[UPDATE 11:04 p.m.] 8.1 Earthquake in Mexico; No Tsunami Threat to the West Coast of California
According to Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group (RCTWG), “An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 occurred this evening at 9:49 pm PDT located off the coast of Chiapas Mexico 77 miles SW of Pijijiapan Mexico.”
The RCTWG also stated, “The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a hazardous tsunami threat message for the Pacific coast from Panama to Mexico. There is no tsunami threat to the West Coast of the United States.”
UPDATE 11:01 p.m.: The quake has now been upgraded to an 8.1 quake.
UPDATE 11:04 p.m.: The Washington Post states, Hazardous waves “were possible within the next three hours for Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras and Ecuador…”
