Former Eureka High School football star, Rey Maualuga, who began playing for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2009 was released by the team today.

ESPN reports,

Maualuga, 30, was entering the last season of his contract and was due $3.6 million in salary and bonuses.

“Rey has been a tough and productive player for us, and a fine teammate, and this is a difficult decision,” Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said in a statement. “It’s one of several we have made to transition to a younger group at linebacker as we continue to shape our 2017 roster.”

Eight years with the same team in the NFL…..that’s one hell of an accomplishment! Good on him.

Great player in his prime, but linebacker beats you up. Hopefully he will get another couple years in.

Considering many players like Rey play up or more than a dozen years, I would say it’s safe to say he’s got a few left. Don’t the 49ers need some good seasoned players? Considering they lost basically anyone worth a shit when the ran Harbough out…..

And they’re thin at linebacker. Good luck to him!

Indeed they are. Unfortunately the 9ers are thin nearly everywhere…. Atleast with players that are worth their pay….

Nope. That’s why they released him.

He’ll get picked up but probably at the veteran minimum which is still something around a million bucks.

My husband says yes. I hope so cause makes me think they got rid of him so they don have to pay him.

I believe Rey has a few good years left in him. The Bengals fall short with the big win in the playoffs. Not a niner fan, but would love to watch him play live closer to home. GO NINERS and sign him.

Consider guys like Ray Lewis and James Harrison, other guys built like Rey and play like him, I would say he’s only about half way done with his career. Having played with Rey and knowing him fairly well back then I would say this will push him one of two ways, retirement or the one I believe, light a fire under his ass and he will show the Bengals how bad of a choice they made!
