Press release from the California Highway Patrol:

On August 2nd, 2017, at approximately 1145 hours, a 2006 Subaru was being driven by a 61 year old male from Colorado Springs, CO. southbound on US-101, just north of Spyrock Road. For reasons still under investigation, the driver allowed the Subaru to run off the west roadway edge down the embankment and collide with a large tree. The Subaru came to rest on it’s left side with it’s right side against a tree. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. During the investigation it was determined the driver had been restrained at the time of the collision.

US-101 was reduced to one lane traffic control for vehicle recovery and scene investigation.

The name of the deceased is being withheld until notification to family members can be made. Alcohol or drug use does not appear to be a factor in the collision.

The California Highway Patrol, Laytonville Volunteer Fire Department and Cal Fire, all responded to the scene. This collision remains under investigation by the Garberville CHP.

I am one of the loved ones. The driver was my Uncle Bill. On behalf of our family, your condolences are appreciated. He was an amazing man who loved Jesus and his family with all his heart.

I came upon this accident soon after it happened. I stopped and tried to help and a lot of other people did too. It improved my failing view of humanity. People rushed in at risk to themselves to try to save the man trapped in the car. A young woman doctor with a British accent started CPR and numerous people helped. Alas, he could not be saved but it was gratifying to see how hard people tried.

I passed by, too. We had just spent several days at some cabins nearby with dear friends and family and had all left separately. My heart sunk as I saw all the emergency vehicles. Once we found out all “our” people were OK, I was relieved, but still deeply saddened because I knew someone else’s loved one was not ok. I am so very sorry. Life is precious and mostly too short. Time to gather in the healing love of your friends and family. Love them like there is no tomorrow, since sometimes there isn’t. Today is all we have, this moment. Appreciate your life like your Bill would want you to. My heart goes out to you.
