.

“All three haul trucks have them blocked in,” the witness believes though he hasn’t yet seen that. “The guy chasing them said that they had guns.”

According to Officer Cy May of the California Highway Patrol, “Five male subjects ran from the area. We’ve requested assistance  from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.”

According to scanner traffic, four suspects have been detained. Two suspects have run into the woods.

You can listen to the scanner traffic below.

One of the suspects is believed to have been shot and medical is requested to stage out of the area until it is cleared. The victim of the armed robbery has reportedly left without speaking to law enforcement.

We’ll update as soon as possible.

NOTE: This is breaking news and we are getting differing accounts. We will attempt to resolve the differing number of suspects as soon as possible.

UPDATE 1:16 p.m.: A gunshot victim is mile marker 39. Medical is on scene with him.

UPDATE 1:32 p.m.: “All units, cancelling code 33,” said dispatch over the scanner. That means that immediate danger is now past and normal scanner traffic can resume.

UPDATE 1:37 p.m.: The wounded suspect has been cleared from transport.

UPDATE 1:42 p.m.: Law enforcement has issued a BOLO for a silver Toyota Tacoma with a camper shell headed westbound on Hwy 36. It is involved in the incident, according to scanner traffic. If you have any information, please call the California Highway Patrol at (707) 822-5981.

UPDATE 2:18 p.m.: A photo sent to us by a reader shows the SUV with the trailer that the suspects were driving.

Yippie-yi-yo! It’s the wild wild west out there folks. Oh, and what stupid thieves (oxymoron) try getting away through a controlled-traffic construction zone?

Seriously! The size of the machinery on this job they could just squish them like a bug!
Not to mention tomorrow is the first day of hunting season. Half the folks on the road are well armed and backwoods savvy…

Great point. But “stupid thieves” is not an oxymoron.

Sounds like a drug deal gone wrong! Victim of robbery chasing armed suspects; sounds like he really wanted his “Medical Marijuana” back. Victim flees too! Maybe he has warrants, under the influence, or the one who shot the shooting victim. Maybe he is a felon in possession of a firearm or one of those methed out pot farm watchers staying up for days on end, guarding their “Medicinal Gardens” with assault weapons! I’m sick of the criminality these people bring into the area and how they waste our resources paid for by our tax dollars which they don’t contribute to.

Not much to read here folks same old same old. Just the tip of the iceberg of what’s really already happened and what will be happening. This is just a normal week in humboldt, oh how fast we have changed, this is now the norm. Get use to it. It’s a shock any1 even bothers to steal it at dirt cheap pounds this yr.(in state anyways) Let the robberies proceed. Remember people 30 round clip or 100 round drum gets the job done and your weed back safely to then be transported to Arkansas Or some other weed hating Nazi state. Be safe crew get your scopes dialed in for “deer” season!!

Not much to read? A construction crew stopped them and held them there. Weed robberies might not be news, but this is. Blue collar dealt with it. Cry all you want.

Now these 5 or 6 criminals are aTrump supportvote for deportation. Lived here all my life don’t want to be a feeding round for parolees, Mexican Cartel, Hmong Growers and gang bangers. Don’t want to be known as the Emerald Triangle

it would be great if the HCSO would use our tax dollars challenging the real problem in Humboldt, which is the meth out local rejects that seem to make the paper everyday and to date are my only concern as a law abiding taxpaying citizen in this community. chipping these plants and issuing code violations is insulting all of us. all of this will evolve out of the area anyway. in ten years the County will be broke and all these and the next generations of tweakers will still be the main problem in Humboldt but they will be even more desperate just like the HSCO will be. I see huge problems.

M – Maybe you spend too much time speculating and spinning tales. A thief is a thief. I would chase them too if that were marijuana I had grown. You know much work is involved in farming marijuana? That why thieves want to steal it – they are too lazy to farm.

Helicopters all busy stealing and raiding farmers, they don’t have helicopters to fight crime, only to oppress and terrorize cannabis farmers….. the Helicopters are rarely used in apprehension, just to airlift duffle bags of cash to drop to waiting deputies where the money is divided up among Deputies Captains and Sargeants

The pic tells the whole story: crooks stole about 5 or 6 thousand worth of Marijuana loaded it into a $10k trailer towed behind a $40k SUV then got caught, now they lost the stolen weed, and the $50k trailer and truck…. what were they thinking? Weed is only worth $500-$1000 per pound, it simply isn’t worth stealing anymore, plus you may get shot and caught. Looks like the real losers got away, but they will find them having the trick and trailer and the power of interrogation and snitching….. let ’em snitch each other out! They will all rat on eachother, just squeeeeze! The ripoffs are the real criminals, farmers stand strong, Stand Your Ground, if they come to assault, beat murder and Rob you, stand your ground locked and loaded!

Looks like a Trimmer Supply Wagon…. could these guys have been disgruntled workers? How else would they have known about this cannabis, looks like the suv could hold 6-9 people….. maybe Cartel trimmers?

I was one of the haul trucks that blocked them in…We were protecting our fellow workers and others from getting killed today. The suspects were doing over 50 mph in the construction zone. Had they met my truck at 120,000 loaded on a turn, would have saved the tax payer tons of money. Was a scary situation and handled well by the construction crew. Hats off to my fellow workers. Can’t wait for Monday.

Good work for the construction workers above and beyond their job! Not all Hispanics are criminals there are some lovely families that live here and shouldn’t be bunched in with the criminals.

Did any of u ever think that maybe these Mexicans were working on this grow for some farmer and the boss could have decided to get greedy and use these men until all the hard work was done…..then oops your all fired. How convenient. Now I don’t know this for sure but I’ve seen it happen many of times. Then again I don’t just go off of what I read on the internet because I know all stories have 2 sides and usually it takes two to tango. But I could be wrong. Who knows? Oh wait, not you😂

The construction zone is supposed to open for traffic from noon to 1:00 pm. Not so yesterday. We waited until about 1:30 pm to get through, and passed the rig and trailer and five patrol cars involved. They were interrogating some of the perps on the side of the road, and an ambulance was still there when we got through the construction zone. Quite a lot going on in Eastern Humboldt County yesterday.

Got to hear the story from the guys with the stolen trailer they brought there wives, and family members to these growers house to trim mind you there from san jose or something like that and they trimmed for a long time and these growers told them they was fucked and asked them to leave so they got there women home and came back and asked for payment in money or weed and they said leave again so they hooked up a trailer and hacked down plants one got grazed in the foot wasn’t bad these guys didn’t look like tweeker I think they was done dirty but doesn’t give them reason to almost kill any of us working out there glad no one was hurt

The simplest explanation, Just a Guy, sounds completely believable. Also sounds like a short term prospector. Otherwise, you make arrangements to appease disgruntled workers who know your operation. Production increases and price decreases have altered standards. People having just about anyone up to trim. BAD IDEA… Desperate people do dumb stuff. Both ways.
