South Fork High School will be represented in the Division 6 North Coast Section post-season tournament this year by both its baseball and softball teams, starting Tuesday, May 23.

The Lady Cubs will be on the road at Geyserville, with a 5 p.m. start time. With just 4 teams in the tournament, South Fork is ranked #3 and Geyserville #2. While the Lady Cubs have not played Geyserville this year, they do have two common opponents. Geyserville swept their double header against Laytonville, winning each game by one run. South Fork split with Laytonville, losing 15-5 and winning 9-4. Geyserville beat Potter Valley 15-5, and South Fork walloped Potter 33-6 and 30-3.

“I think it should be a close match for us,” said head coach Lisa Todd. She is not yet sure which pitcher will start the game. “I usually wait to see who is more on the day before.”

Number 1 ranked California School for the Deaf will be playing #4 ranked Point Arena on the same day. The winners of the two semi-final games will play for the Division 6 championship on Saturday at the home of the higher seed.

South Fork’s baseball team was ranked #2 out of 8 and will host #7 Laytonville at 5 p.m. in Miranda on Tuesday. The Cubs had strong wins over Laytonville this season, sweeping a double header  4-1 and 11-6 back on May fourth.

Ferndale received the top seed despite having an identical Humboldt Del Norte Little Four Conference record of 6-6 to South Fork’s. The Cubs were 12-9 over all and Ferndale was 10-11. South Fork will get home games in the first two rounds, with round 2 being played on Saturday. They will either travel or host in the championship round, depending on whether Ferndale reaches the final, to be played on June 3rd.

Best of luck to both teams……I am just wondering why the write up is on SF only? Aren’t there many teams from the Little 4 and Big 5 playing in NCS playoffs this week??

boomboom, My sportswriter is from SoHum (as am I). I’d love to do more but I have a limited amount of money and no sportswriters from other areas.
