Press release from the County of Humboldt:

On August 9 the Coastal Commission awarded a $50,000 grant to Humboldt County to develop collaborative strategies to address sea level rise for some of the county’s most vulnerable areas – King Salmon, Fields Landing, and Fairhaven/Finn Town.

In the Humboldt Bay region, sea level is anticipated to rise faster than anywhere else in California due to the combined effects of land subsidence and sea level rise.  The grant funding will support public meetings to discuss potential effects of sea level rise, and develop policies and regulations in the Humboldt Bay Area Plan to adapt to the challenges associated with sea level rise.

For more information, please contact Lisa Shikany at (707) 268-3780 or [email protected].  You can also learn more by reading the Humboldt Bay Area Plan on the county’s website.

The county employees on this detail will probably eat really well on that 50k. Lunches at the marina no doubt.
Don’t these people already get paid for their jobs? Isn’t this their JOB?

I agree. Let me say this, the sea levels will rise, lower lying areas need to prepare, property values inland will rise. Well, that’s about it. No charge.

You forgot to note that sewage facilities, sewage lines, gas facilities and gas distribution lines and other industrial shista in low lying areas will be disrupted and begin to ooze pollution soon after inundation begins.
It’s good for us to talk, distribute a work load of tasks, but maybe we could do that for $5000 instead of fifty.

I don’t believe it is possible for the sea level to rise faster in any region than another place along the same water mass. Do they mean that low lying land will be the first affected? Amazing scientific extrapolation! If your house is built on fill and begins to sink that does not mean that the sea level is rising. Where can we submit our suggestions? I’d start by elevating structures and reinforcing foundations. Better yet, build your house upon the rock, don’t build upon the sand.

The article says that the problem is due to a combination of sea level rise and land subsidence…. they should have called it “apparent sea level rise” or something similar to make it clear that other factors beside the global sea level rise caused by global warming are in play. That said, apparent sea level changes in a given location are the result of thermal expansion of sea water and ice melt due to global warming, winds and currents, tides, tectonics, sedimentation, decay of organic matter, etc. It is highly variable.

‘Sea level’ is not the same everywhere on Earth. Gravity, tides, spin, and geology all play a part. I urge you to do some research, and learn some basic science about our planet. Or, like 30% of our citizens, you can close your eyes and pretend it will go away. We can prepare, or lose everything. The choice is not hard.

Wow, that’s pretty cool. The important thing will be to reinforce infrastructure so water, power and communications remain reliable as these changes occur….Luckily we live in a county where there is a lot of solar power, and people store a lot of water. The hit will come with super-storms destroying the transportation networks. Last winter was a fraction of the destruction we can expect if climate change kicks in for real…..

Remain reliable? Is that an attempt at humor? 3 days out of 5 in winter you cannot enter or leave Humboldt county on an open, unrestricted 2 lane road. There are power outages EVERY day. Our law enforcement is a terrifying joke, our supervisors inept and duplicitous.
There is nothing reliable in this county except the promise that government & industry will take more and give less to the citizens each year. That you can rely on.

A true test would be to have the entire state head to the nearest beach and everyone start rocking their knees at noon.

If that doesn’t cause the land to break off and fall in the ocean- nothing will.

Somehow I think one serious quake will negate all the prep the government does on higher sea levels alone, if it manages to do anything at all with $50,000. It would be better to earthquake upgrade infrastructure, which would automatically include effect of subsidence anyway.
