Press release from the CHP:

On August 01, 2017, at approximately 0150 hours, a 1995 Nissan coup, driven by a driver whose identity is pending identification, was traveling southbound on US-101, south of Barkdull Road.  The Nissan was also occupied by an unidentified passenger.

For reasons still under investigation, the Nissan ran off the west roadway edge and collided with a steel guardrail and steel culvert pipe.  The Nissan then became air-born, collided with a tree, and overturned onto the west embankment, where it came to rest on its left side.

Following the collision, the Nissan ignited on fire and became fully engulfed.  The driver and passenger sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene.  Both occupants’ identification is unknown at this time and is pending identification through the coroner’s office.

The southbound number two lane of US-101 was closed for scene investigation.

The California Highway Patrol, Redcrest Volunteer Fire, Calfire, Caltrans, and Humboldt County Sheriff Coroner responded to the scene.

This collision remains under investigation by the Garberville CHP.  At this time, it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in this collision.

I had just recently met these two people. And they were always very kind and pleasant people whom just bought there first home together and just purchased the vehicle they were driving. They were very much in love. This is such very sad news
May they now rest in peace
My heart goes out to there family’s and those who knew and loved these two young adults…..

The girl was my daughter and we just DNA results to confirm it was her. We haven’t been able to have her memorial yet. It’s so awful. She had 2 sisters, 2 brothers, her stepdad and me, 6 kids and 3 grandkids. It will never be the same for any of us without her.

I wonder how fast a 23 year old vehicle has to be traveling in order to become airborne. I have seen some amazing feats of dangerous driving, and reckless endangerment of others, but this story stands out as a good example of what not to do.

My sister and her husband were both killed in a burning pickup wreck. He had a history of wrecks and speeding violations.

This can happen to you.

Drive safely, drive politely, drive sober. Slow down, don’t risk the safety of those around you, and those in your vehicle.

That was my sister. She had been estranged from her family in WA for a couple years. We really miss her, her children especially. She leaves behind 6 children, from ages 8-26.

Simply driving at normal HW speed limits and having a veriaty of different unfortunate things could happen to cause this kind of accident, IE a blowout front tire during a corner could. or a bad tierod end on this old car could of snapped under normal driving, speed limit observing, sober driving conditions…
