We’ve All Got Smoke: The Humboldt Haze, the Del Norte Daze, the Mendocino Miasma, or the Trinity Tangle

Garberville Smoke. [ Photo by Lynn Harrington]

Wildfire smoke blankets the hills around Garberville today. But Garberville isn’t the only or even the worst place.

If you have smoke or fire photos, share them with us and please tell us where and when you took the photo.

Yes, the smoke really is bad for us, but we should not forget the people that are in the midst of the fires themselves. Most of us have been there before. We need to help everyone we can as we will be there again. Everyone remember the Canoe Fire? We got lucky.

Canoe Fire – that was the one where the bats crawled under my front door in search of fresh air and died in the mud room. Likely the worst part of that month was finding the tiny dead bats on the floor, in coat pockets…
Woke up in Briceland with dew soggy ash on my car – seemed like weeks – and sometimes it was also black, which brought home how very close it was getting.
The following winter was one of those “bad flu seasons” and I always felt there was a connection.

I was sure I could come up with a better word than “tangle”, but I can’t seem to. Trinity Tapioca? Trinity Topper? Trinity Terror? Trinity Tint? Trinity Tinge? Trinity Thicket? Trinity Throttler? Trinity Teargas? Trinity Turbidity? I like that one… even rhymes!

Trinity’s Terribly Turbid Territories Transcend Toxic Thresholds, Threatening Those Tending Towards Throat Tenderness – Television Talkers Tell Tenants To Take Timely Trifles To Tarry Trouble.

Ok, that sucks. I should be in bed.

Live in Big Bar across the river from Big Bar Ranger station. Smoke not as bad as 2008. Inversion layer sucks.

I think the Bay Area is getting some of the smoke from up north, too. We had an orange sun set over the Santa Cruz Mountains and it’s not all the car and other pollution here. Very unusual.

Can confirm. In Oakland right now, visibility is maybe 5 miles, air quality is awful.

I’d like to go over the notes from the Lewis and Clarke expedition and try to find writings on smoke and fires they may have written for historical context.
