overturned semi icon featureTwo westbound lanes and one eastbound lane One lane of Hwy 299 is blocked following a semi accident about 6:35 this morning approximately 23 miles east of Hwy 101 near Chezem Road. One-way controlled traffic is being enforced.

The big rig overturned while carrying a load of mesh wire fencing. The truck will take some time to clear so allow additional time for any travel through the area.

UPDATE 8:22 a.m.: According to a witness, the accident occurred in a two-lane area. The westbound lane is blocked. One-way traffic control allows traffic to past in the eastbound lane.

UPDATE 9 a.m.: The CHP sent out a press release. It states,

At approximately 6:30 am, Humboldt Area CHP responded to a report of a Big Rig that had overturned on SR-299 near Mile Post Marker 23.  CHP units and Cal-Trans are on scene at this time doing one way traffic control.  The driver did not sustain any injuries from the collision.  SR-299 may be completely closed for a short period of time during the recovery of the Big Rig.  Anyone taking SR-299 please be careful and watch your speed as you approach the area of SR-299 Mile Post Marker 23 near Redwood Creek Bridge.

UPDATE 9:12 a.m.: According to scanner traffic, they will be shutting down 299 shortly to retrieve the truck. It will only be about a half hour or so, according to dispatch.

UPDATE 10 a.m.: At 9:28 a.m., the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page stated that there would be a “hard closure for approximately 1 hour.”

UPDATE 11 a.m.: One-way traffic in place.

UPDATE 11:05 a.m.: CHP says, “SR-299 is open to one way traffic control.  Motorists should only experience a delay of 5-10 minutes.  SR-299 should be fully opened within 2-3 hours.”

UPDATE 11:07 a.m.: A reader, Penny Eckert, sent us this photo of the tow truck removing the semi.Semi with wire fencing

Glad the driver was not hurt in this accident. Not sure if speed was an issue but people drive way too fast on the curves on that road and also 36 where a lot of accidents happen. Slow down people! It is not worth your life or the lives of others 🙁

I for one am very surprised we haven’t had more wrecks here on 36, especially all the Big Rigs I have seen going by like a bat out of… Well anyway!!!

Do you notice many Big Rigs early in the morning? Do they seem to thin out at certain times, or favor one direction over another? I am planning to take a daylight E/B trip on 36 in my Minivan. Any information you can provide me would be appreciated.

It just needed stacks of blue tarps with that fencing, maybe some bags of dirt, and some miticide.

Maybe looters showed up before the picture was taken?
