CHP Offers These Tips for Traveling Safely This Summer
This is a press release from the California Highway Patrol:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The call of the open road may be one of summer’s great attractions. Before drivers head off on a road trip, however, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) would like everyone to remember some crucial advice for a safe trip.
“Prevention and planning may take a little time up front, but can spare you from the consequences of a breakdown later,” CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said. “Getting to your destination and back safely is priority number one.”
- Plan your trip. Know where you are going and where you will stop. Before you leave, research road conditions and construction to anticipate delays. The California Department of Transportation has a mobile app for traffic information, or visit http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ for highway conditions.
- Check your vehicle. Regular maintenance will help keep it road-ready. Tires, belts, hoses, wiper blades, the cooling system, fluid levels, lights, and air conditioning should be in good condition. After California’s unusually wet winter, windshield wipers have seen a lot of wear and tear and may need to be replaced.
- Be sure everyone in your vehicle is using their seat belt. Double-check that young passengers are using the correct child safety seat for their height and weight.
- Use your cell phone only if it is properly mounted and in hands-free mode while driving. A new California law prohibits drivers from holding a cell phone while driving. Program any Global Positioning System devices before you start your trip.
- If you have a vehicle issue, such as a flat tire, drive off of the highway if at all possible. The shoulder of a freeway, no matter how wide, is not a safe place for repair work.
- Never leave a child or pet alone in a car, not even for a minute. California laws address situations in which children or pets are left in heated cars. However, the best approach if you see an unattended child or pet is to call 9-1-1.
Summer driving can be more dangerous than winter for several reasons. More teenagers, who are inexperienced drivers, are more likely to be on the road. Vacationing drivers, unfamiliar with an area, may also drive erratically or unpredictably, either admiring the scenery or trying to find their way. Road construction requires extra caution and may create delays.
The mission of the California Highway Patrol is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security.

They forgot to mention to use turnouts to allow faster traffic to overtake safely!
AND, the speed limit with a trailer: 55MPH!
They didn’t mention that dope growers will be pulling trailers full of soil and many have never towed before or drive automatic transmission in overdrive on grades.
It would be nice if CHP would remind everyone that marijuana growing caused 911 and to spray Garlon on any marijuana plants you see.
Keep focused out there!
Oh Cheese and rice, stop threatening with Garlon!!!!!!!!!!! Criminals are everywhere, NOT just pot growers, POT did NOT cause 9/11, get a grip! Or say something different!
Smoking weed makes you THINK you are ok… Getting high is sorta fun, but it dosen’t get you anywhere. Later, you wake up and realize you wasted your whole life…
Move on. Stop smoking that dope.
I found it very helpful when this website reported there would be motorcycles on their Redwood Run. That allowed me to plan my trip, be especially aware of their presence, and give them a wide berth when I encountered them on the road.
AND, many people who visit the North Coast from out of state drive like they have smoked too much local product.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE – drive first, THEN do your drugs! If you smoke trees for god sake give yourself 12 hours before traveling. Getting up early to drive when it’s cooler is pointless if you wake and bake! If you can’t drive, pull over. If the locals are honking and flashing their lights, get off the road!
Getting stoned is fine – when you’re like 12! Adults don’t smoke that stuff!
Let’s also say DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!!!!!!!! I see more drunk people driving worse than stoners!!!!!! Just because alcohol is legal…it seems to affect drivers more than pot! Do y’all read the booked section? Daily drunk in publics, same names, sometimes twice in one day! And y’all complain of pot smokers, Never see any stoner stumble around like someone drinking!
Nah, just lay around and eat cheetos… Trouble with weed is, they drink beer too, and then whiskey and cocaine during the poker game. Been there, and then drove home.
I hope you have more sense. I have been sober nearly 30 years now.
Don’t even think about driving drunk. It will cost you and you could easily kill someone!
I disagree with one of their suggestions. “Use your cell phone only if it is properly mounted and in hands-free mode while driving.” NO. Do not use your fucking cell phone AT ALL. The problem isn’t that it ties up people’s hands, but that it ties up people’s brains.
As CnD points out, if you’re unfamiliar with an area, or pulling a trailer, or just enjoying the scenery… pull the fuck over and let the cars behind you pass.
Also, don’t drink and drive.
👍👍 you mean drink and then drive right?, so you don’t spill your beer.
