[UPDATE Monday] 14-Year-Old Boy Strikes Vehicle With Bicycle
The boy is conscious and breathing, according to scanner traffic. However, he reportedly has several injuries–including a head laceration and scratches.
UPDATE 5:53 p.m.: Reach medical helicopter has been requested and is expected to land nearby at 6:20 p.m.
UPDATE 7 p.m.: Reach helicopter has left the Cove.
UPDATE 8:57 p.m.: According to Shelter Cove Fire’s Public Information Officer, Cheryl Antony, the boy was riding a bike with no brakes and he was not wearing a helmet. “He kinda ran a stop sign on Dolphin and hit a passing vehicle on Lower Pacific,” she explained. “You could see where his head hit the windshield. It made it shatter in a circular pattern.”
“Thankfully we had our advanced life support,” she said. “We have a paramedic who has the training and the experience needed to make the right decisions.”
UPDATE 9 p.m.: According to a family member, the boy has no internal bleeding but he does have two to three broken ribs and a concussion. The family is awaiting the results of the MRI and cat scans now.
On August 27, 2017 at approximately 1720 hours, a mountain bike being driven by a 14 year old male juvenile was traveling southbound on Dolphin Drive at approximately 10 miles per hour, approaching Lower Pacific Drive. A 1998 Mazda being driven by Patrick Michael Fenton of Whitethorn was traveling westbound on Lower Pacific Drive at approximately 25 miles per hour, approaching Dolphin Drive. For reasons still under investigation, the juvenile fail to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Dolphin Drive and Lower Pacific Drive and continued directly into the path of the approaching Mazda. The Bicycle struck the right front fender of the Mazda and the Juvenile was ejected. As a result of the collision the Juvenile sustained moderate injuries. The juvenile was transported by Reach Air Ambulance to Saint Joseph Hospital.
The California Highway Patrol, Sheltor Cove Fire, City Ambulance and Reach Air Ambulance all responded to the scene. This collision remains under investigation by the Garberville CHP and alcohol/drugs does not appear to be a factor.

Toyota or Pontiac- look and find the evil doer.
It doesn’t say it was a hit and run.
Or maybe a Chump
not a hit and run and apparently the child hit the car. Sad. I also feel for the driver who has to live with this.
Did the driver flee the seen?? ^
No
No we showed up right after it happened and the driver and passenger was trying to help !!
My husband and I were first on the scene besides the driver, the kid that was hit, and the kids friend. It was not a hit and run and the driver was on the phone with 911 immediately.
Thoughts and prayers to the boy and his family. Stay strong!
Prolly smoking the devils cabbage right chump…??Can’t take anything you say seriously…
No one does.
Not ONE word of what the CHUMP spews is worth remembering or even reading to begin with!!!
I sure hope everyone recovers , 14 … has so much life to live yet. I am sure the driver is beating himself up with worry as well, cant imagine having to live with that
And it wasnt the drivers fault. I hear the person was there helping the whole time.
Just left the hospital after hanging with him and his family. He is doing well, considering NO HELMET; cracking jokes and making everyone feel at ease. At his request, he is asking for no homework for the next two weeks.
I’ll pick a nit. The boy sruck the vehicle apparently, except in the first sentence of the article. 🙂 Glad to hear hes doing well.
The first report we heard was that the boy was hit. Later, we learned differently. I didn’t do a good job of fixing the first sentence but, hopefully, I’ve done a better job now.
An elegantly concise correction.
“… WEAR THEIR DAMN HELMETS when they’re on top of anything other than their own two feet!!!!!” This brings to mind some interesting ideas. Ha!
It’s looking like the kid will be all right, or i wouldn’t joke that way on here. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and no lasting effects–other than that helmet advice really taking hold.
That’s good advice. Ha!
Interesting that the parent cares about the helmet but let’s her kid ride a bike without breaks?
Kids will be kids. They reach a certain age and they got the world figured out. How quickly we forget our teenage years and our parents constantly giving advice while we are walking out the door. Sometimes we learn our lessons through trial and error. Fortunately, he has a chance to learn from this lesson.
interesting that you leave a parenting comment when you don’t know the full story.
hopeing for a speedy recovery, bikes with no brakes ,not a good idea
I hope he don’t turn into a crack head after this
[edit] how can you even make a comment like that… I know this kid personally, have trained with him ,one of the most upstanding people I have had the honor of being kicked in the head by. I do hope one day you are in a situation that requires sensitivity. [edit]
You got kicked in the head I hope you don’t turn crack head all so
Heal fast! So glad there was a good outcome from a scary situation! Sounds like the first responders & everyone at the scene did an amazing job! Much love to all involved! ❤️
Maybe this will remind parents to do regular safety checks on their kids bikes.
I slammed into the back of a parked vehicle riding my bike to work early one morning decades ago, it’s surprisingly easy to lose control for just that split second. Sounds like he’s going to be okay, thank goodness.
